— and won’t admit why

COVID-19 is waning, but shopping for a Louis Vuitton bag, a Chanel suit or a pair of Gucci loafers increasingly means standing in line outside a boutique—and luxury brands have been conspicuously tight-lipped on why. Most elite labels leaned into “appointment shopping” during the height of the pandemic, citing the need for social distancing. But as the threat from the virus recedes, some including Cartier and Harry Winston continue to impose the new policy.
They also have failed to convince shoppers and experts alike of their reasoning—if they bother to explain themselves at all. Major brands including Louis Vuitton, Chanel and Cartier didn’t respond

OP nails it. It’s to ensure their security can stop the smash and grab shoppers or limit the thefts to one thief per shopping group. Large groups of smash and grab can wipe out entire inventory in one attack. That’s it plain and simple.

What was said above. This us about trying to prevent gang stealing, not cash for goods shopping.

If I ran a store, I wouldn't let in customers wearing masks.

Right, sure…Covid. Can’t say the real reason…thieving blacks. Someone will now say it’s racism to stop blacks from taking any thing they want.

COVID's got nothing to do with this, The rampant smash-and-grab mobs allowed by feckless DA's and worthless "no-cash-bail" judges.

If one gets attacked every day by feral dogs, only a fool would wait to meet every feral dog before deciding if it was a threat or not.
Can you imagine the price markup to pay for all that extra security? I'd seriously consider closing up and leaving the state. They can't be making much money after those troglodytes.

Only those with limted brain power do not understand why appointment shopping is common amongst hi-end retailers. There may come a time when used Ukrainian tanks will be parked outside doors especially if local police channel the Uvalde department for strategic planning.

Have a properly trained & armed guard positioned where he can see everything.
Put up a sign saying armed personnel on site & that looters will be shot.
Now wait.

The shops don't have to explain themselves to some reporter or anyone else. You do have to be very stupid if you don't get it why they go by appointment only. Actually, this is a custom in many European shops as well, though they had a different reason decades ago.

This is a First World problem. But even here we don’t have to stand in line to shop at Marshall’s or Ross and they have dandy purses and clothing there.

Just maybe those luxury stores don’t want to lose their butts to shoplifters and just plain dark age looters?

There was an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm where Larry David rushed to a jewelry store in LA, to buy a particular item, he was disheveled and crazy, the door was locked at the store, and they would not buzz him in.
I recall about two decades ago, that the upscale shops on Rodeo Drive were kept locked.

How racist of them....after all, 'retail therapy' as practiced by obongo's "children" was one of the highlights of the 2020 summer season, and the poor darlings need to have a spring training of sorts at the high end major league level before returning to the stores in their luxury desert neighborhoods.

It isn’t just here and it isn’t just one minority. In 2018, long before covid, I was visiting Melbourne, Australia and took a stroll down that city’s equivalent of Fifth Avenue. Louis Vuitton, Chanel and several other high end shops were only allowing a few customers in at the time and there were lines down the street and around the corners of customers waiting their turn. And they were all Chinese.

In the early 80s, I worked in a big city. There was a high-end jewelry store down the street from my office. One day, a robber came and tried to rob the store, only to be shot by an armed clerk. He staggered around the corner into an alley and bled out before the police arrived. Within days, that store was locked and customers had to be buzzed in. I never had a problem getting in, but I saw the clerks wave off people several times. Usually the not well dressed, regardless of color.

These stores are fearful of smash 'n grab robbers. There is a subtext to this policy that is not discussed openly. I wonder what that might be?

Because this is America, they can't put up a sign announcing that only one bLACK person will be allowed into the store at a time, so the other wastrels will just have to stand there on line and stew.
