The NY Times editorial board published a lengthy piece today titled “America Has a Free Speech Problem.” There’s a lot of both-sidesing of the issue here as you might expect but we’ll come back to that in a moment. First here’s how the piece opens. For all the tolerance and enlightenment that modern society claims, Americans are losing hold of a fundamental right as citizens of a free country: the right to speak their minds and voice their opinions in public without fear of being shamed or shunned. This social silencing, this depluralizing of America, has been evident for years, but dealing with it stirs yet more fear.

U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy urged calm on Sunday as a Covid-19 wave fueled at least partially by a new sub variant of the virus spread across Europe, adding that the pandemic should “not define our lives.”
During an appearance on Fox News Sunday with Trace Gallagher, Murthy said the country needs to exercise caution with the new spike in Europe but shouldn’t live in fear because of all of the tools at our disposal to combat the disease.
“We should be prepared that Covid hasn’t gone away. There may be rises and falls in the months ahead, but here’s the key:
Inflation continues to slam the American people in ways not seen in over 40 years following the Jimmy Carter administration. The February number clocked in at 7.9 percent, and there are no signs things are going to slow down. Will we soon be at 10 percent inflation? That’s not a bad bet, at this point.
That reality has left poor and middle-class Americans scrambling as they have had to essentially absorb a massive pay reduction due to the increased costs of goods and services. Of course, gas prices are also nearly double what they were when Joe Biden took office.
So, how is our intrepid media handling that?
On Friday’s broadcast of the Fox Business Network’s “Evening Edit,” Texas Department of Public Safety Lt. Christopher Olivarez said that “we thought last year was complete chaos” on the border, but “this year’s going to be catastrophic.” And that “we have the most unsecured border that we have seen in decades.”
Olivarez said, “[A]t this time, right now, we have the most unsecured border that we have seen in decades. … Last year, for fiscal year 2021, between the months of February through October, there were over 397,000 encounters. Now this year alone, fiscal year 2022, same timeframe, five months, from October through February, over 837,000 encounters.
The news keeps getting worse for Democrats as their midterm prospects continue to dim.
The Republican Party is united, excited, and out for blood. Democrats are in disarray — ambivalent about their party leader, unable to find a winning issue, and anticipating defeat.
The Rassmussen generic congressional ballot of Republicans versus Democrats for the midterm election shows Republicans winning 50-39 percent. The February Rassmussen generic congressional ballot had the GOP up 50-37 percent.
The two-point bump in support of Democrats is insignificant when you consider that the GOP is winning in most age groups and most income groups. And the GOP is clobbering the Democrats among independent voters.
U.S. health officials are watching the climb in COVID case numbers in the U.K. with concern. Daily case counts there have more than doubled, and hospitalizations are on the upswing.
"Over the last year or so, what happens in the U.K. usually happens here a few weeks later," Dr. Anthony Fauci, the President's chief medical advisor said in an interview with NPR. "And right now, the U.K. is seeing somewhat of a rebound in cases."
Officials in the U.K. attribute the increase to the quick-spreading BA.2 omicron subvariant, the widespread removal of COVID restrictions, and to waning immunity from vaccinations and infections.
Russia has deployed a hypersonic missile in its attacks on Ukraine, its defense ministry said — the first time the powerful weapon has been used in combat. Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov said the high-tech Kinzhal, carried by MiG-31 fighter jets, destroyed a large underground warehouse for missiles and aircraft ammunition in the village of Delyatyn, near the western Ivano-Frankivs region of Ukraine, according to multiple reports.
A Ukrainian military official confirmed to a local news outlet that Russian missiles hit the warehouse Friday.

You’ve probably heard that the column of Russian tanks heading for Kyiv was stalled for a while and then broke up. University of Pennsylvania swimmer Lia Thomas made history Thursday as the first openly transgender person to win a Division I national championship.
Thomas, a senior on the women's swim team, finished the 500-yard freestyle at the front of the pack in 4 minutes, 33.24 seconds at the McAuley Aquatic Center in Atlanta. "It means the world to be here," Thomas said in an interview after the win. Thomas competed against University of Virginia freshman Emma Weyant, University of Texas freshman Erica Sullivan, and Stanford University senior Brooke Forde. Thomas ended up finishing 1.75 seconds ahead of second-place Weyant.
Earlier this month a group of student protesters shut down a scheduled speech at UC Hastings College of Law in San Francisco by Ilya Shapiro. After about 30 minutes of rude interruptions, Shapiro gave up and the even was canceled. The school sent out a notice reminding students that shouting down speakers violated the school’s code of conduct but no one was ever punished for those violations. Last week there was a similar attempt to use the heckler’s veto during a panel at Yale Law School on the topic of free speech.

A disgraced Democrat state senator dodged jail thanks to a plea deal over a $600,000 fraud which saw her spend federal cash on her wedding, honeymoon—and subsequent divorce. Katrina Robinson, 41, struck the plea deal Friday which saw her admit just two of the 20 counts she was facing, with a value of $3,400. Mainstream media outlets — including The Times — attacked or ignored The Post revelations, while the Biden administration falsely suggested it was part of a Russian disinformation campaign.
