It's no secret that the average new car is awfully heavy. That's because the average new car is usually a crossover, SUV, or pickup truck, and as battery power becomes more prominent, that problem won't be remedied right away. This causes issues on more than a couple of fronts, namely pedestrian safety and infrastructure. Some Washington D.C. council members are looking for a way to mitigate large vehicles' impacts on both by proposing that anyone with a car or truck weighing over 6,000 pounds pay $500 annually. As Bloomberg reports, that's roughly seven times the normal registration fee for, say

And what exactly is the true purpose of this windfall? I would think a large portion of these "heavy" vehicles are registered outside of DC.

The trucking companies should refuse to pay and just keep their trucks out of DC. When everyday necessities run out the city leaders will quickly change their tune.

Excellent plan, and the truckers should all agree to not pay the levy and never enter the district again. No deliveries to grocery stores, drug stores, or any other commercial establishment. It could be like Mariupol.

Will this impact the federal fleet of hundreds, maybe 1000+, of dark colored Chevy Suburbans, some weighted down even more with armoring? The answer is NO.

A $500 once a year fee is a miniscule increase to the expense of operating a large truck. Since Biden's Green New Dea, the cost of each fill up of a large truck's fuel tanks has increased by $2,500.

hole on here. Congress passed Trillions of dollars of money for infrastructure. Now they have to punish large vehicle owners because the car is heavy. NO WAY. Want to know which car id the heaviest. the Electric one. I think Congress needs to give us an accounting of all the trillions of dollars they TOOK from taxpayers, as to just who got that money!

Whew, my 2016 Expedition is 5800 lbs. However, hubby's F350 is just over that. Yes I drive a larger vehicle because we live in the country where weather during the winter is unpredictable and I like the safety of having a larger vehicle and a true 4x4. Hubby has a truck to pull trailers, for work, etc.

That is easy. Heavy truck drivers, don't deliver to DC addresses. When they run out of food and drink maybe the geniuses will back off.

They are just trying to get the truck drivers to stop driving earlier than they will when they can't buy diesel. A pox on all their houses!! You know, when the extra $500 comes in to DC, they will just either pocket it or use it for illegals.

Do people who ride bicycles on the road pay any sort of fee or tax for that?
They may not much wear and tear, but think of the money spent on re-lining and re-designing, city planning to accomodate them and such-like things. Perhaps if you take it on the road - bikes, electric bikes, scooters, segways - you register it, have a license to prove you know the rules of the road, and you pay for fees and taxes, like other people who use the roads.
Or, who says there's no free ride?

What is the Law of Unintended Consequences?
Many decades ago, mall builders wanted to build a mall in a town near Rochester NY. The locals complained that the mall would bring too much traffic.
Sooo, the Eastview Mall was build in Victor NY. Another town and county get the tax revenue and the complaining town got the increased traffic.
