we should respond

Six months into Russia’s invasion of Ukraine the unthinkable has happened: Russia is losing. Vladimir Putin is determined, nevertheless, and increasingly desperate. He has undertaken a partial mobilization, formally annexed four regions of Ukraine and renewed his threat of using nuclear weapons — “I’m not kidding.” Is the threat real? And if so, how should the United States respond?
Russia has a substantial nuclear arsenal, including strategic missiles and bombers and a new autonomous torpedo designed to explode in harbors to create a massive tsunami. These warheads’ explosive powers range in the hundreds of thousands to several million tons of TNT equivalent.

If Putin were to employ a nuclear weapon, Xiden would declare a "climate crisis" and sic John Effin Kerry on them. There, take that!

We should not be in Ukraine at all. Then nukes wouldn't be an issue.

Talks with Russia should be sought right away to ensure nukes are not used by anyone. That is the proper response, not sabre rattling of how the U.S. would respond militarily, or issuing counter threats, or refusing to engage in any dialogue to de-esculate a dangerous situation. Americans do not want a nuclear war with Russia. Apparently, the Biden administration is all hot to have one.

Does anyone really think bumblin stumblin Joe, who no other country really respects, has the capabilities to broker anything but the next stop at an icecream parlor? Putting this into the hands of an inept moron is suicide and congress better come up with a way to keep him in the basement when it comes to brokering anything. Remember what he said at the beginning of this ukraine invasion, he more or less taunted Putin to invade with his tough talking bravado and remember the disaster he left in his wake in afghanistan, and his crawling to the opec countries begging for more oil, and look at the mess he has made in our own country with inflation, immigration and crime. No Joe needs to just eff off, he does not have the mettle it takes to deal with Putin all he is is a tough talking idiot who makes everything he touches worse and we, the American people, are suffering for it.

There is nothing Weasel Clark can recommend that should be acted upon by the US.
Nothing.

I met Wes Clark after 9/11 and he had transitioned into civilian pursuits and found him to be a smart man, an excellent tactician and not a bad guy outside of politics. A democrat but not a communist is he. What he failed to do in this otherwise informative article that lays out the tactical situation expertly, is he failed to address how or why attacking Russia should they launch nukes into Ukraine would be in the U.S. strategic interest. The costs and benefits, as well as risks and rewards haven't been addressed. Without such a case being made, Congress should do all it can to stop Biden from committing us to war for Ukraine. Do not treat Ukraine as a NATO obligation. Let Western Europeans lead the charge in their own hemisphere and we can supply them as we are able. Our degraded military and caricature of a president aren't ready for war.

We have been openly arming Ukraine and probably doing a lot more not openly. As far as I'm concerned this is a blatant act of war against Russia. If I'm fighting with a neighbor and someone keeps giving him more and better things to hit me with, I think I'd be a bit peeved, and the supplier would be my enemy.
Ukraine is hardly blameless, what with all the illegal (here anyway) bio weapons labs paid for by us, the bribes to seemingly every power broker in DC, and their procurement of underage kids for the political pervs. I really dont care what happens to them, and I dont want to be in a war over them.

I believe whoever is in charge of this country wants a nuclear war. They could depopulate and they would get more power to do what they want. It's a win/win as far as their concerned.

This Russia-Ukraine war would never have come about if Trump had remained President.
The democrats cheated to get Biden in the white House and this is the result.
A curiosity though is that while we were all concerned about North Korea and Iran becoming a Nuclear power here we are with Russia threatening us with a Nuclear war.

Putin is NOT stupid. He knows that if he uses a nuke, the west will respond in kind. That's why if Putin plans on using Nukes, he'll use Nukes against the West at the same time he uses them against Ukraine. By the time the West detects Putin using Nukes, they'll be raining down on the West at the same time. No real time to respond, just panic. Russia (and the U.S.) has a first strike option plan and he'll use it way before we do. Whom ever strikes first, wins. Period.

I'm afraid if it comes down to a Russian neutron bomb or low-grade nuke going off somewhere in Ukraine the present Administration will only be capable of 'a strongly worded letter.'

Remember General Clark almost started a war with Russia in the former Yugoslavia when he tried to order British airborne forces to attack Russian military units who were occupying an airfield. That did not happen because a British General told Clark to hold his horses and refused to comply with Clark’s orders. So you have to take Clark’s recommendations with a grain of salt.

With the fraud president Pudding Head we might get a nuclear war. Like the vegetable in Chief said, "no one f's with a Biden". There you have it we shouldn't be arming or funding the Ukraine at all let the neighboring countries deal with Russia but not us engaging in a war with Russia by proxy. Democrats love wars, killing people if not with bullets, then by abortions. FJB

FTA: "But NATO is not a party to the current conflict, though NATO members are helping arm, equip and advise Ukraine."
I'm willing to bet that NATO (the US in particular) already have boots on the ground in Ukraine. Would anyone be surprised? I suggest that saying NATO/US is NOT party to the conflict is untrue.
FTA: "Ideally, this response would include international condemnations, war-crimes charges directly against Putin, more sanctions and, crucially, active US or NATO military intervention directly against Russian forces in Ukraine."
War crime charges are the least of Putin's concerns. If he loses, he wins a state funeral at best. Clark just cannot walk away from the need to directly intervene. One gets the vibe he is aching for the opportunity. And when the US attacks Russian territory and assets, what is the anticipated response? Bells ringing to herald Russian rescue from the dictator? I don't think so. One thing the Russians do historically when the Motherland is threatened is fight back. How far will they escalate to "save" themselves from the now attacking West? Wes, how about it?
