Although inflation — which surged to 9.1% in June — is driving up the cost of everyday goods, consumers are feeling a significant amount of pain when it comes to buying food.
According to the Consumer Price Index (CPI) – which is a broad measure of the price for everyday goods – food prices have outpaced overall inflation, rising 10.4% in June compared to a year ago. This takes into account food at home and at restaurants.
Inflation for food-at-home, which accounts for grocery store and supermarket food purchases, rose even higher to 12.2%, underscoring how consumers are not getting much reprieve by trying to cook at home.

Heading out to hoe my garden now. Getting tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, squash, etc. now and coming on strong. Will be putting up lots for the winter. Sharing with neighbors too. Let's not let them bleed us dry and do as much as we can ourselves.

I went to a local deli last night and had a pastrami ruben sandwich with potato salad as my side. $22.00. Plus $4.50 for lemonade. Add in a tip and it was $30 out the door.

I haven't been in a McDonald's in three years, but my wife wanted to 'eat cheap,' so I stopped to grab what used to be our 'usual stuff.' I never looked up at the prices until the girl at the register told me "That'll be $23.79." I asked her to repeat the order back to me to see if I had had a stroke and ordered something like 15 burgers or something stupid.
Nope... my order was right, but what use to cost me $12.59 had doubled. So much for 'eating cheap.' I won't be stopping there again. EVER AGAIN!

It's not just food inflation. The wages they are having to pay are unnbelievable; for minimum wage fast food jobs. And yet every establishment is short of help. In my small town one day the pizza joint had two eight year-olds bussing tables (staff kids I guess). Is everyone getting checks in the mail not to work? Nothing makes any sense.

Not too long ago a brick of cheddar cheese was $4.99. Now it is $10.99. A medium size watermelon was 16 bucks. We stopped at Dairy Queen for a happy meal. 7 bucks. Sandwich had been reheated in a microwave. The meat did not taste like meat

We used to go to a small independent Chicago style Italian Beef and hot dog restaurant. It was our wedding anniversary so we decided to relive old times. They only have 4 tables but the absolute best food. The guys still greeted us when we came in and asked if we wanted our "usual." We did so we got one Beef sandwich, one homemade Italian sausage sandwich, a medium fry to share and a medium Ice Tea and a medium Diet Coke. It was $40.00!!
Thank goodness the food was better than ever but it will be a while before we go back.
BTW...I'm just making my grocery list. My husband likes to take beef jerky with him to work when he can't stop for lunch. Jack Link's Original Beef Jerky is $19.99 for 16 ounces.

I’m seeing 50-100% increases on some items at Walmart grocery. I refuse to pay it. I am down to just a few staples. I see (apparent) food stamp users with overflowing carts. What’s it to them? They got a 25% increase this year because Biden knew things were going much higher even though they said it wouldn’t happen. So why the 25% foodstamp increase, Joe?

At least we can thank Putin, or the greedy oil company executives or the greedy station owners for the ever so slight drop in gas prices, because we've all been told, Bidet has nothing to do with the price of gas when it rises!

Because everything is trucked in, everything has gone up. The high cost of fuel is seen in the cost of all that we need and use in daily life. The Dollar Stores are now $1.25 stores.

I grocery shopped at Walmart this morning after not being there for 2 weeks. My mind is still reeling. They never have the large Coffeemates but I saw in another local store had gone to over $10 for the large one. A package of copier paper was $5.87, had been $3.59 the last time I bought it. My biggest complaint is that one of my retirement checks this month was down 20%. If it does that every month for 5 months, I'm wiped out on that account. It is a scary time. PS I can hardly find Caffeine Free Diet Coke. Also, when you eat out I used to always figure with tip low $20's. Now with tip it is probably $30. For one.

Those are across-the-board average increases. When you see something that has gone up 50% it really gets your attention. I hope you have good Christian neighbors, #1. They may be back when they run out completely.

I have cut back on groceries. My town has a historic downtown area with some nice diners and food places. I used to enjoy eating lunch there, but now i just wait until I get home and put something together there. The owner of one the cafes that has been a landmark and in business for 60 years has sold the building and is closing at the end of the month. He always has signs advertising for help. I guess with the help shortage and higher cost of food it is time to throw in the towel. Several other small businesses that are not food related have also shut down in the last year.

Comparing last year's total grocery outlay to this year's, I calculate an increase of 16% overall. That's just for food that was bought and brought home.
