General Assembly on Friday, especially on the issues of climate change, nuclear non-proliferation, pandemic response, and opposing wars of aggression such as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Ardern’s authoritarian impulses were on display in her call for tighter regulations on Internet speech, although she insisted she values free speech and merely wishes to cleanse “disinformation” from international discourse. Ron DeSantis is running for president. He has as much as admitted it, although he hasn’t done the obligatory visits to Iowa and New Hampshire. 2024 should be his time and it would be a waste if he didn’t run.
Governor DeSantis doesn’t have to announce yet. The contenders for the nominations are former president Trump or DeSantis. Everybody else is an also-ran. Trump, should he decide to run, can count on residual loyalty. DeSantis can appeal to voters as a younger, more vital, less controversial, and arguably more politically savvy alternative.

The poll of likely voters had Joe Biden back down at 39 percent approval, the generic ballot at Republicans +5 (51 percent to 46 percent). The economy was the number one issue for 84 percent of the people in their decision on who to vote for Congress, with 74 percent saying the state of the economy was poor under Biden. On top of that, the numbers as to who they trust show them favoring the GOP by massive amounts on the most important issues in this race: economy (+17), inflation (+18), and crime (+22).

I have been saying all along that Joe Biden’s job approval numbers are inflated. There is no way that anything like 40 percent of voters observe what has happened over the last two years and say, “Great job, Joe!” I think his approval numbers are buoyed by Democrats who know he is a lousy president, but stick up for their party when a pollster calls.
This ABC News/Washington Post poll supports that hypothesis. It finds that only 35% of Democrats want Biden to be their party’s nominee in 2024. That implies, I think, an overall approval rating of no more than 30 percent, which is one reason why the midterms are going

In the stunning decision, Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Lyle Frank wrote that the city’s vaccine mandate on the Police Benevolent Association was invalid “to the extent it has been used to impose a new condition of employment” on the union. I don’t believe we have covered the story of Cayler Ellingson, the 18-year-old North Dakota boy who was murdered by 41-year-old Shannon Brandt. Why did the murder happen? Brandt says he ran Ellingson down with his car following a “political argument” because he thought Ellingson was part of a “Republican extremist group.”
Where might he have gotten that idea? From the President of the United States. So far no details of whatever conversation Ellingson might have had with the much-older Brandt are known, but apparently it didn’t take much for Brandt to conclude that he was dealing with a “Republican extremist.” Not surprisingly, local authorities say there is no evidence

The township of Lakewood removed all of the trees in the town square last month in response to what town officials described as months of complaints about the growing homeless population at the plaza.

A few weeks ago I recommended to our County Executives to provide funds for a hand count of our upcoming 2022 governor and US Senate races in selected municipalities. I emphasized this would provide proof to those of us that are skeptical of the voting machines.
