Japan’s ruling party has won a comfortable victory in elections overshadowed by the assassination of the former prime minister, Shinzo Abe. Exit polls showed that the Liberal Democratic party (LDP), which Abe led until he resigned in 2020, had secured more than half the 125 seats being contested in the 248-seat upper house. The LDP and its junior coalition partner, Komeito, were projected to win more than 63 seats, according to a Kyodo news agency exit poll. The public broadcaster NHK said the parties would win between 69 and 83 seats. The coalition needed to secure 55 seats to retain their majority in the upper house – the less powerfu

We’re just a few short months away from the midterm elections which, if polling and the sentiment of most Americans are reliable indicators, are going to be absolutely brutal for Democrats looking to maintain their razor-thin majorities in the House and Senate. The writing on the wall is so bad for Democrats right now that there’s an open rebellion taking place within, with frustrated Democrats angrily pointing to Joe Biden – and each other – as the reasons why they are predicted to lose a not so insignificant number of seats and perhaps even their hold on Congress come the fall in what some have predicted might be “historic” midterm election year losses

First Lady Jill Biden told a group of progressive Texas Hispanic voters they were as “unique” as “breakfast tacos” during a speech Monday in San Antonio. Biden addressed a crowd assembled for the UnidosUS Annual Conference, which began on Saturday. According to video of her remarks obtained by Jorge Bonilla of the the conservative Media Research Center, she compared attendees to breakfast tacos. She also mispronounced the word “bodega” when she said “bogeda.” “[Raul Yzaguirre] helped build this organization with the understanding that the diversity of this community, as distinct as the bogedas of The Bronx

It's finally here. Literally decades in the making, the first image from NASA's $10 billion James Webb Space Telescope was released Monday evening by President Joe Biden at a White House briefing. The first image shows thousands of galaxies – including the faintest objects ever observed – which have appeared in Webb’s view for the first time. This is the deepest view of the cosmos ever captured. "Today is an historic day" said President Biden. "The first image from the Webb Space Telescope represents a historic moment for science and technology," he said. "For astronomy and space exploration." "And for America and all humanity," he added.

The Biden administration said Monday that hospitals must ensure patients can receive abortions when deemed medically necessary in emergency situations in spite of bans in many states on the procedure in most cases. The Department of Health and Human Services said a federal law, the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act, stipulates that physicians must perform an abortion in an emergency regardless of state law. "Under the law, no matter where you live, women have the right to emergency care — including abortion care,”

An attorney representing Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) appeared before the court Monday in an effort to shut down Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares’ grand jury investigation into the Virginia school district. Within hours after appearing in court, the motion for an injunction failed and the investigation will continue, 7News reporter Nick Minock tweeted Monday afternoon. The hearing was closed to the public and the transcript was sealed. The investigation, mandated by Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin, was launched after the same high school transgender student allegedly sexually assaulted two females

The American people's trust in news outlets has hit a historic low, according to Gallup’s annual survey on confidence in major U.S. institutions. It's like they've discovered that "straight news" isn't their primary goal. Both newspapers and television news have seen another drop in confidence over the past year, with each losing an average five percent of people who said they had a “great deal” of trust in such institutions. Gallup has been measuring "confidence in institutions" since 1973, and annually since 1993. Television news is now considered the second least-trusted institution in America, after Congress,

Steve Bannon, the onetime strategist to Donald Trump who was involved in the former president’s efforts to invalidate his defeat in the 2020 election, has opened discussions with the House January 6 select committee about testifying to the inquiry into the Capitol attack. The offer of cooperation could mark a breakthrough for the panel, which has sought Bannon’s testimony for months, believing he could provide unique insight into the inner-workings of Trump’s unlawful push to stop the congressional certification of his loss to Joe Biden from taking place. Bannon signalled in an email to the select committee, first obtained by the Guardian, that he was prepared to initiate discussions

For my money, the Biden administration has been the most incoherent and disjointed of the modern era, and that qualifier is only included due to a lack of recorded detail prior. Press consternation over the “chaos” inside the former Trump administration seems laughably quaint now, as the current White House sets records for staff turnover. No one seems to know what’s going on, and that includes the president himself. Every public appearance just accentuates the dysfunction. Biden and his handlers are constantly reacting. Leadership and forethought are concepts so foreign that they might as well be of alien origin. Even the brightest minds would have a hard time keeping things

Fewer Americans than ever say that they believe that the Bible should be taken literally, while a record number of Americans now say they view the holy book as a compilation of "fables, legends, history and moral precepts recorded by man," according to a Gallup poll. One in five Americans surveyed said the Bible is the "actual word of God, to be taken literally," about half off from the high point in 1984. The survey also shows that as fewer Americans are ranking religion as "very important," the number of those who believe the Bible came directly from God decreases.

The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) has warned power consumers in Texas to conserve energy on Monday afternoon and evening because there will not be enough wind power to operate the power grid reliably in peak demand. (Tweet) Though Texas is known for its role in the oil industry, it is also the nation’s number-one producer of wind energy. During a cold snap in the winter of 2021, however, wind turbines froze and many Texans found themselves without electricity. Now that scenario is likely to repeat itself, albeit due to high temperatures that are accompanied by calm conditions.

President Joe Biden blamed Republicans for soaring gas prices in a Sunday tweet, moving on from the “Putin-price hike” shtick. Biden attempted to shift blame onto Republicans as a way to drive up support amongst voters for the November midterms. “Republicans are doing nothing but obstructing our efforts to crack down on gas-price gouging, lower food prices, lower healthcare costs, and hopefully, soon, lower your prescription drug costs,” Biden tweeted. “This is not right. And that’s why this election is going to be so darn important.” (Tweet)
