Michelle Farris never expected to become homeless, but here she was, sifting through garbage and towering piles of debris accumulated along a roadway on the outskirts of northeast Portland. Farris, 51, has spent much of her adult life in Oregon and has vivid memories of this area alongside the lumbering Columbia River when it was pristine, a place for quiet walks. (Snip) Broken chairs, busted-up car parts, empty booze bottles, soiled blankets, discarded clothes, crumpled tarps. Every so often, it was more than she could bear, and she attacked the clutter around her own RV, trying furiously to organize the

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day
Give a man a free tent, free sleeping bag, free drugs, and free food
And he becomes a burden to society who will never stray.

Subsidize something and you get more of it. Bunch of morons and it is hard to keep a job if you're shooting drugs in your veins everyday. Just a simple observation.

The cesspool grows wider and deeper. The "progressive" electorate sheep have spoken. Enjoy wearing your snorkels. Cheers!

Open air lunatic asylums are not a good idea. We put brick walls, bars on the windows and locked doors on the mental asylums for good reasons. Some of these people cannot be roaming free.

No sympathy. They got what they deserve. This is what you get when liberals make decisions based solely on emotion, theory, pixie dust, and devoid of common sense. Common sense tells us what the outcome was going to be.

"We want the criminal element out, even if it means taking people to jail.” Well, duh. Now who is going to put them there, now that you've cut the police and tied the hands of the ones still on the job? With universal vote-by-mail-fraud elections here in Portland, even as the idiot lib voters wise up, it doesn't change the outcome of "elections" here.

On the other hand, give us more articles like this in the LA Times and maybe the rush of California Marxists moving up here to escape the problems they've caused in LA will subside.

In the running for worst mayor in the country Ted Wheeler is a commie stooge and says giving the homeless generous support has nothing to do with the multitudes.
FTA: Voters in the broader region of Multnomah, Washington and Clackamas counties in 2020 approved a tax measure to bolster funding for homelessness. The measure, which increases taxes for higher-income businesses and households, is expected to raise $2.5 billion by 2030.
They're getting what they deserve.
Gee, business moving out and homeless moving in? I can't imagine why.

It is always someone or something else's fault. It always will be until either they take responsibility or die, sad.

You get more of what you subsidize and less of what you tax. The solution is to tax homelessness.

As long as the brain-dead lie-beral sheeple of Portland continue to elect radical socialist lie-beral city governments, they are going to drown more and more under their own "Pollyanna" socialist disasters!!!!
I live in the lie-beral cesspool of Austin, TX. I am one of very few conservatives here. Our city council and mayor passed city ordinances allowing the homeless to camp on any public land. Within a year, our once-beautiful city looked pretty much exactly how Portland sounds today. Miracle of miracles, even the otherwise brain-dead lie-berals of Austin rose up, got enough signatures to force a vote, and last November voted solidly to ban public camping by the homeless!!!! The city council and mayor have been trying to find ways to punish the peasants to daring to defy them ever since. But, thank God, it actually worked, and most of the homeless camps are gone.

Totally agree with #6.
We had very little homelessness back when we had mental hospitals.
Much better than living on the streets.
As for those who are not mentally ill--the addicts and the lazy--there are plenty of jobs around these days. ..flipping burgers, bussing tables, cutting lawns...coding.
Go find one or starve.

How is living in an RV being homeless? And where did all those RVs come from in the first place? And maybe all that garbage, debris, and drug use is a clue to the type of people involved. Maybe the trash isn't just a side effect of being homeless -- maybe it's the whole essence of where homelessness comes from.

Police departments across the country must be giving problematic homeless people, AKA bums, bus tickets to Portland.

Article says Portland has been generous in supporting the homeless. And they cannot figure out why vast areas of the city now look like an open-air Dumpster.
