The CDC took nearly two years to formally recognize distinctions between masks for mitigating COVID-19 spread, finally saying in January that cloth masks offer "the least" protection and N95 respirators, which meet strict federal standards, "the highest." The agency's slight nod to the largely symbolic value of cloth masks, predominantly worn in school settings, followed months of calls by onetime White House COVID advisers, among others, to promote masks actually designed to stop aerosolized transmission. It also spurred a run on N95s, sending prices skyward.
But a new peer-reviewed, randomized controlled trial (RCT) of N95s versus surgical masks, considered the midrange of protection,

The size of the COVID virus is 0.125 microns. That is a fact. The other fact is that no mask exists through which this virus cannot pass. Masks are essentially useless. Here in Cambridge, MA I see youngster jogging with them on (alone, blocks away from anyone) and people driving in cars, with windows up, ALONE, wearing masks. I suppose if doctors can be bamboozled, so can ordinary citizens...

I belong to a cancer survivor support group. Masks are required. I don't attend the meetings.

This study shows no significant benefit of wearing a N95 mask over the flimsy unfitted masks we are all told to wear, it seems likely therefore that wearing a mask is drop dead useless.
The thing that amazes me is that every petty bureaucrat with variable degrees of belligerency imposed a policy that had not a figment of randomized trial support.
Another total failure by the CDC, the FDA and the medical establishment — and by journalists around the world who failed to ask the simple question “how effective are masks?”

And to the narrow minded argument "but it stops the droplets", the droplets wick through the mask and dry. The next breath propels a cloud of viruses out. Utterly, totally, completely, useless at prevention of spreading virus. In fact, there are studies proving masks are a vector, helping the spread. Unless you wash your hands and change the mask every 15 minutes.

How many millions were spent to prove that an industrial compliant mask used by those who do construction work is more effective at keeping microscopic particulates out of people's airways than repurposed t-shirts and tighty whities?
I have always contended that mask usage by the healthy was not only useless but actually detrimental, especially in young children.

You can contract the virus through your eyes .The govt was never going to get anyone/everyone to wear goggles so ( useless) masks of fear was the way to go.

Who can forget the stupid phrase, "My mask protects you, your mask protects me." Huh? My mask doesn't protect me?

These mandates and/or "recommendations" regarding wearing pandemic related masks will happen again unless laws, rules and/or regulations barring, or restricting the same are amended or enacted by ALL governments that have the authority and jurisdiction to do so. Failure to do so will again certainly result in all individuals in the respective population(s) losing their freedoms, access to goods, services, education, employment, etc. I've seen no evidence that ANY but a handful of governments (federal, state, and local) seem to be the least bit concerned about any of this. I remember far too many hundreds of times when individuals were required to wear a mask where any reasonable person knew it was absurd. Why did we have to suffer these needless and infuriating abuses? It was because (literally) millions of people who had power or authority in these regards MINDLESSLY asserted that the CDC was mandating, recommending or merely "suggesting" wearing a mask was best. They would say, "We are following the CDC."

Masks gave us a lot in 2 years. They gave many a chance to virtue signal their mindless adherence to useless, bureaucratic tyranny; they demonstrated that the wearer did no homework outside of what the media was telling them; they allowed our family, friends and neighbors to unleash their inner fascist; they stunted the emotional and physical development in babies and children, and they left us all with compromised immune systems and our population with nasty cases of RSV.

I hated the mask mandate. Hated it! But, I’ve softened my views of people wearing masks in 2022. We recently returned from a beach vacation where Red Tide airborne toxins were present. Dead fish on the beach. Algae bloom out in the waters.
I learned quickly from the locals what to do when the coughing starts. Get an N95 mask from a local drugstore and wear it. So, I took their advice and got the mask. It helped. Yes, I looked stupid driving my car wearing a mask, but I could breathe easier. An N95 mask helps block mold particles. Live and Learn.
