Here’s why we may never know who won
the $1.3B Mega Millions jackpot

There’s a chance the identity of the winner of the $1.337 billion Mega Millions jackpot will never be known — thanks to an Illinois law allowing people who score more than $250,000 to keep their names secret. The winning ticket to the mind-boggling fortune was sold at the Speedy Cafe Speedway gas station in Des Plaines, lottery officials have said. No one has come forward yet to claim the massive prize — with lotto officials saying it’s not even clear whether the winner was an individual or pool. Illinois is one of a few states that allow lotto winners the option of anonymity. Some other states offer some form of lotto anonymity,

Comments:

These days, with crime so rampant and the thugs getting off lightly, it is better to remain anonymous when it involves large amounts of lottery winnings. It also keeps long lost "friends" and family members from knocking on your door looking for a handout.

I'm amazed Illinois has a law on the books that makes sense. I hope who ever won that prize has enough intelligence to move the hell out of Illinois and doesn't reveal his identity by doing something stupid. Security through obscurity.

Something like 77 percent of lottery winners declare bankruptcy after winning. A lot of it is bad decisions - giving money to everyone who comes out of the woodwork, buying lavish gifts - but they also become targets of con artists and scammers if their identity becomes known. A common tactic is bogus lawsuits, such as faking a car accident. It's only commonsense not to reveal the winners.

odd law in that the Lotto ticket itself states/requires that winners "agree to be used for promotional purposes/appearances" by the Lotto company.

Many years ago, I remember reading an article in a Delta airlines magazine (remember, when the airlines had a magazine in the seat pocket) and they had a business columnist. That month, his topic was "What to do if you won the big lottery." I think it's still wise advise. 1. Stay quiet. Protect the ticket and build a team of financial planners and lawyers to manage the windfall. You want the money to last longer than you (and your close family) do. 2. Avoid publicity. If you can claim the prize anonyomously, do so. If you do have to be identified, keep a low profile. If the newspaper stops by for an interview, show that you're a boring person. Talk about your stamp collection or something like that. 3. Don't start a business. Lottery business ventures rarely work out. Face it -- you got your millions (or billion) and you're not going to be driven as hard as other entrepreneurs who are fighting for every buck. Nor will your employees have that same drive. 4. Don't listen to pitches for businesses, loans, etc. If somebody has a "deal" for you, tell them that your advisors have instructed you to get any proposals in writing for their review. and you can even open a PO box for these. Nobody says you have to actually read them. Nor do you have to go get the mail. 5. Quit your job. Your co-workers are going to be jealous of any raises, promotions that you get "He doesn't need that." You don't need that stress either. I think he said that you might work for awhile until you get things settled (again see #1), but feel free to use vacation and other paid time off as needed. 6. Live on a budget. Yeah, you can do some expensive things but remember you want the money to last as long as you do. A lot of toys have expensive carrying costs (boats, planes, expensive cars, houses) and keep that in mind. Be charitable where you want to be charitable and help those you want to help, but don't feel required to do anything of the sort. Heck, go ahead and light a cigar with a $100 bill once in awhile. Enjoy life. I haven't had an opportunity to test this theory. But it sounds pretty good. Now, I need to call the Des Plaines cops. Evidentally, somebody up there stole my winning ticket.

Buying a lotto ticket only slightly improves your odds above zero. You have a better chance of getting struck by lightning. I know someone has to win, but like #8, it won't be me.

I once watched a homeless person rummage thru a trash bin looking for bottles and cans to redeem the 5 cent deposit. When they had a bag full they then went into the gas station/convenience store for their deposit money and then promptly bought lottery tickets. Living the dream,

Living during the national freefall precipitated by Biden's tyrannical policies, it’s beneficial to ponder how both the United States, and world, might be different if Donald J. Trump had taken the oath of office as president on January, 20, 2021, instead of Joseph Rube-inette Biden. Energy There would be no Green Agenda executive orders. No cancellation of the Keystone XL pipeline, where thousands of workers with high-paying jobs would ensure the flow of 700,000 barrels a day to the American market. There would be no freeze on new oil and gas leases. The ANWR project in Alaska, would have progressed instead of stalled.

I was blessed. When I went searching for a dog for my then-six-year-old daughter and myself, a friend referred me to a local rescue organization that specialized in golden retrievers. I knew a golden would be a good fit for us — I’d helped my grandmother rescue a golden when I was a kid and been around enough of them to know that temperament-wise, one would be a good fit for us. I checked the rescue organization’s website and happened upon a likely candidate — he looked a bit scruffy and, per the description, had been surrendered by a breeder

Sandoval, born in 1922 in Nageezi, New Mexico, passed away late Friday at a hospital in Shiprock, the Associated Press (AP) reported. The hundreds of Navajo Code Talkers of the U.S. Marine Corps were instrumental in winning the Pacific Theater, as they were used in major Marine assaults against the Japanese in World War II. The Code Talkers would communicate messages using the unwritten Navajo language on enemy military movement, confusing the Japanese attempting to crack their code. Open borders activists are balking at red states taking immigration enforcement into their own hands by busing border crossers and illegal aliens to blue states and cities like New York and Washington, DC. In April, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) announced that state officials would begin chartering buses to transport border crossers and illegal aliens to Washington, DC, and other cities. As a result, Washington, DC, Mayor Muriel Bowser is asking President Joe Biden to deploy the National Guard after she said about 4,000 border crossers and illegal aliens have arrived in the region over the last few weeks. Illegal immigration to D.C., Bowser said, is at a “tipping point.”

An elderly convenience store owner in California is being hailed as a hero after he shot at a would-be robber who ran out of the store screaming his arm was “shot off.” Shocking surveillance footage from Norco Market & Liquor at the 2800 block of Clark Avenue in Norco, Calif., showed a masked assailant entering the business at about 2:47 a.m. with an AR-15-style rifle pointed at the 80-year-old store owner. The suspect yelled, “Freeze, hands in the air,” but within seconds, the quick-thinking store owner pulled out his own rifle from under the counter and immediately shot once at the robber, hitting him in the arm.

Why have Democrats taken to calling everything what it’s not? The word games from “woman” to “recession” are bad enough, but Sens. Joe Manchin and Chuck Schumer now offer an “Inflation Reduction Act” that doesn’t actually reduce inflation. Oh, if it works out as they claim, the Penn-Wharton Budget Model indicates it might do a little inflation-reducing in a decade, but would actually goose it a bit first. The White House’s favorite experts, Moody Analytics, read the bill as lowering the Consumer Price Index by a third of a percentage point — by 2031. That really shouldn’t surprise, since this wasn’t remotely written to combat inflation.

NEW ORLEANS — A former Louisiana Democratic Party leader who resigned from the state Senate earlier this year, citing depression and a gambling addiction, pleaded guilty Monday to a federal wire fraud charge. Former Sen. Karen Carter Peterson entered the plea before U.S. District Judge Sarah Vance, court records show. Documents filed Monday outlined a scheme in which she diverted more than $94,000 in campaign funds for personal use, including for casino gambling. Prosecutors said she also arranged for another $53,000 in state Democratic Party funds to be kicked back to her by associates she arranged to be hired by the party, who remained unidentified as of Monday.

We’ve been keeping an eye on Rep. Liz Cheney’s primary race in Wyoming, and it hasn’t been looking good for her for some time now. As we reported, she’s been trailing her Trump-endorsed primary opponent Harriet Hageman, at different points, by up to 30 points. Another poll in June found that 73 percent of Republicans in Wyoming viewed her unfavorably. On top of ignoring Republicans, she’s even begging Democrats to cross over and vote for her. That’s not going over well with Republicans. But Cheney has some kind of delusional belief that not only will she win but that she might even have a chance at the presidential run in 2024.
