The biggest lesson of the election: voters
rewarded Republicans in statewide races

Ron DeSantis is getting the lion’s share of national attention for his sweeping victory...adding almost 20 points to his margin of victory in 2018, when he barely won the governorship. Among his pillars of support was his strong opposition to COVID shutdowns of businesses and schools and his opposition to vaccine mandates. But 2 other statewide races on Tuesday featured incumbent candidates who vigorously fought against COVID shutdowns and mandatory vaccines. And in both races the incumbents won victories with even bigger margins than DeSantis. In Kentucky, with 87% of the vote counted, Rand Paul is winning re-election to the Senate with a 22.8% margin)

The biggest lesson (one that I hope we can all learn) is not to believe the echo-chamber claims of a Red Wave. Simply didn't happen.

Voters also rewarded Democrats who acted like dictators with their Covid lockdowns and mandates.

Yeah, it was more like a pink ripple. Glad for those who did win, sad for Kari Lake (still undecided but trending towards Hobbs), and astounded at the Fetterman win. Oz wasn't the greatest candidate, but he at least was a functioning one. Don Henley once sang "We get the government we deserve." I guess the folks in NY and MI will learn that in spades since they seem to want more crime, drag queens in school, and like being locked in their homes. greyseal

If we're honestly interested in figuring out what caused this disaster and hopefully learning from it, we should be considering ALL possibilities--- including the elephant in the room.

Brian Kemp was the first to open his state up from COVID lockdowns, even at the displeasure of DJT. The lesson I take away from this is simple. DJT motivates negative votes more than he motivates positive votes. You can love him all you want but none of that will offset the insane hatred that the left has for him. DJT brings too much baggage.

I'm so disappointed in my fellow Michiganders. Keeping Whitmer!? Passing "anything goes" elections (drop boxes, mail-in ballots, no IDs) and "anything goes" abortions? But, as usual, Southeastern counties won the day.

As vote counts continue to be posted, it is clear that Republican hopes and dreams of a huge wave election have been dashed. (snip) But in one state, Florida, Republicans have triumphed in tsunami-like proportions. With 98% of the vote counted, Marco Rubio has a 16.4% landslide lead over Senate challenger Val Demings, and Governor Ron DeSantis has a 19.4% lead, a gigantic increase over his fraction of one percent squeaker victory 4 years ago. It’s going to take some time to figure out why the rest of the country isn’t behaving like the Sunshine State, but 3 factors suggest themselves.

The polls all say the same thing: Republicans will reclaim the House and Senate. (snip) most alarming, the political operatives know this. John Fetterman obviously hoped that by lowering expectations for last night’s debate with Dr. Oz and by having a closed captioning system with 2 70-inch monitors, he could convince Pennsylvania voters that he was healthy enough to discharge the duties of US Senator. Donald Trump is continuing to treat Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis like a political enemy. On Wednesday, Trump pooh-poohed DeSantis’s huge and historic victory by insisting that his 2020 win in Florida was bigger. “Now that the Election in Florida is over, and everything went quite well, shouldn’t it be said that in 2020, I got 1.1 Million more votes in Florida than Ron D got this year, 5.7 Million to 4.6 Million? Just asking?” Trump won Florida in 2020 by 3.4-point margin, while DeSantis won reelection by a 19.45-point margin. Sorry, Trump, I think DeSantis’s victory is far more impressive. President Joe Biden pledged to build a high-speed railway between Scranton, Pennsylvania, and New York City on Wednesday. The president made his bold (and likely unrealistic) pronouncement during his post-midterm election press conference on Wednesday when recalling how a congressman in the state of Pennsylvania asked if his infrastructure plan would include a high-speed rail between the two cities. “We can. First of all, it will make it a lot easier to take a lot of vehicles off the road, and we have more money in the pot now already out there that we voted for than the entire money that we spend on Amtrak, to begin with,” he said.

The thinking is Mr. Walker’s close ties to Mr. Trump — who prodded him to move back home to Georgia from Texas for the Senate race — will weigh down his run while the Trump announcement also energizes Democratic voters and turns off some Republicans. “If he announces like they say, the second or third week of November, before the December [runoff] election, oh, my God …we’re praying that he does it,”

Democrats' strategy of spending millions to boost pro-Trump candidates in Republican primaries appeared to pay off Tuesday as the party ended the night with a clean sweep of the races in which it chose to meddle. All six of the Republican candidates who seemingly benefited from the meddling in their primary victories fell to their Democratic opponents. Those races include a number of key House and gubernatorial races, as well as the New Hampshire Senate race. Democrats spent more than $40 million boosting those six GOP candidates, all of whom expressed support for former President Donald Trump as a leader of the Republican Party or were backed by him.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell is making a play for another term in leadership next week while control of the upper chamber remains in the balance after the Kentucky lawmaker’s chess game sabotaged chances for a GOP majority. In September, McConnell inaugurated the fall midterms by undermining Republicans in key races when the GOP Senate chief complained of “candidate quality.” “I think there’s probably a greater likelihood the House flips than the Senate,” McConnell said on Fox News just before Labor Day, the unofficial start of the fall campaign season. “Senate races are just different, they’re statewide, candidate quality has a lot to do with the outcome.”

There is trouble on many fronts in Arizona, where officials are having issues counting votes. Yet collecting and counting votes is basically the full description of their job. Republicans are seeing red, as it were, and registering their outrage in interviews and on Twitter. The problem receiving all the focus is in Maricopa County, which is the most populous county in the state. About 20% of the polling sites there reportedly had issues with tabulation machines reading ballots. Believe it or not, the Maricopa County Supervisor’s name is Bill Gates. Gates’ crack team of vote counters estimated that about 7% of the votes in the county were affected – about 17,000 ballots.
