A racist relic blocks affordable housing

California legislators — Democrats and Republicans — are in rare agreement: It’s time for the state to repeal a racist, classist provision in the state Constitution that makes it harder to build affordable housing. Article 34 was adopted in 1950 amid a discriminatory backlash against public housing. It requires that cities get voter approval before they build “low-rent housing” funded with public dollars. And yet, lawmakers have been hesitant to put the Article 34 repeal on the ballot. An attempt was dropped in 2020 and revived this year for the 2022 ballot, but it may be postponed until 2024. The

Comments:

The underlying issue is not skin color. Public housing = more traffic, noise, congestion, and yes - crime. The editorial rails against local, grass-roots control which is the foundation of democracy.

If Biden has his way, (and as Obama tried), public housing is coming to an address near you.

Sure, #3. And if "the squad" have THEIR way, public housing is heading to YOUR address. Authorities will decide which other people you will be obligated to share your residence. And resistance will be treated like rebellion.

Not much doubt that the original intent was racist but now OMG that communities would want some say in what happens to their city. Without a stop-gag the government can, and will, move homeless drug addicts, et al next door. Your rights will mean nothing

I think Kim Kardashian has lots of room around her. A gigantic house, big grounds. I'm sure there is room for a housing complex. Not sure where Bette Midler lives but she would probably want this type of housing around her, and Barbra Striesand, last I heard she has four houses in a row, each decorated in different styles, Surely she's willing to let three of them go to those homeless who need a place to live.

It's extremely racist to say that that law is racist. It's like saying people are low income because their race makes them that way. Yet that is how libtards really think. And lofos are led by the nose into following them.

Can anyone on the left argue anything without crying "racist?" When being able to dd up a column of numbers and get the right answer is "racist" I guess not. Being able to come into nice neighborhoods and plop a slum in the middle of it at the expense of the residents is a hard policy to justify. So just call opponents "Racist." How long are we going to put up with this canard?

They can’t trust people to vote the right way so they have to take it away. It’s a standard Democrat tactic to “save democracy” by “ending voting”. Simple.

A military drone that apparently flew all the way from the Ukrainian war zone over three European NATO-member states before crashing in an urban zone of the Croatian capital was armed with an explosive device, Croatia’s defense minister said Sunday. The Soviet-made aircraft crossed Romania and Hungary before entering Croatia, slamming into a field near a student dormitory late Thursday. About 40 parked cars were damaged in the large explosion, but no one was injured. "Traces of explosives and clues suggesting that this was not a reconnaissance aircraft were found. Saudi Arabia on Saturday executed 81 people convicted of crimes ranging from killings to belonging to militant groups — the largest known mass execution carried out in the kingdom in its modern history. The executions carried out surpassed even the toll of a January 1980 mass execution for the 63 militants convicted of seizing the Grand Mosque in Mecca in 1979, the worst-ever militant attack to target the kingdom and Islam's holiest site. It wasn't clear why the kingdom choose Saturday for the executions, though they came as much of the world's attention remained focused on Russia's war on Ukraine. The

Russia widened its military attacks in Ukraine on Friday, striking in some major western locations for the first time amid ongoing peace talks that have failed to produce any meaningful results. The new Russian airstrikes started just before dawn as Moscow's military rained bombs on some locations, Ukraine's Emergency Service said. Dnipro, in central Ukraine, also faced Russian rockets. "Dnipro is also under attack," Mykhailo Podoliak, an adviser in Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's office, said on Friday, according

WASHINGTON — Some social media users suggest that soaring fuel prices in the U.S. aren’t the result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, increased consumption or supply chain issues as daily life resumes after two years of stagnation brought on by the coronavirus pandemic.
