If you like free speech, don’t go to Columbia. A leading free speech organization ranked the best and worst college campuses for freedom of speech and New York’s top school, Columbia University, came in dead last. On Wednesday, The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) released its third annual College Free Speech Rankings for the 2022-2023 school year. In partnership with College Pulse, they surveyed nearly 45,000 students from more than 200 colleges—making it the largest ever survey about campus expression. The University of Chicago came first for campus free speech, scoring 77.92 points out of 100. Four public universities rounded out the top five: Kansas State

You can say whatever you like as loudly as you like, provided you speak the latest variant of Marxism. Otherwise you're at liberty to keep your mouth shut and pretend to agree. This is not complicated; this is America.

I'm always amused when I read about FIRE, who for all of its hellfire and brimstone pomposity in protecting "rights," shows with the word "Individual" in its own name that it does not understand the concept of "rights," which by their very nature, inhere only in individuals and not collectives. The logical extension of that concept is the refutation of "a right to health care," meaning by the very nature of "rights," no one can have a "right" to something that must be provided by someone else. QED!

The University of Pennsylvania narrowly missed being last, and Columbia instead gets the title of nationwide worse. I went to Penn 49 years ago. It sucked for conservatives and free speech way back then. But even then Columbia was always worse.

When our daughter was in graduate school at Columbia, before leading us on a campus tour she asked us not to “please, please, please not say anything” that would reveal we are Republicans. Realizing she feared being mortified, we honored her wishes. I suppose it could be worse at Beijing University.

A sign of insecurity, having no argument, ignorance, miseducated, overwhelmed by fear of being challenged, low IQ. So, stick your fingers in your ears and whine so you can't be shaken out of stupor and forced to think. The once great Columbia U. Just an average, mediocre place you pay a lot to go to in order to remain mediocre yourself.

A Tennessee university has been slammed for putting on a campus drag show that mocked Christianity as little kids gave money to performers. Tennessee Tech University's theater team, dubbed Backdoor Playhouse, hosted a Christianity-themed drag show with the star dressed as a Catholic monk before stripping down to a corset and stockings.(Snip)But shortly after Oldham's message, the crew updated their Facebook status. 'Pride isn't a thing we do one month out of the year. It's part of our core principles here at Backdoor Playhouse. It's our culture and our identity. It's us! 'To all our LBGTQ+ friends: We love you! The Miami-Dade School Board in Florida rejected a proposed LGBTQ month for students after a contentious three-hour meeting Wednesday night. The measure would have recognized October as an official period of LGBTQ recognition in the district’s schools and taught older students about two Supreme Court cases related to gay rights. Backers of the proposal argued that the initiative would ease stigmas plaguing the community—with some public speakers likening opposition to Nazi marginalization of specific groups. Opponents asserted that the plan was tantamount to “indoctrination” and would introduce sexualized subject matter to Miami-Dade schools without adequate parental awareness.(Snip)“LGBTQ people suffered a higher rate of suicidal ideation

Homeland Security on Thursday announced it has adopted a new lenient policy on immigrants’ use of welfare, tossing a Trump-era policy that would have been far stricter. Under the new system, known as the “public charge” rule, immigrants will only be penalized for potential welfare use if the government believes they will eventually become “primarily dependent” on government payments. By contrast, living in government housing, using Medicaid for health coverage or accepting food stamps wouldn’t count against an immigrant. Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said the new rule will deliver “fair and humane treatment of legal immigrants.” “Consistent with America’s bedrock values, we will not penalize individuals for choosing to access

The algae bloom, which appeared in late July, has grown to an immense size because of the tons of nutrients from urine and feces of the eight million Bay Area residents that is released into the waters daily—one plant alone dumps 85 million gallons a day that contains 5.5 tons of nitrogen. Joe Manchin cast the deciding vote for the so-called Inflation Reduction Act, and it may end up costing him his political career if a new poll is to be believed. Manchin, who had originally pledged not to sign on to any new spending bill during the country’s current inflationary boom, suddenly switched his position at the end of July. The bill he negotiated, which cost nearly a trillion dollars, was full of wasteful green energy subsidies and payouts to special interests. It also represented a stabbing in the back of Republican senators who had trusted him to keep his word about reconciliation after voting for the CHIPS Act.
