Switzerland has a stunningly high rate
of gun ownership — here's why it doesn't
have mass shootings

Switzerland hasn't had a mass shooting since 2001, when a man stormed the local parliament in Zug, killing 14 people and then himself. The country has about 2 million privately owned guns in a nation of 8.3 million people. In 2016, the country had 47 attempted homicides with firearms. The country's overall murder rate is near zero. The National Rifle Association often points to Switzerland to argue that more rules on gun ownership aren't necessary.

Comments:

The Swiss have strict rules for who can get a gun, and take firearm training very seriously.

Swiss authorities decide on a local level whether to give people gun permits. They also keep a log of everyone who owns a gun in their region, known as a canton, though hunting rifles and some semiautomatic long arms are exempt from the permit requirement. But cantonal police don't take their duty dolling out gun licenses lightly. They might consult a psychiatrist or talk with authorities in other cantons where a prospective gun buyer has lived before to vet the person. People who've been convicted of a crime or have an alcohol or drug addiction aren't allowed to buy guns in Switzerland. The law also states that anyone who "expresses a violent or dangerous attitude" won't be permitted to own a gun. Most important the focus is on the person, not the gun. Swiss laws are designed to prevent anyone who's violent or incompetent from having a gun.

The article starts with the LIE that "mass shooting about every day" in the USA. That is BS, not true. And Switzerland is perfectly set up to confiscate every single firearm, as soon as the elites decide it is time. Their registration has nothing to do with their crime rate. It is prmarily due to a fully integrated, culturally homogenious society. They don't have millions of trash people from third world hellholes without the slightest cultural or ethical limits on criminality being ASSISTED by their government to invade and destroy their country from within. NO gun registration in the USA.

Murder rate in the USA is 2.5 to 3 per 100,000 in the white and asian communities. It is currently 32 per 100,000 in the black community. IIRC, it is something like 16 per 100,000 in the hispanic community. How many urban black or hispanic gang bangers live in Switzerland? Zero? Maybe that is what is called a 'clue'.

I will bet that the government doesn't have a party that manipulates and incites racial elements for political power either. Also, don't pat the Swiss on the back too heartily. Their neutrality kept them out of wars partly because they weren't worth the trouble to go after at the time. Do you think that if the US stayed out of WWII and Hitler won the continent he would have left the Swiss independent? Peaceful coexistence is not possible with evil.

The Swiss don't mess around. Mandatory, National Guard like, service for 20 years and a real, full auto assault weapon in every house is kind of intimidating. Regarding their marksmanship, a Swiss general was asked during WWII what they would if Germany invaded and he simply said, "We'll shoot them. If they keep coming, we'll shoot twice". That's paraphrased. I'm looking for the exact quote.

A lot of these requirements make sense. And off-subject, how did an 18 year old kid, with no training, intimidate and keep a police force at bay for 40 minutes? I have no idea.

The primary reason for lack of mass shootings in Switzerland's may be the high percentage of firearm owners WHO KNOW HOW TO SHOOT THEM PROPERLY.

Re #12, that story is...when a German general was observing the annual Swiss military exercises, the Swiss general said "We have 250,000 infantry riflemen." The German general said, "And what would you do if you are ttacked by 500,000 men?" "Each man would shoot twice and go home." I have competed in trget shooting and militia qualification with the superb Swiss K-31 rifle and they could probably done it. The rifle is very accurate, and hte militia qualification is a serious challenge at 300 meters.

Democrats walked into a political ditch with their plan to let the Internal Revenue Service snoop on American banks accounts, and so far they’re doing a lousy job of scrambling to get out.(snip)The details are murky, but most Americans could still get ensnared in this dragnet unless they pay bills and buy goods in cash. Democrats say banks will only have to report total annual inflows and outflows, not discrete transactions. But nearly all Americans spend more than $10,000 a year. The real political goal here is to create a mechanism for triggering audits—probably through an algorithm—so the IRS can rifle through all of a taxpayer’s business and other financial records.
