American households can now order up to eight more at home rapid COVID-19 tests free of charge, the White House announced Tuesday. Officials said they were expanding the offering of free, at-home, COVID-19 tests—which cost around $10 each—to help 'slow the spread of the virus'. The offer brings the total number of free tests offered to each American household to 16—with the latest offer double that from the first two rounds. President Joe Biden has committed to making a billion Covid tests available to the public free of charge, including 500 million through the United States Postal Service. But just 350 million have been

Comments:

It's not utterly wasteful spending at a time of raging inflation and looming fiscal collapse, it's an investment, with the usual cut going to the usual bipartisans. Has anyone even ordered these? Probably imaginary tests pretending to be sent to addresses of "registered voters."

I don’t believe that it is stated in the article exactly how an American household would go about ordering those tests, they only indicate that they are available by way of the Internet? Biden is certainly sending a lot of taxpayers money to China to purchase such home tests that may not be very reliable.

How good is the self-test? Seven out of eight of us at our Easter dinner tested positive for Covid; I self-tested negative three times. I finally went for a PCR test and was positive; 8/8. Basically all of us had symptoms that lasted a few days and were less than you’d get for a common cold.

Be careful with free tests, especially if they have to be mailed in. The government may decide if you test positive you need locked up for a few weeks.

What purpose is served by testing yourself for Covid? It's not like they treat it any differently if they know you have Covid than if they don't. And it's not even as if a negative result on one of these tests will substitute for providing proof of vaccination against Covid in those places which require proof of vaccination or a negative test in the last 72 hours.

What is the point of all this testing? I had to get tested before some surgery two weeks ago and I guess there might be a reason for doing so but why would you just randomly test yourself? It’s going to spread to everyone anyway and those tests are about as reliable as a Yugo automobile. Plus, who do you notify? Not our government. I don’t trust them with this information.

American families are shelling out what amounts to $5,000 per year to put gas in their cars—a painful increase from $2,800 just a year ago, according to a new report. The new study by Yardeni Research shows the ever-increasing financial burden borne by US households in recent months as the price of fuel has reached record levels. In March, the annual rate of gasoline spending by US households was at $3,800, according to the study. “No wonder that the Consumer Sentiment Index is so depressed. The wonder is that retail sales have been so surprisingly strong during April and May,” Yardeni said in a note.

President Biden on Wednesday committed to working with Finland and Sweden to “remain vigilant against any threats to our shared security” and “deter and confront aggression” while the two Nordic countries’ applications to join the NATO military alliance are under review. Analysts say the two countries, which have long resisted formal ties to NATO, are in a particularly vulnerable position as their applications for alliance membership are in the pipeline. Russian President Vladimir Putin has bitterly criticized past expansions by NATO into eastern Europe and has talked of unspecified retaliation against Helsinki and Stockholm for their decision to join the 30-nation transatlantic alliance.
