We live in an era of stark political division, but there's at least one aspect of politics both sides agree on: a maximum age limit for elected officials. Most feel that after a certain age they should not be permitted to hold office.
There isn't just agreement across political lines, but across demographic groups, like age, too. Young and old, including seniors, favor maximum age limits for elected officials.
And far more Americans believe additional young people in elected office would be a positive for U.S. politics than a negative. (snip) Age 70 is the top answer chosen.

I think a two term limit for any position would work better. Founding Fathers never meant for congress or the senate to be life time jobs. They expected people to do one or two terms then go back to private lives. Sounds good to me.

I agree. Term limits are better, maybe longer (8-10 terms) for the House, but 2 or 3 at most for Senate.
Age limits? Well, from what I could see, Queen Elizabeth II was pretty cognizant. Heck, she was meeting the new Prime Minister of Great Britain a day or two before she died. And we got a bunch of US politicians a heck of a lot younger than me where I question their cognitive ability (or lack thereof).
And then we have Joe Biden. I wish he would get back to the "dementia" stage. He's far past it.

I have called for this many times: Term limits for Congress!!!!!
And I want it way stricter than most people. 2 terms in the House or Senate, or 1 term in each. Then you cannot run for president or VP for 6 years after you leave Congress, nor can you be a lobbyist for 10 years after leaving Congress. No retirement benefits. No special perks. Same insurance and other benefits that they force on the peasants.
This is the only way we are going to get a citizen legislature!!!!!!! And I don't care how old someone is as long as they serve 2 terms in Congress maximum!!!!!

Cognitive or IQ tests would serve better. It would filter out those who should never see the inside of the Capitol. Brandon, Pelosi, Teddy the Swimmer, AOC, Sheets Byrd, Bernie, Maxine, all are unfit.

The problem is that serving in Congress, like the Presidency, was never meant to be a career.

It doesn't matter whether people WANT age or term limits for their federally elected officials. Such will NEVER get through the process of amending the US Constitution - so we should STHU and stop the incessant bellyaching. Face it. The problem is not the fault of the Constitution. It is the problem of stupid voters who are too damn lazy to do THEIR job which is to be informed and personally vet their representatives. WE (all of us) are the real problem.

We need 3 restrictions on our politicians: mandatory retirement ages, term limits, and NO lifetime appointments,

Regarding Reply 6 that we could never get term limits passed:
President Franklin Roosevelt was a 4 term President, dying in office at almost the end of WW2. Even though he led the country through almost all of WW2, two years after his death and the winning of WW2 term limits were enacted for our Presidents, in an age before TV and all the communications that came later. People had had enough of one man rule.
It can be done.

This is like getting rid of flies with a flyswatter instead of removing the dead carcass in the living room.
All we need are fair elections where only the living vote and only once and all are counted without the benefit of algorithms.
I will determine - with my vote - whether someone is too old to work for me. And for how long.

I TOTALLY disagree.
There should be term limits, regardless of age. The Dems have finally realized all of their power brokers are in their seventies, going senile and ineffective. It's not a formula for long term success.

As a retired person of age near that of President Trump, I suspect this point is being raised as a excuse to deny him a future run at office. Although I know that I have probably forgotten by now more than many people have ever learned (I have a BS in Engineering Physics and and an MS in Nuclear Engineering and I have worked in Nuclear Engineering for the government in reactor development and in nuclear safety, in an electric utility company, in engineering for a major oil company, in plastic extrusion, and in automation development for a number of companies). However, I firmly believe I have a much better grasp of the needs of this country than the woke, demented person who signs the horrible laws and executive orders now destroying our country. Age is not an absolute determination of the abilities of a person and as President Reagan once noted in a debate, he did not raise his opponent's youth and inexperience as a reason to disqualify him.

Age should have nothing to do with it other than a minimum.
Just require a cognitive test every 3 months over the age of 68 or so.

Sure, put more young people in office. Especially those in the under 35 group. It might keep them from protesting, burning businesses, and tearing down statues.

We already have many laws or rules in our nation because one person did something wrong one time. Let's not continue such emotional-driven behvior.

After reading the headline, I knew I needed to comment. Commenters 9, 12 and 15 aleady stated the real goal with this "maximum age limit" for the presidency. Just another attempt to stop DJT from another deserved term.

They favor term limits and keep reelecting the same incumbents, often for decades.
They favor age limits and keep reelecting the same incumbents, often long past their expiration dates. Remember Strom Thurmond? This time it's Jerry Nadler.
The founders expected the public to do its duty to elect the best candidate to office. They never anticipated political parties and partisanship trumping national interest. They expected the VOTERS to serve as the choosers, not some law constricting their freedom to choose.

Perhaps if they wish to continue to "serve" beyond age 70, they should be required to take a cognitive test and publish the results.
