For months, Republicans have been telling anybody who would listen that this is the year they will end their power outage in Albany. They cite violent crime and inflation, an apparent lack of enthusiasm for Gov. Hochul and a national fury over the failures of the Biden administration.
Despite those advantages, there’s been little evidence so far that the GOP could free New York from the Dem stranglehold. A Tuesday poll begins to change that.
Hochul leads Republican Lee Zeldin by just 14 points, 53-39, in the Siena College survey.

Ah, Michael. I had the same reaction when I saw the poll showing Hochul has just a 14 point lead over Zeldon. Ms Hochul is an accidental governor and a foolish autocrat, but downstate New York Democrats will not change.
I lived in the Lost Empire State over forty years, including the years Reagan won the state, and I've watched common sense get dashed time after time.
Zeldon's a good candidate and deserves the win hands down. I doubt that's enough.

Then we can hope Monkey Pox claims Chuck U and we replace him with a Republican!

One factor that Mr. Goodwin (whom I like as a writer) hasn’t made reference to is the fact that Dominion “counts” the votes in all NY counties except the “safe” ones for the Demoncrats - Albany, Erie, and the 5 Boroughs. This has to be stopped, period. The people upstate (and I would argue a lot of the citizens stuck in NYC) are livid at the current situation, #NewYorkStateofAnarchy and want these crooks, charlatans and creeps thrown out of NYS for good.

Are there enough normal people left in NYC? I mean, we can forget about what happens upstate, right? The teeming chity elects everyone right?
They installed their moron mayor one election ago. Have they had enough yet?
I hope I see it but I'll believe it when I see it.

Hochul is a woman of low achievement, an accidental Congresscritter who misrepresented herself as the moderate in a 3 way race. She was not, but won one term, and then was cast aside by the voters who saw the truth.
She should have stayed in her original elected position - County Clerk - where she would do minimal harm.

Hochul lead is just 14 points. Come on, Michael. This is NY. While a Zeldin win would be the upset of the century, NY is hopelessly dim. You can't teach an old dog new tricks. But always great to see that there are well-meaning pubbies still there.

I sure as heck would vote for him. New Yorkers are kind of smart, quite unlike Californians, sometimes they say 'enough of this garbage' and vote for Republicans when they can't stand it anymore. It happened when they 'surprise'-elected Rudy Giuliani in New York City in 1993.

I think that bodega owner incident is probably flipping a few votes, besides the crime and garbage.

If a true Red Tsunami sweeps across the nation there's a chance.
Else only the morons are left in NY.

Upstate New York will help Zeldin...is it enough to counter all the money grubbing NY citizen politicians that have paid their way to the offices they hold...case in point the ridiculous mayor now...and the one before him...deblasio grabbed millions before he and his wifey ran away....Upstate New Yorkers need to form their own state and remove themselves from the rotten big apple...

New York is the perfect example of an historically toxic environment. As the poison got worse, those who could afford it simply moved out --- and those forced to stay then fell into two camps, one large and one small.
The smaller group got more afraid and tried to remove themselves from the acid (which is now everywhere) while the other group thrived and grew as they loved the power they got over the smaller group. The acid is their coffee. And some in the smaller group then decided to join the larger group in order to survive.
Now the smaller camp is so small it has become submissive instead of subversive. Obviously the smaller cadre are all Republicans and the larger one is made up of Democrat/Progressives.
The control by the Dems in all of NY state and city is so strangling and suffocating that no Republican can be allowed to grow. There is practically no party to speak of as they are bankrupt and the few brave souls left who try and run for office are as lonely as the survivors on the 5th day at the Alamo.
Thus, it will be a miracle equal to David versus Goliath should Lee Zeldin win.

I hope so, but I think NY is a totally lost cause.

The same was said about Larry Elder's chances in the California recall election. Pffft.

NY is losing people. Those who would have voted for Lee are no longer residents of NY.
