The San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) is proposing to use robots to kill suspects in 'rare' circumstances - with the force's 12 bots set to assist officers with deadly force and 'ground support'.
The new policy proposal is to be debated next week by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors Rules Committee and will define how the SFPD is allowed to use its military-style weapons.
One way the machines can cause deadly harm is by attaching a PAN disruptor device - which uses shotgun shells - to the robot. This can then fire bullets at the suspect.
Another method would be strapping explosives to a robot and then using it

As I understand the proposal, these are not really robots, but remote controlled devices. A robot carries out a task on its own, automatically. It would be a very bad idea to arm a robot. But having an armed machine, a kind of ground drone, operated by a human to send into dangerous situations instead of an officer just seems like common sense.

They could have used one of those in Uvalde. At least a remote controlled bullet shooting device isn’ta cowardly gutless piece of crap. .

This sounds like a good idea. I guess we no longer have cops that would be willing to charge an active shooter (I mean, don't get me wrong, I'm a desk type, I wouldn't do it). I'm saying, the Normandy guys and their generation have passed. Maybe we can use technology to shove a little bit of civilized behavior on to certain elements of society.

I can’t wait for the remake of Dirty Harry where the robot stands over the wounded perp and squeaks in a digital voice “What you got to ask yourself is ‘Do I feel lucky’? Well, do ya, punk?”

Donut Operator, a retired policeman turned crime analyst on youtube, just posted a video of police using remote control devices to blow up bad guys, including one who had just killed five Dallas policemen, and couldn't be approached safely, even by SWAT. Sometimes law enforcement has to get creative to get inside the defenses of the most dangerous criminals.

Dementia Jo has expressed dismay over the militarization of police departments, and stopped the transfer of such equipment from our military to local police.
I have to wonder what he would say about this equipment.
As for those who think cops are cowards in dealing with active shooter situations, could it be
that some of those offices are worried about going to jail for doing their jobs?

After an initial success rate, followed by innumerable lawsuits, they'll need a team of 7 lawyer to push a button, rendering it all moot in short order. Didn't they already do this to military armed fighting forces?

Now, if only they can figure out how to send them back in time, to terminate the 'criminal's' mother and avoid all the later trouble.

Maybe the motive for this is more about cops not wanting to deal with Paul Pelosi or his associates in person any more? Just wait 'til the control channels get hacked and somebody takes over a 'robot' of theirs and uses it for a holdup (or worse). The arguments over how many should bear the rainbow logo might get pretty funny, though.
