Everywhere I go these days, the question I seem to hear most often is, "What’s wrong today? Why the violence, the shootings, the divisions, the vitriol in our nation, our cities, our society?" I’m hardly the only one getting such questions: other spiritual leaders, teachers, politicians, parents and pundits tell me that they ask and get asked the same all the time.
I listen intently to the answers given to that plea by so many respected voices in the country. Most will rattle off the usual suspects: it’s the lousy economy, some opine; it’s all the political strife that drives us apart, others might suggest.

There is truth in what Dolan states, but also a hidden lie.
It is true that even the concept of God is somewhat sufficient to maintain a sense of accountability for one's life. We had this for most of our nation's history - a kind of secular nod to 'a God' whose non-specific and non-personal presence served as a deterrent.
But the words of Jesus cut much deeper than mere acquiescence to an idea of God. Jesus states, in no uncertain terms "I am the Way, the Truth, the Life and no one comes to the Father except through Me". That is either true or false. If it is true, then Christ is the singular savior for those who look to Him for their forgiveness. If it is false, then we are once again left in a sea of competing ideas that crawl over each other in contradictions and logical fallacies.
Dolan likely believes this but might be reticent to express what is truly a divisive tenet of the Christian faith.

The spiritual hole in our hearts has to be filled with something. Today, so many people don't even know they have a spiritual hole, consequently they try everything the world has to offer, but to no avail. We must have something, or someone, bigger than ourselves to maintain any kind of sanity in an insane world. Satan is the author of confusion and he is having a field day with all the sin in the world. Nothing, absolutely nothing, fills that hole like Jesus.

In addition to being a less secular society, there is a balkanization of America, pitting races against each other, pitting classes against each other, pitting legal citizens against illegal residents, all for the benefit of a Bigger more Totalitarian Federal Government. Unfortunately, the American press is no longer the Fourth Estate but a political arm of the Deep State and the Totalitarians. The American Press is no longer the gatekeeper of the truth, but the gatekeeper of the disinformation. In short America is F#$@ed.

The Cardinal is correct. it is all about people making everything about themselves. They make themselves God. They believe they are entitled. They have no concept of right and wrong.

We have long lost the social cohesion of a society that believes in an omnipotent God. I would be afraid to guess the percentage of people that even know they have an eternal soul and its importance. What percentage of our modern twenty and thirty-somethings are contemplating the Being that created them? I'd bet they do not even know Jesus became one of us and simply said, "Follow Me."
We will never win the political battle until we engage in spiritual warfare. Satan's forces have been using the Marxists, communists, socialists, progressives, and leftists of every flavor for 150 years. They were sly and sneaky, pretending to "be like everyone else", but they were termites eating away at the foundation. We are all familiar with their long march through the institutions, many of us have lived it, and here we are at the climax of the story. The battle between good and evil. We are to put on the Armor of God. Our greatest weapons are fasting and prayer; reading and meditation on Holy Scripture. For Catholics add in the Rosary and the Divine Mercy Chaplet; Daily Mass whenever possible and Holy Hour Eucharistic Adoration.
St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle...

Your Eminence, I have a hypothetical for you.
There exists a head of State who claims to be a devout member of your Faith. Yet the man is steeped in continuing mortal sin.
For starters, the man married a divorced woman, which the Church says is a mortal sin - an act of ongoing adultery..
The man also supports the murder of the unborn, to the point of birth ,after full gestation.
The man also supports just about every kind of sexual perversion.
And the man, as leader of a Country, wants to impose his mortal sins on all of the population, rather than confess those sins and ask for absolution.
And to add icing to the cake, so to speak, the man is a pathological liar, and has been, for is entire adult life.
If you are saying Mass, and the man shows up at the Communion rail, will you administer Holy Communion to him?
If the answer is yes, Your Eminence, you are part of the problem. And you are driving observant Catholics away from Christ's Church.
Have a nice day. And may God have mercy on your soul.

A true honest belief in God makes you behave in a certain way towards your fellow man. If your faith is true this behavior and associated values are the same throughout all races and cultures. THAT is missing. Secular humanism is no substitute.

"Why is society in trouble?"
It began when our (the world in general) belief and endearment to God was replaced with obeyance and conformance to a secular deep state. Consequently, our moral and spiritual compass was lost.
Ann Coulter published a book several years ago entitled, "Godless - The Church of Liberalism". She explains it all in detail as to what has happened to America in the political sense.
The Cardinal hits the nail on the head. But it is not like we all need to be running around like a bunch of religious zombies. There is a big difference between believing with heart and soul and being programmed to believe.

Solzhenitsyn's 1983 Templeton Address spoke about this in regards to what communism did to Russia. "More than half a century ago, while I was still a child, I recall hearing a number of older people offer the following explanation for the great disasters that had befallen Russia: Men have forgotten God; that’s why all this has happened.” The Lenins and Trotskys of the Democrat party are doing the same thing to America.

The disconnect with God comes when his "religious leaders" on earth forget their role in society and, in Cardinal Dolan's words, "mak(e) ourselves gods!" The well-dressed cleric getting into his Cadillac after asking the congregation for money to support this church is a fine example. A prelate dithering around the idea of sin, essentially finding ways to ignore that which is obvious and flooding the public square is another. It certainly doesn't help when men of the cloth are found to be diddling boys and young men with church support. Or, when a man of God keeps the homeless off the new carpet of his megachurch in a major storm. Then there are those Middle East death dealers...
Bless me, for I have sinned.

Those of us who are old enough remember that we didn't have all this chaos and woe when Sunday was a day for families to go to church. People can't be bothered anymore and there are generations who never go unless it's for a wedding....oh, or a funeral.
Now, Sunday morning is for activities such as sports events, graduations, certainly not for God.

The problem today, I believe, is in the pulpit. When have you heard sin, righteousness and the coming judgment preached from the pulpit? Has your pastor called out specifically any sexual sin from the pulpit? Does he rebuke/exhort as 2 Timothy 4 says he/she is to do or is the preaching tickling of ears? Where are the Jonathan Edwards preaching of old? Sinners in the hands of an Angry God? I believe the Church is responsible for the corruption in our country with the lukewarm teaching of the Laodicea Church of the Book of Revelation.

Support of mostly Catholic illegal immigration, which supports drug death and child trafficking BTW, puts more butts in the pews which translates to $$$ in the basket. Reclassifying assets so they are protected from lawsuits about abuse by Pedophilia Priests is another. And Pedophilia!! Are you kidding. buh bye! Jesus will be mad.

Dear Cardinal Dolan:
So nice to hear from you and you seem to be getting it ... finally. I lived in New York City the bulk of my 70+ years and probably attended Mass in your diocese at least 45 times a year for over 50+ years. And I moved around alot so it wasn't just one parish and one priest. That's about 2,500 opportunities to hear a live sermon.
I would say that after about 1980 I rarely ... if ever ... heard a homily that made a reference to sin and the pain of dying outside the state of grace. Now I know you've only been in charge since April of 2009, so it's not all your fault but that is over 13 years you've had control. What I have heard instead is a bunch of touchy/feely tripe about "getting along" and "tolerance" and "social justice"! Not once have I heard a priest say out loud that Jesus hates sin and will hold you accountable! Seriously. Not once since 1980.
The RC doesn't want to rock the boat so it has become the Peace Corps in robes.
Look no further than the mirror to find out why few come to church or fear being punished by an all-knowing & all-wise God.
All churches, not just yours, now are filled with grey hair and are 80% female for a reason!
Thanks for writing but you get a failing grade on supporting your God.
Regards
little guy

God is missing in families which is where the real problem lies. The family is under attack starting with the war in children. Abortion plus the sexual confusion agenda and schools pedogrooming hits the heart of the family. Add in missing dads and it’s perfect destruction of the nuclear family.

In addition to God, we have it too good here in this country. There's no good excuse for most people not being able to be successful. Too, the democrat party is dishonest and not a force for good. They spread hate, discontent and incompetence. They don't work for the people, they work for their party only. They want poor uninformed voters. They bribe people with welfare and false promises to get their votes.

This is a good response to the abortion supporters. I thought of this and think it is a good response. Ya know when you abort a baby it MAY be TRANS. You could be killing a TRANS/GAY person. THAT means dems are killing TRANS/GAY people. (THE HORROR). So dems are TRANSFOBIC and GAY PHOBIC because they are causing Trans/Gay people to never exist. Killing them even before they are born. They will never get the chance to ride around on a bike naked in a gay parade. Oh the injustice.
