One of the men who opened fire on a crowd of people in Sacramento early Sunday morning, killing six, was a career criminal who was released from prison in February just four years into a 10-year sentence for felony gun and robbery convictions, reports said.
The decision, made by California's Department of Corrections, was even made over the strenuous objections of the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office, which submitted a letter saying that the man 'displayed a pattern of criminal behavior' and posed a 'significant' danger to the community. Smiley Martin, 27, was arrested on Tuesday morning, and remains in a local hospital where he was recovering

The Irish poet W.B. Yeats wrote of sailing to an imagined Byzantium because his was “no country for old men.” The pandemic has proven that the United States is no country for the young. A new Centers for Disease Control study reveals how badly teens have suffered from COVID policies—that the CDC itself pushed.(Snip)Now we learn that the isolation and anxiety that accompanied school shutdowns have taken a heavy toll on adolescents. The CDC found that more than a third of US high-school students reported poor mental health during the pandemic. Nearly half—44%—said they felt sad or hopeless. A horrifying near-20% said

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin accused Rep. Matt Gaetz of being “embarrassed by your country” at a House hearing Tuesday, while the outspoken Florida Republican shot back that Mr. Austin and other Pentagon leaders have compromised U.S. military superiority by embracing socialist policies. A heated exchange between the two men erupted during Tuesday’s hearing before the House Armed Services Committee, which was meant to be a forum to discuss the Pentagon’s fiscal year 2023 budget request. But the third-term conservative lawmaker used his time to accuse the Defense Department of inviting socialists to speak at military institutions and forcing recruits to learn critical race theory.

A crew of thieves armed with a sledgehammer smashed a Bronx jewelry store display window and swiped $50,000 in baubles during a brazen afternoon heist caught on camera, police said Tuesday. The suspects, all described as men between 20 and 30, drove Westchester and Morrison Aves. in Soundview about 3:45 p.m. on Sunday and parked around the corner from the M&N Gold jewelry store. Surveillance footage from outside the store shows two of the suspects, all dressed in black with black masks, walk by the store. A few moments later, a masked man in a green hoodie carrying a sledgehammer and another suspect walk up to the store.

It’s illegal to discriminate based on race, even in the name of increasing diversity, which is why the NFL’s newly announced mandate on women and minority coaches is already raising red flags. The league announced last week at the annual owners meeting that all 32 teams must employ a woman or person of color as an offensive assistant coach, an effort to put diverse candidates in the pipeline for future head coaching positions. Whether the hiring initiative can pass legal muster is another question, given that it looks at first glance like a “pretty clear racial and gender quota,” said Josh Blackman, South Texas College of Law Houston professor.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is the latest indication that the world is rapidly becoming more unstable, top Pentagon leaders said Tuesday, as they warned that the prospects of major conflict between the U.S. and other great powers such as China and Russia are increasing. In testimony before a House panel, Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Mark A. Milley said that he believes Russia’s unprovoked attack on its neighbor Ukraine isn’t an isolated event. He offered a grim warning about the future of a democratic world order that is now facing its greatest threat in decades. “Currently, we are supporting our European allies and guarding NATO’s eastern flank

A talk show host claims she was fired from a Washington D.C. radio station for making fun of the outfit worn by Vice President Kamala Harris during last month's State of the Union speech. She also works for conservative magazine The Spectator, where she recounted the incident in full. Amber Athey, a conservative host who worked on a morning show at news station WMAL, wrote a joking tweet about the color of the suit Harris was wearing. 'Kamala looks like a UPS employee—what can brown do for you? Nothing good, apparently,' Athey wrote in the March 1 tweet, referring to an old UPS tagline.

Hundreds of Ukrainian refugees who fled to Mexico are sitting in a makeshift refuge at a Tijuana sports center as they wait to enter the United States, authorities said today. The facility was converted into a government shelter after some 400 Ukrainians—about 30 per cent of whom are children—arrived to the northern Mexican city over the weekend. Images show those who have fled the devastating scenes in Ukraine sleeping on the floor and waiting with their belonging—including arrays of food supplies, blankets and children's toys—strewn around tents and sleeping mats. As President Joe Biden two weeks ago promised that the U.S. will accept up 100,000 refugees

Amazon employees could be banned from writing words including 'union' and 'pay rise' on the company's planned internal messaging app to avoid 'negative sentiment'. The new app, which is in the planning stages, would block 42 words and phrases including those that could be used to criticize Amazon's working conditions, such as 'plantation', 'prison' and 'slave labor', according to The Intercept. Employees posting other keywords including 'ethics', 'unfair', 'vaccine', 'master', 'freedom' and 'injustice' could also see their posts on the messaging app blocked and flagged to management.(Snip)'Our teams are always thinking about new ways to help employees engage with each other,' Amazon spokesperson Barbara Agrait told the news site.

Palm Springs is to spend $200,000 on a guaranteed income scheme that only applies to the city's transgender and nonbinary residents.
The Californian city's council voted unanimously on Thursday in favor of the pilot scheme, which will give 20 residents between $600 and $900 a month for two years. Council Member Christy Holstege, who backed the scheme, told The Los Angeles Times that she felt 'incredibly proud' of the city for coming down on 'the right side of history and supporting our trans and nonbinary, gender-nonconforming community.'(Snip)'The bureaucracies that we've set up to fund poverty programs and to staff them are probably much more expensive than giving

An MSNBC host over the weekend said white Americans should “sit this out” as controversy persists around Will Smith slapping stand-up comic Chris Rock during the Academy Awards last week. Tiffany Cross, who anchors a weekend talk show on the left-leaning cable news network, interviewed actress Yvette Nicole Brown and TheGrio columnist Michael Harriot on Sunday. Harriot claimed the Smith-Rock incident was an example of “how black people relate to each other” in a way that white people do not understand, “even though it happened to everybody [watching the ceremony].”(Snip)“Some people use their words, some people use their hands. It is what it is.
Comments:
This might be the most gloriously American article we'll see today. We create "jobs" wherein working Americans who struggle to keep food on their own tables will deliver free food to people on welfare, who in turn pay no taxes at all. How cool is that? And as long as corporations are making money on it, this is laudable. Before anyone complains, remember that the GOP is the biggest proponent of The Farm Bill, which includes food stamps, and which benefits their key campaign contributors Walmart, the junk food industry, etc.
