A member of Russia's parliament called for reparations from the United States on Sunday -- including the return of historic settlements in Alaska and California -- over the west's vast economic sanctions. The Kremlin has been flooding the airwaves of its state-run channels with pro-war propaganda that paints a vastly different portrait to reality and shields the Russian people from the horrors of Vladimir Putin's bloody invasion of Ukraine, the Daily Beast first reported.Alaska and Fort Ross in California were part of the Russian empire in the 18th and 19th centuries before they were sold to the United States.

Yeah.......before ya'll start making demands like this, you should win the war your in first. Only winners are in a position to make demands. The world's 2nd most powerful military taking on the 22nd ranked, ( ranked two below Canada) and you haven't wrapped that up. For comparison, the US destroyed the world's 4th ranked military in 4 days.

Guess they don't recall how they sold Alaska to the United States, in much the same manner France sold the section of America (Louisiana Purchase) - they couldn't defend the far-off lands, and needed money. Same with Mexico, after being defeated the United States gave back the land up-to the Rio Grande, paid for the portion Norte of the Rio Grande, and even paid reparations for areas within Mexico that were destroyed during the war. I'll have to look-up Fort Ross to see what that's all about.

Has the whole world gone mad? It certainly sounds like it. These demands are an embarrassment to Russia. Who talks like this? If nothing else, it sounds like pure desperation. During the whole time Biden was talking up this invasion if he and NATO had been arming Ukraine with the weapons it needed, this awful invasion may have been met with enough force to push Russia back on its heels. The Ukrainians are putting up one heck of a fight and it is a shame to watch them beg for weapons that could the difference between life and death. This could have been an opportunity to wound the Russian bear to such an extent that it would not be so eager to invade another country and it could have been done without boots on the ground from other countries. You can be sure that if Ukraine falls, Putin will march on the Baltic states.

Food prices are already skyrocketing. Some — a lot — of this comes from inflation caused by runaway government spending over the past two years. Some is from supply-chain issues. But a new problem is rearing its head, and government officials seem as likely to make it worse as to make it better. That problem is shortages of food and fertilizer brought about by the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the sanctions enacted by the West in response. Ukraine is a major wheat producer, but war is likely to ensure a poor spring planting and harvest. Russia is also a major grower, but sanctions and war will prevent it from exporting to most

One -- Reassuring an enemy what one will not do ensures that the enemy will do just that and more. Unpredictability and occasional enigmatic silence bolster deterrence. But President Joe Biden's predictable reassurance to Russian President Vladimir Putin that he will show restraint means Putin likely will not. Two -- No-fly zones don't work in a big-power, symmetrical standoff. In a cost-benefit analysis, they are not worth the risk of shooting down the planes of a nuclear power. They usually do little to stop planes outside of such zones shooting missiles into them. Sending long-range, high-altitude anti-aircraft batteries to Ukraine to deny Russian air superiority is a far better way
