Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen on Tuesday warned that eliminating abortion rights would damage the U.S. economy and 'set women back decades.' 'I believe that eliminating the right of women to make decisions about when and whether to have children would have very damaging effects on the economy and would set women back decades,' she said at a Senate Banking Committee hearing. Yellen was asked about the draft Supreme Court opinion that indicated justices support overturning Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 case that legalized abortion, and the effect such a decision would have on the economy. 'It enabled many women to finish school that increase their earning potential and allowed

And here I thought the purpose of the Treasury Department was to work hand in hand with the Federal Reserve to grind the middle class between the millstones of taxation and inflation.

No one is 'eliminating' abortion rights. That authority belongs to the people of various sovereign states. The Federal Government simply has no jurisdiction under its enumerated powers. This decision is returning the authority where it belongs. Those with responsible national level positions should be careful in their choice of words. Especially the POTUS.

The Senate on Thursday confirmed Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powell to a second four-year term, as the former investment banker leads the central bank in tightening monetary policy to fight 40-year high inflation. The bipartisan 80-19 vote included opposition from mostly Republicans, but also from Democrat Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Bob Menendez. Menendez claimed Powell had not done enough to promote diversity at the Fed. While Powell led the Federal Reserve through a heavier focus on maximum employment with a higher tolerance for inflation through much of the pandemic, his agenda has now reversed course. The Fed has a dual mandate—maintaining full employment and keeping inflation around

President Biden admitted Wednesday that inflation was stuck at “unacceptably high” levels after the annual rate fell slightly in April to 8.3%—but then blamed the COVID-19 pandemic and Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine for the price increases rather than government spending. “While it is heartening to see that annual inflation moderated in April, the fact remains that inflation is unacceptably high,” Biden said in a statement. Inflation hit a 40-year annual high of 8.5% in March. Although the annual inflation rate ticked lower in April, prices actually increased 0.3% on a month-to-month basis. As you can imagine, every single Republican voted against this and they were joined by none other than West Virginia Democrat Joe Manchin who had indicated that he’d vote against it earlier in the day.
