M Health Fairview is tapping into the magic of reading. Families with babies in the NICU are now provided books to share with their infant. “It has definitely helped me create a bond with her,” said Roidely Garcia Sanchez, whose daughter has been in the hospital since she was born at just 22 weeks old in January. “I think it relaxes her for sure.” She told us she reads to her daughter daily, in the morning and at bedtime, in both English and Spanish.

Comments:

There is so much wrong with this article that I don't even know where to start. Then, again, there was so much wrong with my beloved MinneZOHta that I didn't know where to start, either. So I left. The entire concept of "reaching out" to promote, what... LITERATE INFANTS (???) is ludicrous. Are we supposed to believe that, without this program, the mothers wouldn't know enough to speak to their babies? Is that assuming that some MSP communities such as Edina, Wayzata, or North Oaks may provide more infant-suitable environments than others? Parents need a non-profit to teach them how to "share their voice" with their newborn? Egads. Would this article even be written if the Mother/Reader's name was Amy Smith? And, by the way, Dr Buckley is a neonatology FELLOW. Wouldn't she be better served by refusing the fellowship and instead focusing her time and energy on finding a more gender-neutral word for her job?

Reading, in both English and Spanish, (of course) is harmful. Don't confuse the kid with the useless language of Spanish. We speak English here. Stick with the correct language. And those 22 week olds don't understand anything. Singing a lulaby is fine, too. Mother's voice, yes. "Reading" is not useful at that age. Just speaking or singing. In English.

Being a strong proponent of reading, I’d like to suggest at least a side benefit of this program…. I bet it never occurred to many to pick up a book in the first place.

Ah...books. I'm at my favorite German restaurant right now. Pork shank, mustard, potato salad, saurkraut, liter of Warsteiner. Out on the patio. Two years ago, I'd also be reading a book. Now? I just look at my phone like everyone else.

Wednesday, MDHR Commissioner Rebecca Lucero sent a letter identifying those steps to Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey. Minnesota could become a destination for abortion services for women from other states if the U.S. Supreme Court throws out the landmark Roe v. Wade decision, and the state's abortion providers said Tuesday that they're preparing for the anticipated surge. That's because abortion would remain legal, at least for now, under a 1995 Minnesota Supreme Court ruling known as Doe v. Gomez, which effectively established a right to abortion under the state constitution, said Laura Hermer, a professor at the Mitchell Hamline School of Law.
