North Korea nuclear threat looms over
Kamala Harris's visit to Asia

The United States, South Korea and Japan are closely monitoring North Korea's Punggye-ri nuclear test site as US Vice President Kamala Harris visits Seoul this week. North Korea has carried out over 30 missile tests in 2022 and US officials are warning that Pyongyang could use Harris's visit as an opportunity to carry out a seventh nuclear test, and the first since 2017. "We have made clear that such a test would result in additional actions by the US to demonstrate our ironclad commitment to the security of the Republic of Korea and to our Japanese allies," an unnamed White House official told reporters during a background conference call last week.

"You see, by being here in South of the country separated by the North of that country by a thing that was agreed upon before I became a viable fetus which was called a Demilitarized Zone, it is the most important thing that I can think of that we shouldn't allow anyone to launch rockets even for testing purposes. Are we done? I'm kind of hungry for Dim Sum and Kim Chee."

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern was blasted for comparing free speech online to "weapons of war" in a recent speech to the U.N. that critics called "authoritarian." At the U.N. General Assembly on Friday, Ardern announced a new initiative "to help improve research and understanding of how a person’s online experiences are curated by automated processes," saying the work, done in partnership with companies and non-profits, will be "important in understanding more about mis- and disinformation online - A challenge that we must as leaders address."

Global economies are in free fall even as inflation runs unchecked. The Western world looks to the president of the United States for leadership; they look in vain. President Biden has not undertaken the two things that might help the economy here at home and others around the world regain their footing: stop the gusher of cash coming from the federal government and help U.S. oil and gas industries ramp up production to bring down energy prices.

In midterm politics, historical analogies

If history is any guide, Democrats do not have a chance — not even a small a chance — of keeping control of the House in the midterm elections. But the question is: Is history any guide? There's been a lot of attention paid to the new ABC News-Washington Post poll, which makes clear that President Joe Biden is a drag on his party as November approaches. Biden's job approval rating in the poll was 39%, even lower than some other surveys at the moment, and just 35% of Democrats said they want Biden to be the party's presidential nominee in 2024. But the big picture is even worse for Democrats.

The Washington Post handed down four "Pinocchios" to Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., for her claim warning of the "end" Social Security and Medicare if Republicans take control of Congress. Murray, who is fighting in a tightening reelection battle against GOP challenger Tiffany Smiley, tweeted on Sunday, "Republicans plan to end Social Security and Medicare if they take back the Senate." Glenn Kessler, the Post's fact-checker, characterized Murray's tweet as a "'Mediscare' attack" to win over senior voters. "Don’t worry, seniors: There is no such plan," Kessler assured elderly readers.

Whether by design or necessity, the decision by House Republican leaders to kick off their Commitment to America in this river town on the edge of Allegheny County was quite apt. There is no easy way to get here from Pittsburgh, or from the airport, or from our nation’s capital. House Minority Whip Steve Scalise of Louisiana laughed, saying the very point of the Commitment to America is to reach the people and places Congress neglects to the point that it needs a GPS to find them and a dictionary to spell them. The Republicans' goal, he said, is to show up and hear the concerns of people in places just

A new book reveals that House Judiciary Chairman Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., was at odds with how House Select Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff, D-Calif., and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's handling of impeachment proceedings against former President Trump, insisting that the methods used by the prominent Democrats were "unconstitutional" and could be used to attack the party. The revelation comes in a book set to be released on October 18 titled, "Unchecked: The Untold Story Behind Congress's Botched Impeachments of Donald Trump," written by Politico Playbook co-author Rachael Bade and Washington Post reporter Karoun Demirjian. The book chronicles the methods Democrats used to target Trump.

Soon after COVID-19 hit the U.S., Democrats made a subtle change to House rules that shut off an important oversight tool for Republicans in the minority by restricting their ability to demand information from the Biden administration through "resolutions of inquiry." Before the pandemic, committees were instructed to take up these resolutions, which often seek all available information from the administration on topical issues of the day, within a few weeks of their introduction. Once COVID arrived, Democrats led by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., allowed committees to ignore resolutions of inquiry, which stripped Republicans of their power to force committee votes on uncomfortable issues that Democrats preferred to avoid.

While discussing Democratic and Republican midterm messaging, NBC's Chuck Todd played an ad by the Arizona Democratic Party focused on Kari Lake that tied together abortion rights and crime. Todd said that he wasn't sure if the ad was really effective or if they were trying too hard to tie the two issues together. Thousands of Russians are trying to flee the country while they still can, fearing they will be called up and sent to fight in Ukraine. The Russian Defense Ministry has claimed that only 300,000 men up to the age of 55 with prior military experience are being mobilized. Russian media outlets have, however, reported cases where older individuals and men without military training have been called up as well. Since my foray into politics, I have come to understand that our system comprises insiders and outsiders and that Donald Trump was the consummate outsider. He was opposed by the system on both sides of the political aisle. Admittedly, I counted myself amongst the opposition. It was only when faced with a choice of yet another Clinton, whom we were told held a 95% chance of victory, that I felt a throw-away vote for Trump was in order. To my surprise, the b@st@rd actually won. He wasn’t supposed to win.

If Democrats could pull off an upset in Utah, it would have profound consequences for the control of the Senate — and the rest of the country. Republican senators are growing concerned by colleague Mitt Romney’s refusal to help fellow Utah Republican Mike Lee decisively win his re-election campaign — a posture that could potentially keep their party from gaining a majority in the November elections. Unlike every other Republican senator, the 2012 failed Republican presidential candidate is declining to express a preference in Republican Lee’s re-election effort against Democrat-endorsed Evan McMullin.

President Biden once again shirked any responsibility for skyrocketing gas prices and instead demanded that gas stations cut prices at the pump for drivers despite their costs to stay in business being dictated by the market. [Video] His flawed economic reasoning is that oil prices are dropping. Oil prices are not the only factor in the price of a gallon of gasoline. Taxation and crushing regulation as well as progressive policies have a lot to do with it. It’s almost as if Biden and the left want to drive gas stations out of business. What if they all were electric? (snip) cars from southern Florida would start running out of juice after 100 – 250 miles. They would then have to spend hours at recharging stations, which would rapidly be clogged with other cars and trucks waiting their turn (snip) Cars waiting to be charged would spill onto the highways (snip) Those cars that ran out of juice on the highway would block traffic.

That’s warning to the oil and gas industry executives. Do not, let me repeat, do not! Do not use this as an excuse to raise gasoline prices or gouge the American people,” Biden said during a briefing on Hurricane Ian preparations. “The price of oil has stayed relatively low.
