Dozens of demonstrators drove together to Seattle City Hall Thursday in honor of Mohamed Kediye, and to call for stronger safety measures for rideshare drivers. Kediye, a father of six, was on his last route Sunday night when he was shot and killed outside the Amazon Spheres on 7th and Lenora Ave. (snip) There are six kids who lost a father. (snip) "We need more protections. We are not even allowed, as drivers, to have stun guns or mace, any of these things to protect us, or we could risk losing our ability to drive and be deactivated," said Davis.

Comments:

Seattle cut funding for the police then again. Even today the city council is actively opposing more law enforcement.

I'm sure Uber and Lyft don't care as long as they get their percentage. There are plenty more where Kediye came from, and Biden has let in another 2 million potential replacements.

Rideshare drivers are often victims and often perpetrators of violent crimes It’s a risky proposition for all concerned but don’t expect the rideshare companies for taking any responsibility.

If you can't carry stun guns or mace, buy a large can of oven cleaner or wasp killer. That should do the trick until the city clowncil outlaws them.

If you elect to rideshare drive in King Co, the onus is on you for your own safety. The mayor/city council is doing everything they can to make it more dangerous for you.

In a huge blow to prosecutors, a Multnomah County judge swiftly ended the trial of Patriot Prayer leader Joey Gibson and one of his compatriots Tuesday, ruling the state failed to provide sufficient evidence that either man had committed the crime of riot during a brawl outside a Portland bar in 2019. Circuit Judge Benjamin Souede acquitted Gibson, 38, and Russell Schultz, 52, after the state rested its case, finding that no reasonable juror could convict the two based on the evidence presented. “I am somewhat bewildered that the state has driven the case to this point,” Souede said.

The Washington state Supreme Court on Thursday ruled that a person’s race, and law enforcement’s long history of discrimination against people of color, should be taken into account when determining the legality of police seizures. The court also clarified state law to say police have seized a person if an objective observer would conclude that the person was not free to leave or refuse a request. But, the court wrote, that “objective observer” must be aware that discrimination and biases “have resulted in disproportionate police contacts, investigative seizures, and uses of force against Black, Indigenous, and other people of color.”

My husband, who was a Marine during the Vietnam War, was always talking about the IQ levels of fellow soldiers, and he would express surprise at the low level of intelligence of some draftees. As was inevitable. I’ll have an article on Ken Burns exploiting the Holocaust to call for open borders and bash Republicans while covering up FDR’s role in the Holocaust later this week, but the sheer awfulness of it can be summed up in this paragraph from the equally antisemitic Guardian which never stops calling for the destruction of the Jewish State or justifying the murder of Jews. It may be Burns’s most didactic film yet as it ends provocatively with images of Dylann Roof, who shot and killed nine African American congregants at a church in South Carolina; white supremacists marching with flaming torches in Charlottesville, Virginia, chanting

In 1990, Ken Burns was the great talent behind The Civil War, an epic nine-episode PBS documentary that he made for PBS. It was comprehensive, gorgeous, heartbreaking, and riveting. His later work wasn’t as good but it was still damned good. But Burns, like so many leftists, is now so riddled with hatred for Republicans that he cheapens his every utterance and destroys his own legacy. The latest example is how he’s used his upcoming documentary, The US and the Holocaust, to bash modern Republicans and cover for WWII-era Democrats.

U.S. doctors should regularly screen all adults under 65 for anxiety, an influential health guidelines group proposed Tuesday. It's the first time the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force has recommended anxiety screening in primary care for adults without symptoms. The proposal is open for public comment until Oct. 17, but the group usually affirms its draft guidance. The recommendations are based on a review that began before the Covid-19 pandemic, evaluating studies showing potential benefits and risks from screening. Given reports of a surge in mental health problems linked with pandemic isolation and stress, the guidance is "very timely," said Lori Pbert, a task force member and co-author.
