The details of the horrific massacre at a Texas elementary school continue to emerge, and it seems the more we learn the worse things look for the police who responded to the call. Let me preface this by saying two things: First, we still don’t have all the details about the shooting in which an 18-year-old gunman killed 19 students and two teachers and wounded 17 other people at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. Second, police have incredibly difficult jobs, requiring them to make split-second decisions while under enormous pressure under extremely dangerous and stressful situations. On June 8, a potentially disastrous situation was mostly averted at the Freeport liquefied-natural-gas (LNG) plant outside of Houston, Texas. An explosion at the plant took place after a leak in one of the pipes released a cloud of natural gas into the area and it burst into flames. Fortunately, the gas dissipated quickly and the blast didn’t extend past the enclosed area of the compound. Local firefighters had the flames extinguished quickly and there were no injuries reported, but the plant suffered damage that will limit its output for much of the year.
Normally, a story like this wouldn’t raise many eyebrows. LNG is notoriously challenging to work

Yesterday’s Rasmussen survey of likely voters finds that 57% consider Joe Biden’s performance on the economy to be “poor.” That strikes me as a death knell: there is no way a president viewed in such a negative light on the economy can be re-elected. President Biden urged Congress to suspend the federal gas tax in a speech at the White House on Wednesday.
Biden explained that the federal suspension, if enacted, would pause an 18 cent-per-gallon tax on gasoline and 24 cent-per-gallon tax on diesel. While those tax revenues are generally directed toward the Highway Trust Fund for upkeep of American roads, Biden claimed the tax could be suspended without harming the fund.
“With the tax revenues up this year, and our deficit down over $1.6 trillion this year alone, we’ll still be able to fix our highways and bring down prices of gas,” said Biden. “We can do both
