Judy Garland's iconic blue-and-white gingham dress from the "Wizard of Oz" was expected to sell at auction before the sale was blocked by a U.S. district judge Monday after a Wisconsin woman filed a lawsuit claiming she was the rightful owner of the dress. The dress originally had a presale estimate of $800,000 to $1.2 million, set by auctioneer Bonhams. It was put up for sale in Los Angeles by the Catholic University of America as part of an auction specifically for Hollywood memorabilia. The dress had been rediscovered in a shoebox by a university lecturer and operations manager after having been assumed lost for decades,

Hartke will have a hard time proving her claim. Both the priest and actress McCambridge have been deceased for quite some time. There is apparently no documentation to back up her ownership of the dress.

The problem appears to be that, although actress Mercedes McCambridge gave the slippers to her relative Gilbert, the university contends that he was not permitted to accept gifts. MGM’s Culver City, CA, lots (I believe there were 6 at one time) were shut down and an incredible amount of film memorabilia was offered for sale. I have the catalogue somewhere as we visited and viewed many of he prominent items. There was at least one pair of red slippers (see very interesting article on those linked below. There were at least 6 pairs. I imagine there’d have been more than one dress as well. Studios operated their costuming that way. https://americanhistory.si.edu/press/fact-sheets/ruby-slippers

Correction to #3: McCambridge gave him the dress, not a pair of red shoes. (the hazards of multitasking)

SO, since the gift was erroneous, the dress must revert to the estate of Mercedes McCambridge.

The conflict between grotesquely dishonest Democrat politicians who claim to be “devout Catholics” to win what remains of the ethnic Catholic vote and the teachings of the Catholic Church (Roman, Orthodox, and all other permutations) may be coming to a head. One of the two major offenders on the national scene is House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. (snip) Tuesday, Pelosi talked to Morning Joe to explain her position. (snip) So this decision, taking us to privacy and precedent, is very dangerous in the lives of so many of the American people. And again, not consistent with the Gospel of Matthew.

GOP lawmakers in Indiana voted Tuesday to override a veto by Governor Eric Holcomb (R) and enact a law banning male athletes identifying as female from competing in girls’ sports. Indiana joins at least a dozen other U.S. states in enacting similar laws. (snip) Only minutes after the governor’s veto was overridden, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) filed a lawsuit on behalf of a 10-year-old boy who identifies as female and wants to play on an all-girls softball team. Most of a Florida law that sought to stop social media companies from restricting users’ political speech violates the companies’ free speech rights and cannot be enforced, a federal appeals court ruled on Monday, agreeing with a lower court. However, a three-judge panel of the 11th US Circuit Court of Appeals revived a part of the law requiring companies like Meta Platforms’ Facebook, Alphabet Google and Twitter to disclose the standards they use to moderate content on their platforms. The unanimous decision was authored by Circuit Judge Kevin Newsom, who was appointed by Republican former President Donald Trump.

Curtis Heide was the lead agent in the FBI’s Chicago field office back in 2016. Today he testified at Michael Sussmann’s trial and mentioned that he is currently under internal investigation by the FBI for possibly withholding exculpatory evidence in portions of the Crossfire Hurricane investigation. Heide said he was under investigation for “not identifying exculpatory information as it pertained to one of the Crossfire Hurricane investigations,” referring to the FBI codename for the early phases of the Trump-Russia probe, before special counsel Robert Mueller took over in 2017. He said he was specifically being investigated for potentially withholding material from the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, which oversees wiretaps against Americans.

As of May 23, at least 13 U.S. bishops have made public statements praising and thanking Archbishop Cordileone for the move, which was variously described as “courageous,” “heroic,” and “compassionate.” Lincoln Bishop James Conley, for instance, said he supports Archbishop Cordileone “in his courageous pastoral outreach to a member of his flock. His actions are made as a shepherd with the heart of Christ.”

Donald J. Trump was the best POTUS in my very long lifetime. His policies were effective, making America prosperous, energy independent, and lowering minority unemployment to record low levels. Everything he did, with the possible exception of the COVID lockdown, was quintessentially Trump; competent, encouraging, and salutary for America and her people. We were blessed to have him in the White House. Although many Americans cringed, we nonetheless put up with Trump’s coarseness and his inflated ego because he gave America back to the people.
