Restaurants in River North cut their operating hours more during the COVID-19 pandemic than restaurants in any other part of the country, according to a new survey. Some restaurants have stopped serving lunch altogether. Some restaurants are now closed several days a week to remain profitable. On average, River North restaurants in the 60654 ZIP code cut 20.2 hours per week between October 2019 and October 2022, (Snip) Restaurant owners point to a few factors: inflation, a persistent lack of workers, changing consumer habits. But the biggest issue may be workers’ sluggish return to downtown.“River North got hit the hardest because it was so close to the financial district

Of course the Sun-Times avoids another key factor -- crime.

People don't like to go where they perceive that they are likely to be robbed and shot. I took some nephews to see the museums in Chicago many years ago, but wouldn't consider exposing myself, or especially children to the violence that is common now in Chicago. If you can't control crime, people will not go there willingly. And it is clear to everyone that Chicago crime is out of control.

A cannibalistic double-murderer from Florida could end up walking the streets again — without ever going to trial. Former Florida State University fraternity member Austin Harrouff, 25, was deemed not guilty by reason of insanity Monday after randomly hacking John Stevens and his wife Michelle Mischon to death with a machete in 2016. (Snip) The grieving sister said she was baffled by the reluctance of the state attorney’s office to pursue the case further. “I ask myself, why are we here today?” she said. “Why is there no trial? Why is my family being denied justice?”

Hundreds of workers joined protests at Foxconn‘s huge iPhone plant in China, with some men smashing surveillance cameras and windows, footage uploaded on social media showed. The rare scenes of open dissent in China mark an escalation of unrest at the factory in Zhengzhou city that has come to symbolise a dangerous buildup in frustration with the country’s ultra-harsh Covid rules as well as inept handling of the situation by the world’s largest contract manufacturer.(Snip) Under closed-loop operations, staff live and work on site, isolated from the wider world. Former workers have estimated that thousands fled the factory campus. Before the unrest, the Zhengzhou plant employed about 200,000 people.

The Italian Prime Minister has announced a major overhaul of Italy's economy signalling a shift from previous governments on state benefits. Giorgia Meloni's plan includes a phase-out by the end of next year of the so-called “citizens’ wage,” the crowning achievement of the 5-Star Movement, which was in power from 2018-2021. (Snip) it encouraged people to stay on welfare when they could work and was abused by fraudsters. The changes announced on Tuesday would knock eligible workers out of the system after eight months or after they refuse a job offer, and requires recipients to actually live in Italy.

Tech journalist Kara Swisher interviewed legendary British comedian Eric Idle on Monday, where he spoke extensively about the state of comedy in his heyday and said he hated conservatives. (Snip) "I grew up in that world," he said, explaining that he was a "war baby" from World War II, noting that fascism was "very real to us, fascism-what can happen if you let one person take over a country, so that still rings very strongly with me in my soul." He also slammed conservatives in his own country, "I hate them intensely, I’ve always hated conservatives, I’m afraid to say I’m very prejudiced against them, they’re horrible people."

Mannequins used to practice life-saving CPR aren't diverse enough, doctors have claimed. Researchers want to ditch the reliance on default 'lean white male' models. Doing so will help overcome 'bias' among bystanders and help improve the survival of other groups, they say. This, the team claim, would be done by 'changing the perception of sudden cardiac death' — meaning people recognise it doesn't just happen to white men. Academics from Canada and Argentina found fewer than 10 per cent of mannequins used to promote CPR on social media represented black or Asian people. None were of pregnant women and barely any were of fat people, according to the study.

Fans love that Tim Allen is reprising his role as Santa for the Disney+ miniseries, “The Santa Clauses,” but some critics are complaining he’s too much of a “right-wing Santa.” The 69-year-old actor is one of the few openly conservative people in Hollywood. This makes it no surprise that critics zeroed in on a single line in the new “Santa Clauses” series (Snip) In one scene, Allen’s character complains about the state of modern society. “’Saying ‘Merry Christmas to all’ has suddenly become problematic,” he observes. “What was going on in the minds of the writers as they penned this semi-political one-liner?” an article on The A.V. American consumers and virtually all industries could take a hit at the beginning of the holiday season if workers do strike as soon as Dec. 5. Congress could intervene and impose contract terms on railroad workers, which is what Mr. Biden is urging them to do. Thanks to the Railway Labor Act, passed in 1926, Congress can force workers back to their stations with a congressional resolution.

Several top conservatives are warning that if House GOP leader Kevin McCarthy, the Republican nominee for Speaker of the House, does not win the speakership election on the floor of the House on Jan. 3, 2023, a “doomsday scenario” could emerge where Democrats undercut GOP power. In such a scenario, concerns are rising that so-called moderate—or establishment Republicans—are willing to band together to make a deal with the Democrats to elect a moderate Republican as speaker with Democrat votes in exchange for a House rules change that hands the incoming Democrat minority significant power over how subpoenas can be issued.
