Brittney Griner case: Russian penal colonies

When WNBA star Brittney Griner was convicted on drug charges Thursday, she was not merely sentenced to nine years in a normal jail or prison. She was given time in a Russian penal colony, which is quite different than a normal correctional facility. Russia's penal colonies are descendants of the notorious Soviet-era gulags where prisoners have been subjected to harsh treatment and poor conditions. Prisoners in the system have been beaten by other inmates, endured torture and forced to watch Russian propaganda for hours every day in what's known as "awareness raising." Following several days of Griner's trial, which stemmed

She could end up in a Siberian labor camp.

Somehow, my 'Give a Darn Meter' is broken today. She broke the laws of a foreign country, and as such, will be punished in that country. Not our problem! All that she had to do was leave her dope at home, problem solved. Guess maybe she will learn some personal responsibility now...

Because she hates the USA, it won't be punishment to watch the Russian propaganda. For Griner, it would be punishment to listen to our national anthem on a continuous loop. Penal colony: leverage for "the trade"?

As Agatha Christie said in CARDS ON THE TABLE, "...stupidity is unforgiveable and punishment always the result." Brittney Griner is learning that for herself. She will now have plenty of time to continue her hatred of America. She is still young so something positive for her may eventually result, but cynicism by Lucieanne posters in understandable.

She is where she will be for a very long time (and quite possibly the rest of her life) because of her arrogance in thinking she was above the law. She is also there as a victim of bad timing with American resistance to Putin in Ukraine. We may be glad that she is being taught a lesson in comparative political systems though I doubt she returns kneeling and kissing US soil and our flag. But we should not rejoice that anyone anywhere is treated so harshly for such an offense because her punishment while legal is unjust and immoral.

If she was a likeable, normal person, an American patriot, I might care a bit more, but I'd still have the basic view that when you smuggle illegal drugs into another country you are just being incredibly stupid, and have put yourself at risk of punishment in their country. YOUR fault. Now, in this case, she's a hateful, obnoxious, tattooed, racist, pervert who spent a great deal of effort publicizing how much she hates the USA....so I have the same view on who caused this, but I don't care at all about her because she is a rotten person.

This is what happens when you have people like Barack Obama, Joe Biden, Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer, sports figures, celebrities, CEO's, the media (the list goes on) bashing America and young people think it is okay. They think they can bash America and do the same in another country. Such disrespect for your own country plays out in how you treat other countries. Where did Brittany think she was going? For that matter, why wasn't the WNBA setting up guidelines for their players? Probably because these organizations think they can bash America, disrespect other countries, and nothing will come of it. After all, these are big organizations with big money and can do whatever they please. Sheesh, what are we thinking - I guess everyone should bow to the WNBA. Not. I bow to God only.

#26 ... According to an article I read, Ms. Greiner was born as a hermaphrodite (both male and female genital parts). At birth, her parents elected to keep her female parts, but obviously, much of her body developed with male attributes (height, strength, depth of voice). That being said, she's responsible for what she did. It looks like she's going to have to pay the price, because our government is botching any "negotiation" with the Russians by doing it publicly and by ticking off the Russian leaders that would have to sign off on any such deal. I sure would not want a friend or family member to have to endure the problems she could see for the next 9-10 years or even the last six months. A Russian prison or labor camp is not a pleasant place to be and if she survives, any sports career is finished. Even if she is released, be it through a prisoner swap or other means, her athletic career is probably signficantly ruined as most female basketball players have to compete in foreign leagues besides the WNBA. That source of income is probably no longer available to her.

Étienne Klein, a celebrated physicist and director at France's Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission, shared the image of the spicy Spanish sausage on Twitter last week, praising the "level of detail" it provided. "Picture of Proxima Centauri, the nearest star to the Sun, located 4.2 light years away from us. It was taken by the James Webb Space Telescope. This level of detail... A new world is unveiled everyday," he told his more than 91,000 followers on Sunday.
