Thieves used power tools to break into a Brooklyn church, stole a $2 million, jewel-encrusted relic—and cut the head off a statue of an angel, cops said Sunday. The scoundrels entered St. Augustine’s Roman Catholic Church at 116 Sixth Avenue and used the tools to cut open an altar sometime between Thursday and Saturday, cops said.
Once inside, they took “a pure 18-karat gold tabernacle with jewels” that is believed to be from 1888 and worth about $2 million, cops said. The item was used to conduct the rites of sacrament of communion, police said. A statue of an angel also had its head callously removed, photos show.

Excuse the upcoming rant....but words mean things. "Pure 18K gold", is a stupid comment. By definition, 18K isn't pure gold. What they should have said, was that the tabernacle was made of jewel encrusted SOLID 18K gold. Pure 18K gold makes as much sense as calling a destroyer a battleship.
Our culture is seriously messed up. When I was kid, most churches didn't lock their doors, and church vandalism was a very rare occurrence. In my opinion, all places of current or prior worship are off limits. Synagogues, churches, temples, mosques etc. The buildings mean something to good people whether or not we agree with or approve of that religion.

Crime has been legalized in the NYC area. The criminals know that nothing will be done, so they go on rampages.

FTA: “To know that a burglar entered the most sacred space of our beautiful Church and took great pains to cut into a security system is a heinous act of disrespect,” said Father Frank Tumino, pastor of St. Augustine.
Fr Tumino doesn't get out much.

Trying to stop runaway italics. #2, that riled me also. Giving the reporter the benefit of the doubt, that might be why the "pure 18-karat gold" bit was set in quotation marks.

I, too, am outraged that the church was vandalized and desecrated; however, I never went to a church that had anything in the sanctuary worth stealing (maybe some appliances in the kitchen or class rooms.)
I know the arguments for and against decorating holy sites with treasures, but being practical, a good way to discourage the Vikings from pillaging your churches is not to have anything in there worth pillaging.
And our church didn't have anything worth stealing because it was poor, not for any moral reason.

A tabernacle is not a reliquary, it's a tabernacle. Every Catholic church has one and it contains the consecrated bread and wine which Catholics believe is the Body and Blood of Christ. A reliquary is a small item that contains something that is from a saint. A church where I go to, has a reliquary that contains a piece of a hat belonging to Saint Titus Brandsma, a new saint who stood up against the Nazis and was killed in Auschwitz.
Words have meaning and the person who wrote this story didn't do a very good job.

Now let’s see if this gets classified as what it is: a hate crime.

My question is how did this crime remain undetected from Thursday to Saturday? I would expect a priest, deacon, cleaning crew, someone would have checked on the Church. There are people in and out of our Church every day even if there isn't a scheduled Mass or service of some kind.

The heinous crime is not the stolen tabernacle, it is the stolen Eucharist - The Real Presence of Christ. His Presence is the Treasure of the Church. My great fear is the Hosts were stolen by Satanists to desecrate in their black mass. They cannot perform their "highest" ritual without a Consecrated Host.
There are many stories in Church history where thieves have stolen tabernacles for the gold and jewels with no sense of the Sacred hidden within the Hosts. The thieves have often had experiences that led them to return the stolen tabernacle within days. I pray this is the case and not that Our Lord's Presence is desecrated.
