Rep. Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez slammed the Supreme Court on Thursday as 'imperialist' after it ruled that Puerto Ricans were not entitled to the same access to benefits as other Americans. The court voted 8-1 that Congress had the power to exclude them from a benefits program that's available in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.
The verdict provoked outrage in Puerto Rico and disbelief among campaigners.Ocasio-Cortez, whose father's family came from the island, made her anger clear.

They had their chance to become a state but voted it down. Why should Americans pay the way for people who dislike the US? Also, how did somebody who hates the US so much get elected to Congress?

Puerto Rico, essentially a third-world country propped up by the US, should have been given independence and shown the door long ago. Its only export of note has been street gangs and ungrateful refugees like AOC.

Kind of amazed that the liberals did not vote in lockstep.
The USA is not the ATM machine of the world.

Perhaps the fact that Aside from most of the PR folks being able to avoid income tax, other U.S. federal taxes they do not participate in includes customs taxes, federal commodity taxes, and federal payroll taxes (Social Security, Medicare, and Unemployment taxes). Perhaps that was a consideration in this court ruling.
A large number of Puerto Rican activists, supported by Jesse Jackson, Robert Kennedy Jr., Al Sharpton, US Representative Luis Gutiérrez D-IL, US Representative Nydia Velázquez D-NY, led to the closure of the U S Naval targeting island of Vieques. Without that facility, the US Navy decided to close their Roosevelt Roads Naval Base in 2004--a major employer of civilian workers around that part of Puerto Rico.
So, the US really doesn't need Puerto Rico at all, and the majority of people on that island have accepted the premise that "why but the cow if you get the milk for free?"

People in Puerto Rico do not pay federal income tax. They are required to pay FICA (SS & Medicare) payroll taxes. This ruling will potentially effect a benefit that people have paid taxes for. While not Imperialist, it is confusing to those who paid their FICA tax.

The specific issue at hand was whether the plaintiff was eligible for eligible to receive disability. He had been receiving disability payments until he moved back to PR and then sued to restore payments. While I am surprised that the Supremes voted to uphold the law, I am equally surprised that any citizen who is taxed for Social Security is not eligible for SS disability because of where they live.

I'm waiting for Geraldo to weigh in before I comment. If not for the generosity of the US, Puerto Rico would be nothing but a bigger version of Haiti. The only thing Puerto Ricans have ever done for me was to steal two motorcycles from downtown San Juan and break into my car at the beach, so screw 'em. These people need to learn that blacks are the only people in America who deserve everything for nothing but retain the ability to badmouth their benefactors.

Funny, the tax law exemptions help bring money to PR, but then they don’t pay into the system.
But AoC wants the benefits without paying. Sounds consistent with her grifter mentality.

#9 - Supplemental Security Income is funded by general taxes, not FICA taxes. It has nothing to do with Social Security, but since it sort of sounds like it the waitress figures she can make political gain by throwing it out there as such. The other surprise here is that the administration was on the right side of this one.

#9, SSI is a pure welfare benefit, and has nothing to do with Social Security. funds The Social Security Administration manages SSI, which is funded out of the federal budget.
The Social Security Administration is not really set up to manage SSI. But they were available when the program was voted in during the Nixon years. The original purpose of SSI was to cover severely disabled workers who did not have 10 years of Social Security participation, and like many government programs, was expanded to cover new born babies, for heaven's sake! Courts have ruled that the program even covers children who have behavioral problems in school! And the money goes to a designated payee, usually Mom, and she can stack the benefit checks by having each of her offspring misbehave in school. (Alcoholics are also eligible for SSI, and sometimes designate their bartender as alternate payee.)
If you watch a week or two of Judge Judy, you will see her fume over one or two SSI cases, usually with baby momma and baby daddy fighting over the SSI check.

Puerto Ricans, living on the Island, do not pay Federal taxes yet get Food Stamps and Medicaid compliments of tax-paying Continental citizens. AKA Americans living in the 50 states, Hawaii and some of our territories. She needs to shut up and give some money to her Abuelita to fix her roof.

Cut PR loose. NO MORE US money to PR. Let them take care of themselves. From what I've seen by working there for several years, only about 20% are worth saving. The majority are pretty useless, like this communist barmaid.

Older immigrants and illegal aliens who claim they can no longer work get on SSI. Most of them come to the USA to stay with or near their adult immigrant children who may be in the USA illegally or legally.
