Another fatal accident involving an electric vehicle left two Lompoc, California, natives dead last week near Gainesville, Florida.
A 66-year-old female and 67-year-old male inside a 2015 Tesla Model S exited Interstate 75 and entered a rest stop on Wednesday, Fox Business reported. The vehicle proceeded to crash into the back of a parked 18-wheeler, and both people in the Tesla died.

They can keep your electric and your self driving cars.

It appears that some models can't "see" or distinguish the back end of semi/trailers while on autopilot.

Some thing is odd with this crash. Those bars you see hanging below the rear of the trailer are called Mansfield bars, after Jayne Mansfield who died in a similar type of crash before trailers had those bars. On a foggy night the car she was riding in slammed in the back and underneath a trailer killing her. After her death those bars were installed on trailers to prevent cars from going underneath a trailer, So it´s puzzling looking at this crash picture how far that car got underneath that trailer.

Nothing to do with being electric.
Everything to do with self driving cars. Self drive should be renamed to Guinea pig mode as we're all experimental subjects of this new technology.

Auto Pilot in automobiles is one of the most stupid ideas ever conceived. First, it cannot anticipate the movements of other vehicles, pedestrians, horses, or deer farther out than a couple hundred yards. The human mind can do this and does do it continuously. Now to the flaws of humans (which are many). How often do you see other drivers do really stupid things. In order to avoid getting killed you have to move quickly and instinctively to save yourself. Computers can no do that very well. Last but not least there are the morons that say hey my car can just drive me to where I want to go. I’ll turn on the auto pilot and take a nap. Trust me, there are people out there that stupid. I could go on.

Another auto accident where the identified auto is a....gasp....Tesla. I guess Musk trying to buy one of their liberal sacred cows has stirred them up!

It's more a study in how government activism inevitably spawns more government jobs. Here, the new government hires will be managing the narrative to protect the reputations of the old government greenies, ensuring the American people hate the right people in the story.

This reminds me of a Toyota accudent where the gas pedal got stuck and the car crashed killing everyone. Panic sets in. Your brain stops thinking. If your gas pedal gets stuck it auto pilot won’t engage or something similar just remember to put the transmission in neutral and apply the brakes until you safely stop. Then turn off the engine.

Were these people asleep? Did the car not have a brake pedal? I'm assuming that the mechanism that controlled the self-driving mode can be disabled upon pressing on the brake pedal just like cruise control.

#8 I believe that all cars still have a mechanical emergency brake. Why not pull that handle to stop???

Because so many people freeze up in an emergency.
There are a lot of things I admire about Elon Musk just as there are things that I don’t like at all but I certainly admire how his brain is always spinning and throwing out new ideas, even if some of them are ridiculous. These stupid cars of his that made him so rich could also make him reviled in history.

#5 is correct. The sensors in self-drivers can only react to an event it 'sees'. It can't anticipate when something may happen. Despite our flaws, humans are still better drivers than computers.

Cars and phones get smarter people just keep getting dumber. This has nothing to do with 'electric' it has to do with an over engineered smart car with too many apps and gadgets. A top model gas powered luxury car got poor rating for being over engineered with electronics. I get the impression this article wants you to hate Elon Musk with his Tesla auto.

RE: #3....check the picture, the mansefeild bars ripped right through the Tesla body, no engine to stop it/slow it. Impact bumpers are at a height to match car bumpers, not truck bumpers, the body above it all plastic..
While this particular incident may have been a self driving issue....anyone carrying that much speed off an exit ramp and into a parking lot should have "Noticed" they were not on the Freeway anymore, and started braking well before an impact. Similar things happen daily with people dozing while plain old cruise control is on...and did when a broomstick was used before cruise control was even an option. Suicide should not be ruled out while investigating.

After 30 years of managing software development in Fortune 100’s, I can tell you that the software is junk, the hardware is junk, the Operating Systems are junk! Always have been…always will be! I would NEVER let a computer control anything that I’m driving!!! Aww…we’re so sorry that Release (1A.f3789.9451.6634) had a bug! Oh well…we fixed it in the next release! Testing? Testing is for losers! We just slam it into PROD! Yea us!!!

Completely agree with #5. A good driver will be constantly reading the 'body language' of surrounding cars....survival demands it! OTOH, I'd bet a bundle there was driver-error involved somewhere here.

Car companies should NEVER have been allowed to call driver-assistance software an "autopilot." That term gives stupid people a false sense of security that their car can operate like a jet airplane flying through the mostly empty skies.

I use the cruise control when I drive cross country, but I also keep an eye on the traffic which can change at any time. It hasn’t been determined that the FSD was engaged prior to the crash. I’m thinking that it was, but the driver was not paying attention and didn’t correct in time. FSD is great but it’s not a replacement for a human driver. When a Tesla is involved in a crash or fire, I notice that reporting is more exploitative. Elon Musk has fallen out of favor with the left because he has expressed that he’s voting Republican. They’re doing to him now what was done to Pres. Trump. I’m not going to give up my ICE vehicle for an EV, but I’m open to buying a Tesla someday soon.

This may be crass and insensitive... but I see it as a case for Darwin's Law of Natural Selection.
Anybody who elects to put the car in "autopilot" and trusts his life to that hardware/software is seriously lacking in judgment. (I once had a rental car for a few days that kept itself in the traffic lane. I didn't even know it 'til I was motoring down a Jersey freeway and it resisted my manual lane-change effort. It was pretty amazing technology... but I would NEVER trust it if I wasn't also fully tuned in to my road situation. The stakes are way too high!)
