Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) on Thursday announced a program to help U.S. veterans to become teachers in the Sunshine State, explaining that it is fitting to have those “who took an oath and put his or her life on the line to preserve, protect, and defend our flag and the freedom it represents” to teach the next generation. “We begin the new school year. Florida’s leading the way by bringing some of the best, the brightest, and the bravest among us into our classrooms through a new program that helps military veterans become teachers,” DeSantis announced.

How long before the Communist Teachers Union begins wailing about how these war lovers are going to teach the students on how to fire weapons, make roadside bombs and perform deadly attacks on the 'trans teachers' and poc's in the schools? Then the useless media will be screaming the BS 24/7.

We were thrilled at home when my friend's father, a full bird Colonel, came home from Vietnam and was given a job as a teacher in our high school. Beloved in the community as he was, he did not fare well in the classroom. I have seen the same as a teacher educator. There are certainly individuals who can make a positive transition from military to the classroom. It isn't for everyone, though, and shouldn't be seen as a panacea. In our day, it was thought that military men could command respect in the classroom. Didn't work then and most certainly won't work now, especially since students are given every advantage no matter how bad their behavior. You just can't intimidate kids today. They know the system is on their side. Ramona (the Pest)

I applaud him and not just from the perspective of circumventing the teachers' unions, but also because we are facing a dire teacher crisis in America. If we don't start filling these jobs with level-headed, patriotic Americans, the left is going to continue to fill them with subpar, indoctrinated leftists.

The "Hive' that runs education will run the males off quickly. #2 raises some excellent points. This isn't 1960. Discipline is not what it was. Correct a kid and you're likely to be in the principal's office getting a disciplinary memo for traumatizing the kid - schoolyard PTSD. Hope the mother doesn't file a lawsuit.

A friend was a retired Army major and went to become a civics and history teacher in HS. He said that during his mandatory two years of 'teacher training" it was important to be able to parrot back the nonsense that they taught you while compartmentalizing it for later jettisoning prior to entering a classroom. Can't get your teaching certificate without parroting their BS, but you shouldn't ever let any of that garbage get to the classroom, if you are a good teacher. Unfortunately, the majority of teachers fully embrace the horrible stuff put out in teacher training.

I agree with #2. If you want a good read, try Mike Rowe’s Book The Way I Heard It. He writes about his favorite teacher and how he treated the students. That was back in the day. It’s so different these days, but kudos to any willing vet who wants to teach.

When I was in High School (55-59) we had a former Drill Sgt as Principal of the School. He looked tough, crew cut and all, and if anyone had any doubt he was tough, just watch him grab, some Smart A Guy who thought he was cool, buy the collar of his Shirt and slam him into the Lockers! That Principal put the fear of God in most students. He didn't put up with a lot of nonsense when students were changing classes. I think that's exactly what kids now days need. They have no respect for Adults! They are used to no consequences if they didn't like Rules. If they steal something, nothing happens to them! If they talk back to a teacher, or even worse attack one, nothing happens to them! Time to change what happens when they do those things. Teachers should be able to demand respect. So, I'm all for Military Teachers! I hope they can make it work!

Pennsylvania Democrat U.S. Senate nominee John Fetterman’s “blue collar” image is being called into question after reports revealed he lived off of his parents’ money well into his mid-40s. Although Fetterman runs ads that purport him to be a “blue collar tough guy,” his parents reportedly financially supported him while he served as mayor of Braddock, Pennsylvania, for 13 years. Fetterman, who has acknowledged his “cushy” suburban childhood, has openly admitted to the financial contributions his parents gave him as an adult.

Donald Trump’s flirtation with announcing a 2024 White House bid before the midterm elections is sending signals of self-doubt and political vulnerability, with Republican operatives saying the former president is motivating challenges to his supremacy over the party. Trump would begin any presidential primary with overwhelming advantages in popularity, name identification, and resources. But pulling the trigger on a third White House campaign prior to Election Day this November, as Trump concedes is possible, might boomerang. Rather than box out potential 2024 opponents and clear the field, such a move by the former president could reek of fear, inviting more competition for the Republican nomination.

ATLANTA - Republican Herschel Walker’s $6.2 million in fundraising looked impressive when unveiled Wednesday, until Democrat Raphael Warnock rolled out his $17.2 million total a half-hour later. The dueling Senate campaign numbers underlined two truths. Georgia is again going to be one of the most expensive races to run for office in 2022, and Democrats are building a strong fundraising advantage. Like Warnock, Democrat Stacey Abrams heavily outraised incumbent Republican Brian Kemp in the race for governor, collecting almost $50 million compared to the $31 million Kemp has brought in over a longer period. Abrams and Warnock plan to run closely linked campaigns, echoing many of the same themes.

Based on a casual reading of the polls, Donald Trump looks to have smooth sailing to the Republican presidential nomination in 2024 and the chance to erase the stink of losing to Joe Biden that he so covets. But if that’s the case, why does Trump seem so panicky these days? Simple: Trump is in trouble, and — when you dig into the numbers — his grip on the GOP nomination is getting more tenuous. It is Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) who has all the momentum.

One thing we must give Democrats credit for is their unity. Yes, certain members of the party such as Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) will occasionally diverge from the party line and oppose particularly radical pieces of legislation, but when it comes to big moments and key votes – on impeachment, for instance – Democrats circle the wagons. Contrarily, Republicans tend to fracture at the most inopportune moments, which is why it was refreshing to see virtual unanimity amongst the GOP after Monday’s outrageous raid on former President Donald Trump’s residence Mar-a-Lago. Almost all notable Republicans supported Trump after the ordeal; all except for one.

It is helpful to think of political developments as moves on the chessboard made to advance an objective. In chess, the objective is to win the game, chess being zero-sum. Politics is like that, too, though participants often claim it's not, that they're acting for the greater good, principles at the foundation of democracy, motherhood and apple pie and all that — which is true in some cases but never if Democrats are in the game. This brings me to Attorney General Garland's claim that the Mar-a-Lago home invasion wasn't a raid at all.

Medical education, medical research, and standards of competence have been upended by two related hypotheses: that systemic racism is responsible both for racial disparities in the demographics of the medical profession and for racial disparities in health outcomes. Questioning those hypotheses is professionally suicidal. Vast sums of public and private research funding are being redirected from basic science to political projects aimed at dismantling white supremacy. The result will be declining quality of medical care and a curtailment of scientific progress.

The bill would only reduce annual inflation by 0.1 percentage point over the next five years. The study estimated that the small inflation reduction would begin only "once major deficit-reducing provisions of the legislation are fully implemented, but the Act would have no measurable impact on inflation after 2028.
