The Ohio Supreme Court just refused to accept jurisdiction over Oberlin College’s appeal (the Court also refused to hear the Gibsons’ appeal seeking to reinstate the full punitive damages award). It was a 4-3 decision, and it means the Gibsons now can collect approximately $36 million.

FANTASTIC!
But, now comes the slow-walking and stone-walling, IOW, the flat-out REFUSAL to fork over the money. When the Xiden Administration gets a court ruling against them they simply IGNORE it. Oberlin will follow their example until Gibson's goes bankrupt.

Did the court issue a mandate forcing Oberlin to pay up? IF NOT Gibsons Bakery will get the stiff arm.
Time for Gibsons to force sale of Oberlin's property, all of it, to pay the damages!

The college went woke and broke. Theirs will be a classic case study of how to turn a mishap into a nightmare.

I hope this bankrupts this looney liberal institution. They thought they were invincible by crying out “racist”. Good riddance to them!

WRITE THE CHECK, Oberlin!

The only place the college could appeal is the SCOTUS.
It’s over.

Please, Gibson family, place a lien on the whole school. Prepare for a sheriff's sale.
What will the Gibson's do with all the property?
Senior housing?

FTA: "Several commenters mention Oberlin College going to federal court. That is a long, long, long shot. The appeal would be from the Ohio Supreme Court to the U.S. Supreme Court. The likelihood the U.S. Supreme Court would agree to hear a case the Ohio Supreme Court refused to hear is not zero, but it’s approaching zero. I would not be shocked if they tried, but they would have to obtain another stay of enforcement of the judgment from the U.S. Supreme Court, another major hurdle that has little likelihood of success."

AMEN #1
I remember a CPA telling me “this is pure BS” when a catholic bishop in the early nineties stated “None of these donations will be used to pay for claims against the church”. We all know how that one went down! History is again repeating itself this time with the “king’s” funding of political policy (thank you “it was because of a music video” Susan Rice).

I'm pretty sure the money is already with some bonding company. Oberlin needed to appropriate the funds and transfer them to this agency in order to proceed with the appeal. At this point, it's not up to Oberlin whether they pay up or not, it's up to this bonding agency. So, I'd assume the Gibson's will get their money soon.

Unfortunately, apparently the school has billions in investments, so this won't hurt them much, and for certain will not teach them any sort of a lesson or make them change any attitudes or policies at all.
I hope the Gibson family benefits from this money. Thinking of the horror stories about folks who win the lottery and manage to wreck their lives with the money for a few years before it is all "just gone". Hope they do better with it.

Took a little detour Saturday when up in northern Ohio to stop in at Gibsons for a t-shirt and a donut. Oberlin is a lovely little college town. Except for the crowd of aging hippies on the corner just down from Gibsons holding their “honk for peace” signs. I’m sure they all got on their bikes and in the EVs and went home patting themselves on the backs about what great global citizens they are. And yet, there’s still Gibsons. Selling donuts and taunting the town’s wokeness. I love it!

It would take four members of the U.S. Supreme Court to grant certiori (review ) of the case.
The three leftist women would certainly vote for review, so it would take one more. Chief Judas John Roberts comes to mind.

Great news for the Gibson's.
Also, a deep bow to Harlowe, who has kept all of us posted on each development in this twisted case. Nicely done, my friend.

They will drag this out as long as they can, and in the end, it will take a court order to seize the money in their bank accounts and pay it out to the bakery family.

#20,et-al~ A sincere and profound “thank you” for such a thoughtful, kind and generous comment. Decades ago, having had parents experience the devastation of big business crushing their livelihood as a small business owner, “David versus Goliath” is seared into the heart and made sensitive to the plight of the Gibson family. Compassion is a driving force: “Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” (Galatians 6:2) Seemingly and prayerfully, the Gibson family will be the victor in this litigation, rather than the victim as were our parents.

Okay Oberlin, time to pay up. No more whining and squealing (although I fully expect it). Congrats to Gibson's and their attorneys for a righteous campaign. Well fought!

This is the end for Oberlin. They have to pay up. There is no avenue into federal court that I can see, unless they want to go to the US Supreme Court. But there is no Constitutional issue, is there?

Also, Oberlin apparently had to post an appeal bond for the full amount of the judgment. That means the Gibsons can cash in on the bond. The only snag would be a request to the US Supreme Court to hear the case and a stay. Both are unlikely to be granted.

Given the recent Dobbs ruling, I don't see the Supremes meddling in what is clearly a state case.

Although this is welcome news, it would not be surprising if Oberlin College appeals to a Federal court as a civil rights claim due to the racial component of the student stealing the bottle of wine from Gibson’s Bakery. A former Soros Fund Management associate, the Director of Global Policy Development, is the current Chair of the Oberlin College Board of Trustees. In an October 2019 e-mail to the Oberlin Community, Chris Canavan wrote: “Left standing, the verdict could…set a troubling precedent for those institutions, like Oberlin, that are committed to respecting free speech.” May the peace of God be with the Gibson family.
