The United States Postal Service (USPS) has announced plans to make at least 40 percent of its new delivery fleet electric. [snip] “The Postal Service reiterates its commitment to the fiscally responsible roll-out of electric-powered vehicles for America’s largest and oldest federal fleet. New NGDVs are expected to start servicing postal routes in late 2023,” the release said.

Look on the bright side. They are already broke so that won't be anything new.

Could be a good idea for an in-town fleet that can be back at the company charging station each night.

Can't wait to see where they get plugged in for recharging. Many post offices have cramped lots to park these vehicles overnight. There is no room for dozens of charging stations.

So when the entire force plugs in their vehicle at 5pm, the grid goes down.

You'll have to take out a 2nd mortgage to mail a postcard. Insanity.

These could prove useful in heavily Republican areas should the electric trucks happen to burst into flame and destroy mail-in ballots.

We know they are always late delivering, so it's just another few hours or a day.

Companies pay USPS to deliver trash to our mailbox, then we pay for trash service to take it away with our other trash. We get maybe two or three legit pieces of mail a month. With EVs it will take even longer and cost more.

Hmmmm. Out here in flyover land, a high percentage of the postal delivery people are rural and drive their own vehicles and driver 100's of miles a day to deliver the mail. Don't see that working well. Even in the cities, the miles driven would exceed how long the EV would be able to function. Someone certainly isn't thinking right.

Bad choice, the material requirements for electric vehicles will ruin the planet.

More expensive, requires more mining pollution for rare earth elements, vastly more expensive maintenance for a long-life vehicle, and requires more fossil fuel per mile do to the combined inefficiencies of generating electricity, transmission, transformer rectification to DC, battery chargers, and battery storage and motor losses. So, they pollute the air more than just burning gas. What's not to like?

Stupidity on steroids. Range decreases as load increases. There will be mail trucks out on the road that are innately unrecoverable. It ain't like ya can take a gallon of electricity out and get your truck going. So they'll go out and buy gigantic EV recovery rollbacks to pick up the stranded delivery trucks and then they'll have to buy mammoth EV lowboys to recover the stranded rollbacks carrying the stranded delivery trucks.
Your goobermint at work...

This will work for cities, but not for most suburban/rural areas. Also, it might not be so good in northern climates. I hope the USPS tests the concept, though, before going all in.

I can see it now, gas driven recovery vehicles with their Honda generators, out on the sides of the roads, recharging the EV's!
