Bangkok—A scandal engulfing Vietnam’s foreign ministry and a number of other public and private bodies are testing Hanoi’s reliability as a linchpin of an anticipated U.S.-led Asian economic framework and as a bulwark in the international fight to tame the COVID-19 pandemic. Foreign Ministry, tourism, air, medical and manufacturing officials have been arrested and expelled from the ruling Communist Party in recent weeks. They are accused of pocketing $240 million by defrauding frightened Vietnamese citizens into paying inflated fees for government-arranged COVID-19 repatriation flights and cumbersome permits and of price-fixing emergency health care and equipment. The scandal and the regime’s crackdown have given a

Only $240 million? That's chump change to America's politicians, who also never get arrested or thrown out of their jobs.

Funny how the Commies are more committed to turning a buck than capitalists. BTW: Vietnam is one of the most capitalistic countries I've ever visited. Every urban street corner has at least one pho cooker going from morning to night serving up that delicious soup. A few years ago I was in Hanoi during Tet, and the city was bedecked in Ho banners. One Vietnamese remarked to me that within 10 years this would all be gone. "We put it up for the old people".

Governments should put a moratorium on the use of biofuels and lift bans on genetic modification of crops, a green campaigning group has urged, in the face of a growing global food crisis that threatens to engulf developing nations. Ending the EU’s requirement for biofuels alone would free up about a fifth of the potential wheat exports from Ukraine, and even more of its maize exports, enough to make a noticeable difference to stretched food supplies, according to analysis by the campaign group RePlanet. About 3.3m tonnes of wheat were used in 2020 as feedstock for EU biofuels, and Ukraine’s 2020 wheat exports came to about 16.4m tonnes.

Democrats are facing their worst political environment in over a decade heading into November’s mid-term elections. Republicans lead the generic ballot and hold a solid structural advantage in competing for the House of Representatives. And despite concerns about candidate quality, the GOP is also favored to take control of the Senate. The correlation between presidential approval and their party’s mid-term prospects also can’t be ignored. Joe Biden has hit the lowest poll numbers of his term, with a recent Times/Siena poll showing him at just 33 percent approval with only 13 percent believing the country is on the right track.
