Ernest Hemingway's granddaughter has said the family is watching with anguish as Hurricane Ian batters the Florida Keys, praying his beloved mansion is spared.
Mariel Hemingway, 60, said her grandfather was passionate about his homes and the community around them.
On Tuesday, as Key West battened down the hatches - schools and offices were closed, flights canceled and residents warned of a storm surge up to three feet above normal high tides - the actress said she feared for the 180-year-old property, which was home to Hemingway from 1931 to 1939.

Every time a dangerous hurricane threatens Florida, the first thing I always think of is Ernest Hemingway and his cats.

She needs to wear an N-95. Maybe two. Or three. That should keep her safe. Follow the science!

My husband and I toured the Hemingway House last February. It's a beautiful, stately old house a stone's throw from the Gulf of Mexico. The worse of Ian has passed Key West. There are out buildings with cages for the cats, but I don't know how safe those buildings are. The playwright Tennesse Williams had a home there, too. It's now a museum. The poet Robert Frost had a small house on Key West, as well. The locals liked to say, "The only Frost in Key West...."

Like this is the first hurricane to batter Key West. It's not even hitting Key West and I think hurricane Katrina did more damage to Key West than this storm will. It certainly beat the crap out of the upper keys and Homestead.

I am more concerned about the other thousands of residents who will be losing their homes. I just heard it is now a Cat. 5. I lived in and near Port Charlotte for 20 years and have many, many friends I am concerned for. My concern also reaches to the birds and critters who will be suffering from this horrible storm. After Hurricane Charley in 2004 DH and I walked outside and saw two Sandhill Cranes climb out from behind some bushes alongside a neighbor's house, shake themselves off and walk away. But that one only lasted 6 hours, this one is worse.

Hmmm. Didn't Charles Schultz's widow lose all the Peanuts stuff when a forest fire burned down her home?

What do you want Mariel? A Federal National Historic places grant to enclose the family "Saloon and Shotgun Range" in a concrete reinforced housing to protect it from weather?

Unnecessary hysteria. Apparently the max sustained winds at Key West didn't reach actual hurricane force. And it is well past Key West now.
And I had a six toed cat that I got at college in Florida, and she lasted for just over 20 years. Great cat.

Not far from the Hemingway house is the building where Pan American Airways started, too.

Used to have a male ginger/white polydactyl cat. He had a very nice personality and friendly. Someone had dropped him and a few others on the side of the road. All of them got really good homes -- and I kept him.
