DARWIN, NT — A man returning from Indonesia to Australia was fined thousands of Australian dollars after airport security found several McDonald's food items in the man's luggage after he touched down.
The Australian government said in a statement that the man was singled out by a "biosecurity detector dog" trained to sniff out meat. When security inspected his backpack, they found two egg and beef sausage McMuffins from a Mcdonald's restaurant in Bali and a ham croissant. The man, who was not identified, faces a fine of $2664 (AUS) — equivalent to about $1843.45 USD — for the smuggled sandwiches.

He's got to fight this charge, make them prove it's really meat.

He's supposed to declare any food items. At least there's one country that is serious about border security.

If he was that hungry just think what he could have had for the amount of this fine.

# 1 - supposedly McDonald's meat is something called 'pink slime.' That was a big story a while back. And that's why most of the time their hamburgers make you sick.

I bet that was a witch of a job training the dog to sniff around for meat!

This seems pretty massively overblown. But Australia seems to have a lot of proto-nazis who just LOVE to stomp on people.

On the one hand, they've had a history of invasive species. Rabbits. Cane frogs.
On the other hand, the Australians have gotten a bit fascistic recently.
I'll pass on the trip. Unless I check ALL the rules first.

Australia, the home of the (sorry) Nazis, who track citizens down and put them in prison if they haven't put on a mask, or taken the clot shot, or been near someone who has or may have or probably has had Covid.(who knows, the govt. there just makes up the rules as they go along!!!)
These totalitarians have gotten out of hand and shown their true dictator colors. What a sad commentary on a beautiful country, formerly known as free!

wasn't the food cooked?
what about any food eaten prior to or on the flight? would not any pathogens be expelled into Oz with the next bowel movement? Will passengers and flight crew be required to provide proof of a recent bm before entering Oz?

For #5, I had a client who wanted to expand his slaughterhouse to make use of the trailers full of bovine innards to make pet food. While we were discussing the new building for the processing, I asked where all the cows coming off the transport were coming from. He said they were dry cows from a local dairy. The cows were led across a feces covered concrete driveway, slipping in the mess and trying to get back up to continue their appointment with a .22 cal. hammer and a chainsaw dismemberment. Stupidly, I asked the butcher where all that meat was bound for..."McDonalds" he said.
I once worked the night shift in the county morgue and walked through the cooler of dead cow central. Nothing will give one pause more than to realize how insignificant we become after we cease to aspirate.

Anyone entering Australia is told many times before landing NOT to remove any food items from the plane, period. This is not some new policy, but a long-standing rule. This fellow was "returning" to Australia - likely an Aussie himself. The dogs used seem to exclusively be beagles, who have very sensitive noses and are generally food demons. I very much doubt this fellow simply forgot his McMuffins. (An American woman friend got caught with a banana, immediately fessed up and apologized, and was simply told to toss it in a bin.) You might have noticed that he was also charged with "providing a false and misleading document."

Some posters seem to be unaware that (1) Australia has very large beef and sheep industries, and (2) Indonesia has a huge infestation of hoof and mouth disease.
This American idiot was smuggling in an Indonesian meat product in violation of the Australian quarantine. For all we know, this guy may have been a Chinese-paid saboteur. He certainly acted like one.
