A jury has recommended that Nikolas Cruz be sentenced to life in prison without parole in the massacre of 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, in 2018. The 12-person jury’s verdict was read in a packed courtroom Thursday before visibly distraught family members and the shooter, who remained blank-faced throughout. The jury reached its decision after over a day of deliberations in the trial that kicked off July 18. The trial was to decide whether to sentence him to life in prison or the death penalty. Prosecutors had sought the death penalty, while the defense had asked for life in prison.

Life, Life? Possibly 60-70 years of the costs of room, board and medical care. What an incredible waste of resources. At 40k per year the costs would be over $2.5 million based on a 70-80 life span. The criminals don't need to post bail, but the tax payers suck it up for decades. 17 people slaughtered and this is "justice". What's the "bag limit" before the death penalty kicks in? Insane.

Sickening and disgusting, since this cretin earned his eternal dirt nap since he took the life of victim one. Horrendous commentary on the lack of backbone of the average American juror. They've now become enablers of the next mass murderer at a school near you.

If the cost of wantonly taking many lives is not the life of the murderer, innocent life has been devalued. Mass murderer Cruz might last no longer in prison than homosexual, necrophile, and cannibal Jeffrey Dahmer, who was snuffed out nine centuries before he was due for parole.

At his age, spending 40-60 years in prison will be miserable. Death would spare him several decaded of shower room assaults. Sometimes, life is a worse sentence. I'm of the opinion that death penalty executions should mimic the crime. It should be painful and take a very long time.

As others have pointed out, I imagine that life in prison with no hope of parole is worse than the death penalty, especially for those who hurt children. His only chance for survival is solitary confinement for the rest of his life. Before long, he will be praying for death.

It looks like Stacey Abrams was getting into the Halloween spirit during a recent event with Oprah Winfrey. Abrams, who is running a likely-doomed campaign to oust Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp, had a conversation with the media mogul about her race, which isn’t going so well at the moment. She used the opportunity to try to gin up support by scaring the crap out of the audience. She made some rather questionable comments in an effort to terrify voters into supporting her over Kemp, who is giving her a thorough thrashing in the polls. During the discussion, Abrams implied that Georgia residents will have no healthcare if her opponent wins.

Is President Biden running for reelection? “I have not made that formal decision but it’s my intention . . . to run again and we’ll have time to make that decision,” Biden told MSNBC’s Jonathan Capehart in an “exclusive interview” that must have been premised on an agreement not to ask difficult questions. “Dr. Biden is for it?” Capehart asked. Patrick Reilly observes in his New York Post story — “Earth to Joe” — that Capehart’s follow-up question “was met with a long, awkward silence as Biden appeared to glance toward the floor in the sit-down interview that aired Friday night.” I would say “as Biden appeared to zone out.”

President Joe Biden was asked several times on Thursday about his limited appearances with Democrat candidates, who apparently don't see Biden as a campaign asset. One reporter asked Biden if he has any plans to campaign in Nevada or Georgia in the coming weeks: "Both the congressmen asked me to go out," Biden said. (He apparently was referring to Democrat Senators Raphael Warnock of Georgia and Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada, who find themselves in close races.) "I don’t know if I’m going to be able to get out in Nevada. And in Georgia, they asked me to come down. We’re trying to work it out now," Biden said.

In ten days, the Supreme Court will hear arguments in Students for Fair Admissions (SFFA) v. Harvard. While the case is nominally about racial discrimination against Asian-Americans in Harvard admissions, similar forms of discrimination have long become pervasive beyond college campuses. Across America, schools, governments, and corporations have deployed racial discrimination to exclude “overrepresented minorities” and make “underrepresented minorities” more “represented” (except, apparently, in professional sports or union leadership). These actions take place in a legal gray zone obfuscated by code words and doublespeak. An unambiguous, comprehensive Supreme Court ruling in favor of SFFA is sorely needed.

Oil prices and President Joe Biden’s continued draining of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) have dominated the headlines over the past few weeks, but analysts say a more impactful and serious crisis on the energy front looms: a diesel fuel shortage. Diesel doesn’t get as much of the limelight as oil and gas, but it should because diesel fuel is the industrial lifeblood of the United States, and the price of diesel alone probably has a more significant impact on inflation and the prices you’re paying at the grocery store over any other factor. Without ample amounts of diesel, semi-trucks don’t move, farms are shut down, and critical manufacturing

The pre-pandemic world of 2019 may be gone, but there is no clear indication what will replace it. Russia is no longer a first-rate power. China’s economy has stalled. The US and Western Europe are facing an economic slowdown that may deepen into a recession in the coming months. The great powers are increasingly at odds, not only in Eastern Europe but also in the Western Pacific across the Taiwan Straits. The old ‘rule based, global world order’ is seemingly falling apart. George Friedman optimistically calls it The Storm Before the Calm, and sees a renewed and dominant United States emerging from a period of global upheaval.
