The National Endowment for the Humanities has awarded a $6,000 grant to Oberlin College, according to an announcement from Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Cleveland. The money will be used to support students in advanced research that results in publication.(Snip) “Ohio’s great museums and universities play an important role in our understanding of the world, and were hit particularly hard during the COVID-19 pandemic,” Brown said. “These funds will allow Ohio cultural and educational institutions to continue supporting their workers while providing a vital service to local communities for generations to come.”

Comments:

An Ohio Court of Appeals recently supported a jury decision in favor of Gibson’s Bakery in its libel case against Oberlin College and “must now pay $33 million in punitive damages and $11 million in compensatory damages to Gibson’s Bakery.” Oberlin College’s “total endowed funds as of June 30, 2020 were $937.0 million, as compared to $925.0 million the previous year, an increase of $12.0 million.” Professor William A. Jacobson of Legal Insurrection, who is to be commended for his impeccable coverage of this litigation, wrote he would be shocked if Oberlin College does not attempt to take this litigation to the Ohio Supreme Court.

#2~ There are two points for posting this news story: 1) Oberlin College has endowed funds of $937.0 million as of June 30, 2020 so is not in “need” of a government/taxpayer award; 2) Oberlin College has endowed funds of $937.0 million, but has resisted paying $33 million in punitive and $11 million in compensatory damages awarded to the Gibson family.

The good news now is the unanimous decision of a panel of three judges on an Ohio Court of Appeals, supporting a jury decision in favor of Gibson's Bakery in its case against Oberlin College.(Snip)The decision is worthy of our attention because it shows just how troubling the situation is at our colleges and universities.(Snip)The nation is indebted to the Gibson family for refusing to be intimidated by left-wing dogmatists at Oberlin and for standing hard and fast for what is true.
Portman gets it wrong on Jackson nomination 4 replies

Rob Portman has gotten good at finding reasons why only Republican presidents should be able to appoint justices to the U.S. Supreme Court. Portman, Ohio’s junior U.S. senator, did it in 2016 following the death that February of Justice Antonin Scalia. Portman joined his fellow Republicans in insisting that the seat shouldn’t be filled during an election year. Thus now-Attorney General Merrick Garland was denied even a hearing on his nomination to the high court by Democratic President Barack Obama. Instead, we’re stuck with Justice Neil Gorsuch, an appointee of Republican President Donald Trump.

ROME, Italy — Pope Francis accused the West of racism Friday, insisting migrants are “subdivided” by skin color and country of origin.“Refugees are subdivided,” the pontiff declared during a lengthy Good Friday interview on Italian television. “There’s first class, second class, skin color, [whether] they come from a developed country [or] one that is not developed.”“We are racists, we are racists. Author Shalom Auslander, who is disillusioned about his upbringing in a religious Jewish community in New York, argues (original emphasis): God, it seems, paints with a wide brush. He paints with a roller. In Egypt, said our rabbi, he even killed first-born cattle.

If the facts are as claimed, the sinking is the most significant warship loss in decades, and possibly since the Second World War. Russian state media has confirmed the guided-missile cruiser and erstwhile flagship of the Black Sea Fleet, the Moskva (Moscow) sunk on Thursday. The total loss of the ship comes after what Ukrainian state media claimed was a strike on the ship by two of their domestically produced  “Neptune” (Нептун) missiles on Wednesday. The Ukrainians said they’d caused major damage to the warship.
