The COVID-19 pandemic is showing signs of soon coming to an end as the world marks two years since the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the virus a global pandemic. Some officials are saying that more vaccine shots may be needed in the future even after the world returns to 'normal'. Albert Bourla, CEO of Pfizer, told CNBC's Squawk Box Friday morning that his firm plans to ask the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) about the needs for a fourth COVID-19 vaccine dose soon. He cites data showing that vaccine protection wanes against Omicron after only three or four months.

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen warned that Americans should expect to continue paying increased prices on everyday goods for the next year, offering a reversal from her previous forecast that record-high inflation would soon subside. The main culprit, she told CNBC’s “Closing Bell” on Thursday, was Russia’s war against Ukraine.
Ms. Yellen‘s claim that Russian President Vladimir Putin is to blame for America’s inflation woes echoes that of the Biden administration writ large, which has received criticism for dubbing the phrase “Putin’s price hike.” “I think there’s a lot of uncertainty that is related to what’s going on with Russia in Ukraine,” Ms. Yellen said on the network.

The suspect busted in the hate-fueled hammer attack on an Asian man in a Manhattan train station is a known “transit offender” with nearly four dozen prior arrests, cops and police sources said Thursday. Christian Jeffers, 48, who identifies as a woman, was picked up shortly after 2 p.m. Wednesday—about 17 hours after she allegedly attacked the 29-year-old male victim at the 14th Street 1/2/3 station Tuesday, police said. Jeffers was charged with assault, aggravated harassment and menacing—all as hate crimes—and criminal possession of a weapon, authorities said. Her arraignment was pending Thursday. Prior to that bust, she was arrested 47 times,

The Southern Poverty Law Center found hate groups in every corner of America but the most were in California and Florida, according to the center’s new “Hate Map.” The SPLC maps the locations of what it calls “active hate and anti-government extremist groups” and managed to lump in the conservative-leaning American College of Pediatricians in Florida with various Ku Klux Klan and neo-Nazi organizations. The group said that last year, the hard-right movement “has worked feverishly to undermine democracy, with real-world consequences for the people and groups they target.” It also pointed to new election laws in Republican-run states and opposition to teaching critical race

The flu shot used during the 2021 to 2022 virus season was a poor match and did little to prevent circulation, a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report finds. Researchers found that the vaccine only reduced the number of mild influenza by 16 percent, which they do not consider statistically significant. The flu strain that struck America this year was of the H3N2 strain, one of the more dangerous versions of the virus, and the shot was not tailored to the specific version of the virus that ended up emerging. Experts had warned of a brutal flu season this year for months leading up to it,

Already under fire for racist behavior at school sporting events, New Prague students appeared to add more fuel to the blaze Wednesday, as a TV camera at the Minnesota high school hockey tournament in St. Paul caught students flashing what appeared to be a white power symbol. But the school district said the upper-elementary students flashing the "OK" hand signal had no idea it could be interpreted as a racist gesture.(Snip)Rob Young, a New Prague hockey parent, said the youngsters were playing the "circle game." In that game, a person makes the "OK" gesture, and if another person looks, they get a punch in the shoulder.

The mayor of Washington D.C. said that the killer in a carjack slaying earlier this week “probably” didn’t mean to murder his victim. Mayor Muriel Bowser, who has overseen a rising murder rate and a tripling of carjackings compared to before the pandemic, told a reporter on a video posted to social media on Thursday that “there is no more important issue for us right now than dealing with people who are committing crimes in our city.” She then cited the grisly slaying of Rakesh Patel, a 33-year-old ICU doctor, on Tuesday night. “We saw one person, who probably didn’t intend to kill anybody, but did,

There’s trouble at the most magical place on Earth. Some employees at The Walt Disney Company are slamming Disney leadership for what they see as an abysmal failure in supporting the LGBTQ community, adding that the entertainment giant has censored “nearly every moment of overtly gay same-sex affection” from some of its animated films.(Snip)In a letter addressed to Disney leadership, first obtained by Popular Information, the group said that they were “disappointed, hurt, afraid, and angry” with Disney for its financial involvement with Florida legislators behind the controversial legislation, which bans discussions about gender identity and sexual orientation in primary schools’ classrooms.

Despite desperate please from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and pressure from lawmakers at home, President Biden killed the Polish plan to transfer MiG-29 jets to Ukraine, fearing the deal might be viewed as an escalation of tensions by Vladimir Putin.
The diplomatic blunder that began with a top European Union diplomat promising the jets to Ukraine ended when Poland suggested it would give the jets to the U.S. to deliver to Ukraine, and the U.S. said that was Poland's responsibility. Then, U.S. defense officials killed the project entirely, saying they would not support either transferring the jets themselves or backing up Poland in doing so.

President Biden’s $1.5 trillion bipartisan government funding bill includes several lucrative perks for sitting members of Congress, including a 21% increase for office budgets within the House of Representatives. The funding bill, which the administration negotiated with congressional leaders from both parties, boosts the office budgets for House lawmakers by more than $134 million. The increase brings the total funding of House offices to more than $774 million—the highest since 1996. Top House Democrats, including Majority Leader Steny Hoyer of Maryland and Conference Chairman Hakeem Jeffries of New York, argue the boost is needed to ensure lawmakers can keep and attract prime talent for their staff.

Ukraine’s government operates over a dozen laboratories engaged in research on biological warfare defenses and other medical research that could fall into Russian hands, Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines told Congress on Thursday. Ms. Haines rejected Russian government claims that the facilities are making bioweapons, a theme that has circulated in conservative media as Moscow‘s invasion of its smaller neighbor entered its third week. “We do not assess that Ukraine is pursuing biological weapons, which have been basically the propaganda that Russia is putting out,” Ms. Haines said in testimony before the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence. The laboratories are working on biodefenses and public health response, she said.

President Joe Biden raised eyebrows after blaming soaring US inflation on Vladimir Putin, after the consumer price index hit another 40-year high of 7.9 percent in February. Although the inflation data released on Thursday does not capture the full impact of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which occurred just days before the end of February, Biden in a statement chose to blame 'Putin's price hike.' 'A large contributor to inflation this month was an increase in gas and energy prices as markets reacted to Putin's aggressive actions,' said Biden. 'As I have said from the start, there will be costs at home as we impose crippling sanctions
