More than half a dozen affordable housing projects in California are costing more than $1 million per apartment to build, a record-breaking sum that makes it harder to house the growing numbers of low-income Californians who need help paying rent, a Times review of state data found. The seven subsidized housing developments, all in Northern California, received state funding within the last two years and are under construction or close to breaking ground. When completed, they will provide homes for more than 600 families.(Snip)In comparison with private sector development, low-income housing is often saddled with more stringent environmental and labor standards. Texas-based American Airlines will be cancelling flights to Ithaca and Islip, New York, as well as Toledo, Ohio, in September, blaming a lack of pilots, according to local reports. “In response to the regional pilot shortage affecting the airline industry, American Airlines has made the difficult decision to end service,” American Airlines spokeswoman Andrea Koos told the Dallas Morning News.(Snip)Across the board, the industry is facing a pilot shortage caused by thousands of retirements and buyouts meant to save airlines money during the COVID-19 pandemic, when travel had dwindled. Post-pandemic travel picked up faster than airlines expected, leaving carriers to scramble to find people

Postmates, Burger King, Dr Pepper and other brands have released commercials with “top” and “bottom” gay sex references as part of Pride Month advertising campaigns that are worrying some LGBTQ advocates. The sexualized advertising is a startling pivot for a month when commercials traditionally have emphasized rainbows and same-sex couples embracing each other, Matt Lavietes reported Monday for NBC News.(Snip)“Sexualizing any marketing campaign in this way is a risk,” Mr. Witeck said. “But doing so to target LGBTQ consumers has greater risk because it overly sexualizes same-sex attraction in ways that we’ve been trying to normalize in many ways.”

With most Americans fearing an economic slowdown, President Biden lashed out at a female reporter Monday for asking about the possibility of the US economy lurching into a recession as rising interest rates chase soaring inflation. As the president strolled on the sand near his vacation home in Rehoboth Beach, Del., he was asked about economic experts “saying a recession is more likely than ever.” “Not—the majority of them aren’t saying that. Come on, don’t make things up, okay?” responded Biden. “Now you sound like a Republican politician. I’m joking. That was a joke.” The president, who on Saturday fell off his bike nearby, proceeded to call for higher taxes

In May, a South Philadelphia man stepped out of his house for a smoke when police said a gun-wielding man rode up on a bicycle and demanded money. The homeowner dropped his cigarette, pulled out his licensed gun, and fatally shot the would-be robber in the head.
In March, an assistant manager at a Dollar General store in North Philadelphia used his legal gun to shoot a man who police said burst into the store in a ski mask, demanded money, and threatened to kill the cashier. “I’m opening up the register for you, sir,” said the manager, who instead pulled his own handgun and shot the robber

US women's soccer hero Megan Rapinoe has come out strongly in favor of including transgender women in women's sport, labelling the arguments against 'cruel and disgusting'. The veteran soccer star, who co-captained the United States Women's National Team in 2019 as they won a second successive World Cup, was dismissive of the notion that trans women are dominating women's sports and thus need regulating. Instead, she argued that excluding them from competing at lower levels is cruel, as people value their 'kid's high school volleyball team' ahead of the lives and wellbeing of transgender people.(Snip)'I'm 100 per cent supportive of trans inclusion,' she told TIME.

When it absolutely, positively has to get there … trust your bodyguards! Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz used members of her taxpayer-funded security detail to help her move to her new million-dollar digs—potentially running afoul of ethics rules, The Post has learned.(Snip)Katz also regularly had her security detail show up at her home on weekday mornings in time for her to accompany her kids as the cops drove them to school, after which she returned home, dressed for work and left around 10 a.m., sources said. “She uses the detectives as her personal car service,” one source said. The moves appear to run afoul of provisions

New York City needs to “do better” in preventing black residents from being driven out of their neighborhoods, Mayor Eric Adams said on Sunday, during an address marking the Juneteenth holiday. Speaking in Central Park, Adams compared the modern-day uprooting of people of color from neighborhoods across the US—including the five boroughs—to slavery. “When I was in Ghana last year, [I] saw how families were displaced, torn apart and brought over to America through slavery in the hulls of the ships, living in dungeons, spending months and months living in their human waste, having their babies taken from them, and saw them dispersed and displaced,” he said.

The radical pro-abortion group, Jane’s Revenge, is planning more acts of domestic terrorism when the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision on Roe v. Wade is revealed, dubbed a “Night of Rage: An Autonomous Call to Action Against Patriarchal Supremacy.” The group posted its plans on the Anarchists Library website at the end of May in expectation of the ruling, expected sometime in June. Here are some excerpts from the manifesto: This is an event that should inspire rage in millions of people who can get pregnant…and yet, the response thus far has been tepid.(Snip)The next step is carrying that anger out into the world and expressing it physically.
