CNN had its smallest audience in 22 years on Friday among the demographic most coveted by advertisers as the network continued its ongoing struggle to attract viewers. CNN averaged only 56,000 viewers between ages 25-54 on June 17. The last time CNN had a smaller turnout among the critical category was July 10, 2000. Friday was also CNN’s smallest weekday audience among total viewers since June 2014, as the network settled for only 283,000 average viewers. By comparison, Fox News averaged 1.4 million total viewers and 209,000 in the key demo. It was Fox News' largest advantage over CNN since August 6, 2015. President Biden urged Congress to suspend the federal gas tax in a speech at the White House on Wednesday.
Biden explained that the federal suspension, if enacted, would pause an 18 cent-per-gallon tax on gasoline and 24 cent-per-gallon tax on diesel. While those tax revenues are generally directed toward the Highway Trust Fund for upkeep of American roads, Biden claimed the tax could be suspended without harming the fund.
“With the tax revenues up this year, and our deficit down over $1.6 trillion this year alone, we’ll still be able to fix our highways and bring down prices of gas,” said Biden. “We can do both
President Biden on Wednesday will call on Congress to suspend the federal gas tax for three months as Americans contend with record-high gas prices.
The gas tax holiday would cost roughly $10 billion, according to a fact sheet released by the White House. However, Biden will ask Congress to enact the suspension without harming the Highway Trust Fund, which receives funds from the tax revenue.
The president will suggest Congress use other revenues to make up for the loss, the New York Times reported.
