The Senate on Tuesday passed a bill to make daylight savings permanent from November 2023, and will now go to a vote in the House. The new legislation called The Sunshine Protection Act means that Americans will stop having to change their clocks twice a year in a ritual that was first adopted in 1918. The bill was led by Democratic Sheldon Whitehouse and his Republican colleague Marco Rubio, who has said the move could reduce crime, childhood obesity and stress.(Snip)The measure still needs approval from the House of Representatives and the backing of President Joe Biden. On Sunday, most of the United States resumed Daylight Savings Time,

I HATE DST! No way! Let the sun come up early and then get dark at a decent hour.

Purist here. Noon should be noon, not 1pm. Why can’t we have permanent standard time??

Gee, I'm glad all our problems are solved and the biggest problem is how we set our clocks.
While I like the extra hour in the spring, summer, and early fall, I do remember the problem that existed when we went year-round DST back in the 70s (as an energy saving measure). In the northern part of the US, many kids were waiting out in the darkness for school buses on country roads and tragic accidents were not uncommon.
We can live with the current system. Plus it gives computer programmers something to do a few minutes before lunch as they program all the electronic gizmos we can't live without and has the rest of us to change our "old school" clocks. Hey, once in awhile it's nice to act like the folks back on the range.

A stupid idea.
They tried it in 1974 and everyone hated it. It started in January 1974 and lasted until October.
Permanent daylight saving time makes already late winter sunrises one hour later.
The sun wouldn’t rise before 8 a.m.at my home in West Virginia for almost four months, between November and the end of February. The farther north you go the later it would rise.

There are parts of N Dakota that never adopted Day Light Savings. Interesting doing business there and one town 5 miles away is an hour behind…

Not to mention what this does to the UTC (Coordinated Universal Time)/GMT system and our circadian rhythm. What helps "city slickers" hurts farmers, and vice-versa.
I'm for ELIMINATION of Daylight Time (sorry Ben - perhaps good at your time, but problematic today). Let farmers, schools, employers, et al simply adjust their schedules as appropriate, and leave the clocks alone.

It depends on where you live as to how it impacts you. I live on the eastern edge of the central time zone, so DST is better for us. If you live on the western edge of a time zone, you would probably prefer Standard Time. I really don't care which one, we use. I just hate changing back and forth.

I also remember when we had year long daylight savings. It lasted one year. Too many children were killed by cars because it was still dark when they were walking to school. Of course, now more kids are bussed so maybe it won't be as bad.

A wise Native American chief, when told about the wonders of DST, said it was like cutting the bottom of a blanket off, sewing it too the top and claiming the blanket was now longer. So true. I hate DST. I was in High School when moron Carter dictated DST during the winter. Driving to school in the dark half asleep and the first few hours were killer to stay awake. Now the we have studied teen sleep, we have learned that they actually do require more sleep time. Some enlightened schools now open an hour later than in my day. Gee, DST year round, rampant inflation, rising gas prices and empty selves. Biden imitating Carter as both are doing the exact same thing. We are so screwed!

There are no adults in the room, just children who want to 'pretend' that all our time zones are one time zone further east. Why? Because we developed a concept of what a given hour means but it is more fun to play with the clock and make-believe it's something different Over time this will change our concept of what these new pretend times means and will have to pretend to add another hour on it to keep it fun. PS: The sun's high-noon moves are a half-hour earlier in Feb than it is in Nov, all on their own.

Whats that about doing the same wrong thing over and over? Hello Jimmah Carter, the 70s called and wanted to remind you of the universal hatred for year-round DST. I think it lasted 1 year until it was repealed. (PS Senate- how about something that helps us like forcing energy independence)

Just make regular time the regular time years round. Let businesses and schools adjust their times to what is appropriate in their own area.
Oh I forgot, the national government would be missing out on controlling one aspect of our lives.

The clocks need to be set so that when it is 12:00 noon, you walk outside and the sun is straight overhead (discounting latitude). As said elsewhere, let the businesses and schools adjust their schedules as they see fit. Time is an abstract but I'd like the traditional abstract.

I say Keep the present system.
It is a simple way to compensate for the longer Summer days and shorter Winter days, so that people who go to school or work regular 'Day Shift' jobs start their day reasonably close to when the sun comes up.
The 'Farmers' argument is silly- Farmers work when required by the crops and animals..... and Cows don't read the clocks.
I remember year-round DST, I was in high school. It was a Bad Idea. Little kids- early grade schoolers- were out waiting for the bus in the pre-dawn darkness- the coldest part of the 24-hour day on the coldest days of the year.
In the summer, setting the clocks ahead an hour lets everyone start their work day reasonably close to when the sun comes up, and gives school kids and working people an extra hour of DAYLIGHT to DO STUFF OUTSIDE before it gets dark.

How stupid. How long before they want to screw with permanent DST and have a new time?
In China the whole country is one time zone. Most people don’t have a watch. When do you go to work? When it gets light out. When do you go home? When it gets dark.

There is nothing I appreciate more - - nothing - - than the government creating an extra hour of daylight.
The only question I have is - - why doesn't the government declare 24 hours of daylight - - each and every day of every year? It would be so nice - - to never have to face the scary darkness of night again.
C'mon, government - - we demand round-the-clock daylight! Now!

The "longer day" is a misnomer. We can't change the length of the day any more than we can change what sex (or "gender") we are, or any more than we can change the earth's climate.
But having darkness when our work day starts makes it harder to wake up. And having light past bedtime makes that harder, too. We should have permanent standard time.

The time we use is just numbers, not the reality. DST doesn't alter time. It doesn't actually change the moment the sun rises or sets. DST alters the numbers identifying the same moment. Employers and commercial enterprises could simply start work at 10 rather than nine to the same effect in summer if important to the business. Maybe we should adopt the Aztec calendar...

Re #27. I lived near the arctic circle for a year and 24 hours daylight is no picnic. Messes with natural sleep cycles like crazy. I much preferred the flip side, where it was 24 hour night. Even that had its down sides; depression, alcoholism, etc.

The Emergency Daylight Saving Time Act signed by President Nixon dictated that clocks would spring forward one hour on Jan. 6 and stay that way for nearly 16 months, until April 27, 1975. This was done to conserve energy during the energy crisis of the early 1970s. Other measures put in place included odd-even gas rationing, a national speed limit (55 mph), and shortened Nascar races.

This is the only thing crazier than having DST in the first place. Now kids in the northern half of the country will have to go to school in the dark for months, which creates a safety hazard. Kids walking to school in the dark, crossing the street in the dark to get on the bus. It will cost lives of the most vulnerable among us. But no matter, the elite will have an extra hour to play golf after work.
