Computers and other devices that amount to at least 8% of the Chicago Public Schools’ “technology assets” have been listed as “lost” during the coronavirus pandemic.
Among the missing items: Tens of thousands of computers, iPads and other high-tech devices. They were lent to students during remote learning but weren’t returned. (Snip) Air purifiers, defibrillators, a treadmill, lawn equipment and other property also vanished from schools since the beginning of the pandemic.
The Sun-Times reviewed police reports listing lost items for 15 public schools in Chicago. The cost of the missing items in those schools was estimated at more than $920,000.
And that doesn’t include hundreds of computers whose values

It’s official: 2021 was the most lucrative year ever for Wall Street financiers, according to data released Wednesday by New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli.
The average bonus last year for those working in the New York City securities industry was $257,500 — that’s 20% more than 2020’s average bonus, the previous record high. Last year’s bonus pool of $45 billion, also a record, was 21% higher than 2020’s bonus bool of $37.1 billion.
DiNapoli noted the massive surge in bonuses are “historically unique” given the nation was reeling from the coronavirus pandemic and resulting lockdowns.

London/Lviv, Ukraine - The props were simple, the message was clear. In a video address to the nation this week, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy held up his smartphone to the camera and started a timer app while an air raid siren blared. (Snip) Ever since he ran for president as a political outsider in 2019, Zelenskiy has used social media and videos to get through to voters using plain language. Upon entering office, he took with him people from the TV and media world as officials and advisers. One of those close to him declined to comment when Reuters asked about his communications strategy.

Jamaica is ready to move towards removing the Queen as head of state and becoming a republic as soon as Prince William and Kate complete their Caribbean tour, according to reports.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were accused of benefitting from the 'blood, tears and sweat' of slaves as they arrived in Jamaica on Tuesday to be met by a protest calling for reparations from the British monarchy.
And the Advocates Network coalition of Jamaican politicians, business leaders, doctors and musicians wrote an open letter detailing 60 reasons why the monarchy should compensate the country.
It is now understood that Jamaica's decoupling has been discussed at the 'highest levels' in government

Indianapolis — Indiana’s governor on Monday vetoed a bill banning transgender females from participating in girls school sports. Opponents of the transgender sports bill argued it was a bigoted response to a problem that doesn’t exist, with the American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana saying it planned a lawsuit against what it called “hateful legislation.” Republican sponsors of the bill said it was needed to protect the integrity of female sports and opportunities for girls to gain college athletic scholarship CORRECTION*

Kamala Harris repeated four times in the matter of less than 30 seconds the 'significance of the passage of time' during remarks after an event in Louisiana Monday on providing high-speed Internet to smaller towns in America.
In what appeared to be an off-script opening to her speech, the vice president said: 'The Governor and I and we were all doing a tour of the library here and talking about the significance of the passage of time. Right?'
'The significance of the passage of time,' she repeated.
'So, when you think about it, there is great significance to the passage of time in terms

When photos began to circulate online of Russian cosmonauts boarding the International Space Station (ISS), media outlets online quickly spread the hoax that the group had deliberately chosen to wear yellow and blue flight suits in solidarity with Ukraine by wearing the country's national colors. The connection between the color of the attire and the conflict in Ukraine spread to outlets like the BBC, Bloomberg Quicktake, The Times, and NPR. (Snip) Veteran cosmonaut Oleg Artemyev, the mission commander for the Russian team aboard the ISS, quickly debunked the story, Reuters reported. CORRECTION*

In a sign of the times, a fed-up Queens landlord posted two giant banners calling out his allegedly deadbeat tenants for owing him $17,000 in back rent.
“MY TENANTS ON THE FIRST FLOOR ARE NOT PAYING RENT” read the bold posters slung above the first-floor rental on 175th Street in Springfield Gardens.
Landlords Calvin and Jean Thompson posted the banners — which can be seen from the Belt Parkway — in the hopes of shaming their tenants into paying up.(Snip)But with nearly 200,000 eviction cases pending in the city after pandemic protections and the state’s eviction moratorium created a historic backlog, the landlords see humiliation as the next best tactic.

When Vladimir Putin shattered the peace in Europe by unleashing war on a democracy of 44 million people, his justification was that modern, Western-leaning Ukraine was a constant threat and Russia could not feel "safe, develop and exist".
But after weeks of bombardment, thousands of deaths and an exodus of millions of refugees, the question remains: what is his war aim and is there a way out? The goals he set at the start of Russia's invasion appear to have been watered down (Snip) Russia does appear to have accepted it cannot depose Ukraine's leadership and replace it with a puppet government, as exists in Belarus.

Former West Point cadet Chris Monge was thrown out of school and into military prison for dealing and using cocaine, Xanax and opiates at the country’s foremost military academy in 2017.
Army prosecutors called him a drug “kingpin” at the US Military Academy in Orange County, NY. (Snip) West Point cadets are technically active-duty Army cadets and subject to being criminally charged, according to the UCMJ, or Uniform Code of Military Justice. They could also face a separate administrative action.

As Russia's brutal invasion of Ukraine grinds on into its fourth week, the physical war rages in the cities and countryside, while an information war is waged over the airwaves and on the internet and social media.
On the actual battlefield, the Russian offensive has undoubtedly slowed over the past week. But what is being described as a 'stalled' takeover may be the result of the Russians taking time to reorganize their forces and improve their logistics.(Snip)Ukraine certainly has won the war on social media and in the press. This gives the average Western viewer the impression of a lopsided victory in favor of Ukraine.
Additionally, the Pentagon has taken the unprecedented

Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s strict COVID-19 response over the past two years drew considerable resistance from the public at times, but he found a behind-the-scenes ally in Cardinal Blase Cupich, text messages between the two leaders show.
Pritzker and Cupich were in frequent contact, according to newly obtained records that show they texted and emailed each other repeatedly from early 2020 into this year.(Snip) Cupich’s good relationship with Pritzker — as well as with other powerful Democratic politicians in Illinois — stands in contrast to how his predecessor, the late Cardinal Francis George, interacted with politicians.
