Fascist officials of Aspen threaten to

The Aspen Times months ago published a thinly supported story suggesting that one of the local billionaires was in league with Vladimir Putin. The billionaire filed suit against the newspaper for defamation. The newspaper wanted to settle the case. Meanwhile, the newspaper was recently bought by a family-owned group of several dozen small newspapers. Much of the family are Republicans, which may be the determinative fact in this story. The new owners asked that the newspaper staff refrain from commenting on the pending litigation while settlement talks were ongoing. That’s standard and prudent in legal proceedings.

Comments:

These lefties are autocratic by nature. They simply enjoy it.

An interesting little slice of the two America's facing off. A liberal rag, The Aspen Times, got itself into defamation trouble and became party to a lawsuit. Financial trouble followed. They were bought out by a successful conservative small-town newspaper chain, Ogden Newspapers. The new owners directed staff not to publish any material related to the lawsuit, standard legal advice in court proceedings. A reporter, the editor and his replacement did not comply and were fired. The towns liberal elite, including the mayor and council members, former members and elected officials of surrounding bergs wrote a letter to the new owners expressing their outrage at this attack on "democracy!". They threatened individual actions, including pulling ads and all involvement with the paper. (Link provided to the original messages from the new publisher and the town elites.) Beaton gleefully points out that Ogden Newspapers are protected by the First Amendment and the issue will be decided in Federal Court in Denver, where little old Aspen and their elite don't quite have so much sway. Should be a good old-fashioned western shoot-out. Saddle-up buckaroos, its time to play cowboys and commies!

Remember when leftists were all about free speech? When did that change? Why did that change? The answer is: Free speech was only ever a means to an end for them. When they got their free speech and made their arguments, they failed to win over the American people. Then, when the speech from their opponents was too successful, they switched to the repression of speech, because the end was never freedom.

This is most interesting as regards what is happening in leftyville Aspen. We drive through Aspen regularly on the way back from some RV'ing trips with our 15-year old fifth wheel. I, frankly, don't see the attraction to living or visiting there. Heavy traffic is a total joke and folks packed into the grocery stores and beer pubs like fish. A lot of snooties with their rebellious noses high up in the air on the sidewalks. Even on weekdays. Take away their fake wealth and they will straighten up. The ski area, Aspen Mountain, really isn't all that great either in the winter. The snowpack is over-rated and frankly not worth skiing over rocks with those $1,500 skis. And the $225 lift tickets are a rip-off. And the scenery isn't that good unless one craves for a buttload of private jets parked at the airport. But yes, the Maroon Bells are beautiful. However, I sense a political/social shift happening in Aspen. The long timers there have finally smelled the coffee and see what the leftism has brought Aspen. Wealth does not bring happiness and brings mis-guidedness. Let's see what happens next.

Leftists were never about free speech. They were about silencing people who were willing to debate them. Their 'free speech' was always about telling everyone else to shut up so they could talk, unopposed.

I hope the new owners do sue the Town Of Aspen and all the co-signers of that letter in Federal court. These little town bullies need to hoist up by their self-righteous petards and to experience some old fashioned justice. Sounds like the whole gvt of Aspen is being run by some world-class narcissists. I wonder if these people ever met a mirror they didn't like.

I spent a "sabbatical" 18 months in between soph and Jr years of college in a little town of Cripple Creek (pop. 400). Aside from getting an unusual amount of attention from the sheriff of Teller County due in no small part to some townies who befriended me, it was a life of pumping gas, clearing land for roads outside of town and cruising Bennet Ave on weekends. I would have to say that C.C. was mostly a ghost town. The town Council thought that allowing gambling would be a great way to lure people from Down Below ( Co. Springs). Well, I had a chance to visit after 50 years being gone and all the businesses on the main drag reminded me of Las Vegas. Shame, they used to keep all the brothels and shantys south of Bennett across the Creek. Bottom line, liberals will either screw up a natural economy or make sure no one can enjoy their little utopia as only they can define it.

For years, a public high school football coach made a practice of saying short prayers after football games. He prayed whether he won or lost. Some of his players typically joined in, and some didn’t. For that, he was fired. This has been a long drive for the left. It started on their own 2-yard line about two centuries ago with Karl Marx scorning the masses he pretended to champion by mocking their “opiate” of religion. Marx and his fellow travelers preferred the opiate of opiate.

Readers will remember the Aspen Times. They’re the little but old – venerable, we’re told – newspaper of Aspen. These days it’s a hard left rag in a hard left town of limousine liberals and the locals who both castigate and soak them to the shameless delight of all concerned. One of the frequent perks for Aspen Times employees, as for many other members of the ruling Aspen establishment, is taxpayer-subsidized housing for dimes on the dollars – often slopeside. I was the token conservative columnist with the Aspen Times for seven years. But I grew a little big for my britches.

It’s a biological fact that, generally speaking, males in relation to females are naturally larger, more physical, more ambitious, stronger, faster, cruder, stinkier, more competitive and hornier. Those traits are wired into them as tightly as the DNA in their Y chromosome, and are all awash in the testosterone hormone produced in their testicles. At times, those traits can be problematic. At other times, they can save the day, save the world, or save a child. But men are out of fashion these days. Boys, too. Mind you,

I figured that Tom Cruise playing “Maverick” in the sequel to Top Gun would be all woke. He’d also be at least bi or gay, and probably trans. Look what Hollywood did to Star Wars. After all, something like 20% of attention starved, navel-gazing, influence-susceptible college students with too much time on their hands – I’m talking about the movie-going crowd – now “identify” (whatever that means) as something other than what used to be called “normal.” And is still called “normal” by statisticians, given that only 2% of the population at large fall outside that category.

Imagine two creatures a few hundred thousand years ago. One is a human that is casually observing the other, a 750-pound Eurasian cave lion. The beast (the lion, that is) lunges at the human (who is not a beast at all – the cranium of humans at that time was about the same as ours, and the cranium of Neanderthals was bigger). The lion shreds our would-be ancestor like so much pulled pork. What happened? Why did this human with as much grey matter as you or I, or more, fail to see this coming? Those stories are scurrilous and vulgar lies which distracted the nation and the Trump administration for years and for which someone should be held accountable. But Sussmann was not the person who manufactured those lies. He was just the bag guy who passed them on to the FBI. And so those lies are not what Sussmann has been charged with. He’s been charged with a more pedestrian lie – the lie of telling the FBI he was not working for a client when in fact he was.

Some 63 million American babies have been aborted since Roe v. Wade. Almost 40% were black even though blacks comprise only about 13% of the population. The black abortion rate is nearly five times the white rate. Justice Clarence Thomas observed in a Supreme Court case a few years ago that in New York City a black baby is more likely to be aborted than to be born. Altogether, that amounts to over 20 million dead black babies since Roe v. Wade. To put that number in perspective, the number of unarmed blacks killed by police in that period is a few dozen – amounting to something like

Ukraine reports that it has killed about 26,000 invading Russian soldiers. Ukraine’s reports of Russian losses – unlike Russia’s own reports – have been fairly reliable, say observers, though NATO estimates a somewhat lower number. As for Ukraine’s own dead, they appear to be significantly fewer than Russia’s even after including the civilians that Russia has murdered. Ukraine’s figures are not inconsistent with a report from the U.K. that over one-fourth of Russia’s 150,000-man army attacking Ukraine, amounting to perhaps 40,000, has been rendered “combat ineffective.” That means they’re dead or wounded badly enough that they can’t fight.

Politically motivated leaks are no big deal in today’s partisan politics. But something happened today that is utterly unprecedented. A draft Supreme Court opinion overturning Roe v. Wade was leaked. To my knowledge, this has never happened before. The leak was obviously by either one of the three Justices in the liberal wing of the Court, or one of their 10-12 clerks who have access to the internal deliberations of the Court. It was presumably for the purpose of ginning up a public outcry to pressure one or more of the majority justices to change his or her mind.

His performance as a main character in the classic 1988 comedy Beetlejuice was solid, though Michael Keaton stole the show in that film. And Baldwin was adequate in the movies Hunt for Red October in 1990 and Glengarry Glen Ross in 1992. He was even decent in the terrific drama The Departed in 2006. Indeed, Baldwin had been blessed with good looks and enough talent to make himself a wealthy man with a robust career.
