More than 21 million paper tax returns are still waiting for processing by the Internal Revenue Service, as the tax agency struggles to swiftly disburse refunds to American households, according to a watchdog report released on Wednesday. Most taxpayers file their returns electronically, but millions of others — disproportionately the elderly — still fill out their returns manually. National Taxpayer Advocate Erin Collins said in her report that the IRS backlog this year is 21.3 million paper returns, 7 percent more than the 20 million that were awaiting processing at the same time last year. The report may add to the political

They're overworked and underpaid, their systems are antiquated despite endless amounts of money available to them to waste, and they're working like dancing heroes Amid the Pandemic. Meanwhile, no Republican has ever made a credible move to shut this agency down and shift us to a simplified system that does not also involve an enormously expensive side industry of accountants and tax attorneys and lobbyists to support it, all of which places an incredible drag on the economy and harms US competitiveness.

I don’t even know why they need to bother to collect taxes. Can’t the Dims and the Diapered Doofus just print it? (Electronically of course; we’re not Cretans, you know).

I filed my return in February and still haven't gotten my refund. Next year, I'll make sure I don't get a refund.

But they just spent $775,000 on ammunition purchases! They wanted 180,000 new IRS agents under build back broke, but their intent was to harass Trump supporters by auditing to infinity. Go to flat tax that can be done on a post card —you made this much money —times a percent and then subtract from withheld amount to determine refund or pay. So easy a caveman or democrat can do it.

The way the Fed prints money and Congress and admins spend it taxes meaningless and just another government control mechanism. At this time, accounting for all US debt and unfunded liabilities, every citizen" is liable for over $500,000.00

How many of the IRS staff are still working from home? I bet it is a very high number, but no one ever asks, and the IRS never discloses it. The IRS is trying to force taxpayers to file electronically by slow walking the processing of returns. It is working. My sister finally got her 2020 tax return processed, after providing 3 copies to the IRS, and an additional one to the U.S. Post Office, which lost it, and did not respond to inquiries, as their website says they would respond in 14 days. The IRS could allow unprocessed older returns to be filed electronically, but they don't allow that, and they don't process manual re-submissions of older returns, putting those in the unprocessed file. The IRS could get all the backlog processed by requiring their staff to show up for work.

7% more returns for '21 than '20. You don't get earned income tax credits if you don't file for it.

How quick is the IRS to get tax due payments? Bet they have priority. For refund processing, they are stacked and stacked waiting for input into the system The IRS is not in a hurry. The IRS has your money and wont give it back. Only 21 Million - the govt is poor at estimating the degree of the problem.

From the speech patterns, every single person I have ever spoken to at IRS was black, no doubt there because of affirmative action, not because they had the necessary skills.
Hire millions of affirmative action folks....and nothing gets done because everyone is incompetent, and most are certain that no matter how little they care, and no matter how little they work, their skin color will protect them from being fired.

I finally managed a tax refund on my 2021 taxes. Filed electronically in February and in two weeks received q letter from the IRS stating that there was a verification problem (I have used the same bank account and home address for twenty years), and instructed me to file by mail. I did, and still no return. My son filed for a return in 2020, and is still waiting for a return.
A national sales instead of income tax would solve a lot of problems.

I filed in February..paper of course…no refund yet! The latest it’s everrrrrrr been in 58 years of marriage ! Their phone system is a joke! Next year I hope I can adjust my payments & not be waitingggggg for a refund ….my guess most are still working from home! My advise is they could avoid a lot of calls & complaints if they could let people know they received the filing. We don’t know if it’s lost , an error or whatever???? I received my state refund in weeks…maybe they can take some lessons from the states!!!

What are the additional 20,000 IRS agents doing that were hired as a result of Obamacare? Sitting on their thumbs?

I filed an amended return electronically on March 28 in order to claim one of my two minor kids since their dad died on March 15 ( he could claim one and I could claim the other)
I’m still waiting for a paper check and I need that refund. Right now I’m living on survivor’s benefits and not working because my kids need me present and raising them right now. That refund will get us through the summer and it’s a long time coming. Fortunately, I did get the back child support when his widow sold their house, so that’s something, but I’ll feel better with that refund in the bank.

There are not enough employees in the IRS. Interestingly the Department of Veterans Affairs has 307,000 employees, whereas the IRS has 79,000 full time employees. Biden claims he will hire 82,000 more, but those won't be ready to do anything more than say, "Mayh ah hep yoo?," when you call them up.

If you owe the iRS, they cash the check immediately.
If the IRS owes you, another story.
Government employees don't have to work hard, as it is almost impossible to fire them.

My father died a bit over three years ago. We haven't been able to settle his estate because we're waiting on his last tax return. It's beyond frustrating.

Yep!
I'm one of those old geezers who file their return on Paper.
All those assurances that electronic returns are 'absolutely safe'.... just like all those other assurances that your electronically-transmitted information (credit cards, etc.) are 'absolutely secure'..... until there's a 'hack' and some low-life steals a hundred million or so people's information. You can cancel your credit card, get a new card with a different number, and move on..... but you can't change your Social Security number, address, and all the other information on your tax return.
No, my data does NOT go over the Internet. It goes by 'Snail Mail' with 'delivery confirmation'.
If the thugs want MY information, they're going to have to steal it directly from the IRS!
