Beto O’Rourke pivots to right in uphill
bid to unseat Texas Gov. Greg Abbott

Irving, Texas—Democratic candidate for governor Beto O’Rourke is looking for ways to close a persistent gap in the polls with Republican Gov. Greg Abbott, backing off his far-left stance on border security, gun ownership and other hot-button issues. The O’Rourke pivot is a glaring bid to turn out the party’s more moderate base and win over independent voters in the conservative state.(Snip)Polling shows Mr. O’Rourke consistently lagging behind Mr. Abbott, though only by single digits, leading some analysts to predict a close race. Since announcing his candidacy in November, Mr. O’Rourke has shifted his position on key issues, including gun rights, border security and school curricula.

Comments:

Maybe he's being advised by George Dubya Bush. Run to the right, but have every intention of governing to the left, including leaving the border wide-open and imposing deep control over schools (see No Child Left Behind).

I think everyone is underestimating the stupidity of the people on the left and the independents. And the every burgeoning ability of the left to rig elections. The right wing pundits keep crowing about the upcoming red wave. What has changed to make sure that the voting machines don't move thousands of ballots from one candidate or another as happened in Antrim county Michigan? Why shouldn't we expect the vote count to be stopped in large cites, the observers sent home followed by huge boxes of ballots appearing from under covered tables and through the loading dock from large out of state trucks and the vote continuing to change despite the count being stopped? What about the dead rising and the people voting who have not voted in years suddenly voting. And contrary to their previous party affiliations? Thousands of mail in ballots in stuffed boxes? Thousands of mail-in ballots from the "wrong" neighborhoods ending up in ditches and land fills? And the Republicans sitting and watching with stupid looks on their faces as a vote count massively in their favor suddenly swinging to their opponents by a few thousand votes? And Republican legislatures and attorney generals and governors imitating Sergeant Schultz and proclaiming "I see nutting", I hear nutting". Covering their eyes and crying "I see no evidence of vote fraud".

A federal judge has ruled that a former Kentucky clerk violated the constitutional rights of two same-sex couples who were among those to whom she wouldn't issue marriage licenses—a refusal that sparked international attention and briefly landed her in jail in 2015. US District Judge David Bunning in Ashland issued the ruling Friday in two longstanding lawsuits involving Kim Davis, the former clerk of Rowan County, and two same-sex couples who sued her.(Snip)Bunning reasoned that Davis 'cannot use her own constitutional rights as a shield to violate the constitutional rights of others while performing her duties as an elected official.'
