Detroit—New vehicles sold in the U.S. will have to average at least 40 miles per gallon of gasoline in 2026, up from about 28 mpg, under new federal rules unveiled Friday that undo a rollback of standards enacted under President Donald Trump. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said its new fuel economy requirements are the strongest to date and the maximum the industry can achieve over the time period. They will reduce gasoline consumption by more than 220 billion gallons over the life of vehicles, compared with the Trump standards. They're expected to decrease carbon dioxide emissions—but not as much as some environmentalists want—and raise new vehicle prices

NHTSA is supposed to regulate for highway safety, not for trying to prevent global warming. The auto makers should sue but they are sheep and probably won't. Biden is such a disaster in every way.

If not rescinded by Trump or DeSantis, ruling will make our roads look like Cuba’s. We will keep our current SUVs and pickups running to avoid buying micro cars and mini trucks.

I have long been confused by averaging MPG for fleets. Introduce just one purely electric car and a zero appears in the denominator. The entire fleet average mileage becomes undefined. Did I do that right?

I can't believe this is constitutional in any way, shape, or form. This must be challenged by someone or some corporation or group. I don't know who has to do it, but it must be done, and all the way to the Supreme Court. (We may be in trouble there, because the latest nominee can't define a woman.) This is an unelected body assuming lawmaking powers. The Founders would never have envisioned this situation, but it is the norm in our so-called "government" now. God help us take back our government. Pull these quasi-legislative departments, bureaus, and other collections of progressive power-grabbers to heel. California had outlawed any gas powered outdoor equipment starting in '24 - even generators. How many lithium batteries will it take to mow acreage with a battery operated mower? Just remember to separate them from your trash when they become useless.

This is not a law. This is a regulation.
This was not passed by Congress it wasn't signed by the President, it isn't a law.
Laws are not the biggest problem in this country.
It is regulations thought up by some whiz kid who stopped beating off in his closet and decided to screw the whole country with a dipstick regulation.

Well that means my 2016 Expedition will never go down in price at this rate. I don't drive cracker box cars as they are totally unsafe. Hubby drives an F350 that we need for pulling trailers etc. Both are worth 50% more than we paid for them.

Fuel efficiency standards are why there are very few cars being manufactured. At least in the US. Most vehicles manufactured these days are SUV's or a hybrid.
My mother has a 2012 Ford Fiesta that gets 40 miles per gallon. Its small, uncomfortable and I dont recommend it for long haul drives.
In truth, this is the government's attempt to phase out the internal combustion engine. But I don't see or hear the screaming greenies demanding that coal powered cars get a comparable range on a full charge.

My last Honda Civic easily achieved 40 mpg and won safety awards on top of that. It's not hard to drive an efficient small car but it is inconvenient. When you need to haul something big, rent a van for $19.95 a day. Detroit is too busy focusing on EVs to make better cars right now but the technology is available.

Don't worry. It will also deal with the speeding problem. The transmissions will have so many computer managed gears that between the chips and the mechanics it will be in the shop more often than a Lotus.
Be prepared to walk to work, and discover the joys of electric. If you live in the northern states, the winter temperatures will easily cut your travel range in half. Accidents with hybrid and electric vehicles are also fun, because they have to call out a hazmat team for any serious accident, and that's NOT covered by insurance.

That said, a true measurement of efficiency would be the amount of energy it would take to produce the electric power to charge EV batteries to achieve the same number of miles driven with a full tank in a gasoline powered car (approximately 600-700) with a sub-measurement of the amount of pollution produced. Spoiler alert, the EV loses by a lot. I can't wait to see the mess that Californians will be in when the highways are deadlocked during rush hour when people are trying to run lawn mowers and air conditioners on available power. Their grid suffers brownouts and shutdowns now. It won't be pretty but Gruesome will be long gone.

That means that each car maker will be required to sell lots of little aluminum cars for each SUV, truck or other adult sized vehicle that people actually want to drive. If you now own an SUV or truck, hold onto it. You will soon be able to sell it for more than you paid for it new, even if it is now over 10 years old and has over 100,000 miles on it.

WHERE in my copy of the U.S. Constitution does the right to dictate energy efficiencies fall to a bunch of elected clowns, most of them lawyers, who know NOTHING of Engineering, let alone basic Science (and no, biology, anthropology, and politics do NOT count as a "science"). The Internal Combustion Engine is almost an "ideal" converter of liquid potential energy into kinetic energy. I wish someone would chart the advances in emissions since the 1970's that car manufacturers have made in reductions, along with increases in fuel economy and horsepower! It is truly mind boggling to see what strides Engineers have made, and yet, here are the Club Sierra crowd, and Tree-Huggers Anonymous all seeking to destroy the Industrial Revolution and return to their Luddite roots.

To make the AVERAGE they will need to sell many more hybrid cars which "claim" to have 50+ MPG. (Though in reality they don't. But nothing like lying to meet a government spec.) That will mean they will need to limit sales of lower mileage cars which will mean a shortage. So keep your older cars and rebuild rebuild rebuild. They will probably exempt trucks so that means they will be selling more trucks to people who don't really need a truck but they need something other than a tiny hybrid. Don't forget the reason we drive so many SUVs is because they outlawed the station wagon.

Answer: No. "Average MPG" is a misnomer. First calculate "Average GPM" and then take the reciprocal. Thw requirement is actually that Average GPM be less than 1/40.

This was in the works since 2020. The Trump administration did an exhaustive review of the EPA CAFE proposal dropped at he last minute by the previous administration that called for 60+ MPG with no real explanation of how that could be done or how it would be measured. The CAFE standards in the Trump law go into great detail about every class of vehicle and how a yearly 1.5% increase in efficiency could be set. The law is 1872 pages long and points out where the previous CAFE standards were confusing or not in place. A lot of data comparing cost to benefit. I have no idea what changes the Biden administration made to the Trump standards, aside from moving the date up 4 years. BTW, in the Trump CAFE law, trucks were expected to average 34.1 MPG by 2030.
