California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Wednesday took out a full-page ad in Variety to urge Hollywood to "walk the walk" on its value and avoid shooting in states waging a "cruel assault on essential rights." "Hollywood: your values, you choice," the ad begins, touting California as the "best place in America to create" and the "home for storytelling and story tellers" for over 100 years. It mentions the "robust tax incentives" and "the best culture" for creators, adding: "Most importantly, we share your values." "Over the past several years, the legislatures of states like Georgia and Oklahoma have waged a

SEATTLE — Amazon is the latest business to close one of its stores over "safety concerns" in downtown Seattle. Amazon is temporarily closing its Amazon Go store at Fourth Avenue and Pike Street for "the safety of our store employees, customers, and third-party vendors." Six other Amazon Go stores throughout Seattle have not been slated to close and will remain open. Employees from the Fourth Avenue and Pike Street location have been offered opportunities at other nearby stores, according to Amazon. An Amazon spokesperson said the company hopes conditions improve in the area to reopen. Multiple other stores in downtown Seattle

All four conservative co-hosts of The Five interrupted the lone liberal at the table in less than three minutes during a discussion about immigration on Friday. Jessica Tarlov fended off a barrage of interruptions during a spirited discussion beginning with Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX) sending busloads of undocumented migrants to Democratic-run cities such as Washington, D.C. and New York. Tarlov noted a plea from New York Mayor Eric Adams, who said the city is willing to accept the migrants, but it needs assistance to do so. “The Biden administration should be providing it,” Tarlov said. “We don’t have enough beds

Carbon offsets generated from forests to counteract future climate-warming emissions from California's big polluters are rapidly being depleted as trees are ravaged by wildfire and disease, new research published on Friday suggests. One of California's key policy tools to combat climate change may be falling far short of its goals, the researchers said - raising questions about similar carbon offset programs around the world. The study, published in the journal Frontiers in Forests and Global Change, was conducted by CarbonPlan, a San Francisco-based non-profit that researches the integrity of programs designed to offset carbon emissions. The group's research has questioned the

Russia's penal colonies are descendants of the notorious Soviet-era gulags where prisoners have been subjected to harsh treatment and poor conditions. Coal prices are soaring and global coal consumption is expected to return to record levels reached almost 10 years ago as the global energy supply crunch continues. While investors in coal stocks are having a field day thanks to high coal prices, curbs on carbon emissions are taking a backseat as markets and governments scramble to stock up on traditional energy supply amid bottlenecks caused by the Ukraine war, analysts say. Worse, slowing investments in new coal-powered energy facilities have tightened the supply of coal even further, Shaw and Partners senior analyst Peter O'Connor told CNBC's "Squawk Box Asia" on

Just as retailers are starting to gear up for the holiday season, there are warnings of a possible nationwide shipping logjam. A shortage of rail workers, not enough rail cars and importers failing to pick up their goods are causing cargo to pile up once again at the Port of Los Angeles — a key link in the U.S. supply chain. Port director Gene Seroka said containers are already piling up and clogging the docks. "There are about 35,000 containers that are designated for rail on our docks right now," he said. "A normal day looks more like 9,000 units."
